Good point.

But I have made it clear (to myself at least) that ND has accepted a rebuilding, and it is my perception that it will take two more years. I don't like CW's offense at all, even after the first six games of his tenure, and I personally am not making excuses for the team.

They are young. That not an excuse. That is a fact.

It takes time to build depth.

I will certainly agree with you that we still do not have depth on the offensive and defensive lines. This is a huge problem as we all know. What is inexcusable is how some of the first string players have progressed. Sam Young is the perfect example. He was forced to play early because of lack of depth. Now, he is a junior and weighs 330lbs....but makes the same mistakes he did when he was a freshman. He hasn't learned the fundamentals necessary to succeed as a college offensive lineman. Again, it would be nice to have the depth that we all know is necessary to sustain an elite college program - but when the top players aren't being developed properly - it really doesn't matter how much depth you have.

Maybe a "chicken or the egg" question, and maybe simply a result of a bad offensive "system.". I can't say much with credibility because I don't have tivo and can't analyze the games, but quick watch shows me that O-line has absolutely NO footwork. They sometimes use their power, but failed chop blocks are fucking grotesque to watch.

I have to hang on to the thought that this team is young. It bears an uncanny resemblance to a football experience I lived through. Patience is good. So is pointing out the flaws. If nobody ever pointed out my flaws, I would never learn.

mooneytostle I can tell immediately that you are quality.

But we live in an age where it's not OK to be critical of someone's actions. We might hurt their feelings. I, for one, believe that you learn from your mistakes. If you don't know what mistakes you're making you don't know what to fix.

I agree with the "don't flinch" mentality and I believe that you can't let your opponent "see you sweat." But.......

I don't need to see another thread questioning our loyalties. With the exception of trolls, we're here because we love the Irish. Can we just give this shit a rest?

I think most of you are missing the meaning of "Not Flinching". It is most critical for the players to never see their head coach flinch, especially late in the 4th in a tight game. Players receive their confidence from the HEAD COACH, something Coach Holtz Mastered.

Hehe, I been there (Portage) . It was in the winter and looked like something a Jack London novel describes. Lots of snow. I also had a friend from Gary. She said that it was a terribly depressed area.

Yes, apparently I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't think you were talking about a physical response. You are confusing the hell out of me. This thread started out about fans and has now shifted to player confidence. So does this team have confidence or not? If they do, why did they lose 6 games (4 or 5 to inferior talent)? If they do not, is it the head coach's fault as you suggest? So, now we're back to us fickle fans....criticizing the staff for unacceptable progress.

What are you talking about? Really I wonder about your mental stability, think about what you just said about our young players not progressing. We won 3 games last year and were uncompetitive in 8. We won 6 games this year and competed in all but 2 and I only include the BC game because we had zero offense, but the D kept us in it for 3 quarters. I mean really did you think that Charlie was going to pull a rabbit out of his ass and suddenly we were going to win 9 games. It does take time to build a program and as you so galently stated we have been bad for 15 years. Look Charlie came in here with some guys he could win now with and went for the Home Run we came up short and then he looked around and relized the rest of Willinghams recuits were scrubs. He did what any coach would do he recruited great talent and put them on the field. They struggled and progressed and now they are headed for a bowl game. It may be the Hawaii Bowl but look at every program in D 1 football program they have all been to a shitty bowl at some point. I think you need to check yourself and see who you really want to root for. This is not the New York Yankees where we can go buy guys instead of developing them.

It does take time and I will promise you one thing Charlie will right the ship and when he does I will shove all these negative messages about this program up your ass. I wish you would would either be a fan or shut the hell up. We are on here to discuss issues not degrade our team. I for one can see alot of improvement and beleave strongly in this team and our head coach. One more thing before you quote me and use your favorite word (naive) to describe my view on the team, I challenge you to do something. Find me one team, or coach that started over half underclassmen and played a competative scedule and was able to win 6 games. Find me that if you can..

365 days a year...used to be the murder capitol, but now they just make the top 10 every year.

I must say that there are some really great points on both sides of the arguement. Kevin, being a player, maybe you can explain the extreme lack of heart that this team has. It was even stated by one of the top performers on this team publicly. I have never, in all my years as an Irish fan seen such a lack of excitement from a Notre Dame team. I believe that Lou would have put his foot up your ass. This is the main reason for my anger when it comes to this team.
