i don't know why Bolt doesn't run the 400 and possibly the 800. he could also do well in the 4x400 relay.

swimming is probably the only event where someone could win as many medals as Phelps did. in track they don't have the 100, the 100 backwards, the 100 on your hands, the 100 hop-skip-jump, the 100 relay.

why they need so many nearly identical events in swimming is a mystery to me.

I agree he is the best ever, especially because he could have had a better time had he not slowed down in the end. However, he only won one gold medal this olympics and one world record. On the other hand, we have Michael Phelps, eight gold medals and 7 world records. What Usain Bolt did was great and what Phelps did was amazing. To put it in track terms: Bolt annihilated in the 100 meter dash, Phelps went out there and whooped the pants off everybody in a marathon.

I think Bolt has a couple more races to go.

Yeah, probably the 4x100, maybe the 200 and 4x200.

as for running the 400 and 800, completely different. I ran 400s and 800s in high school and there was no way i could keep up with a sprinter in a 100 or 200 and they wouldnt have been able to keep up with a middle distance runner. The muscle fibers needed for the two are different, sprinters needing fast twitch fibers while longer than that need slow twitch. It would be interesting to see what his time would be in both of those events though.

You are exactly right, the 400 and 800 are much different then the 100 and 200. Good call.

well, not really, the comparison i mean. in swimming there is the 1500m, which is the longest distance swim i believe. and phelps doesn't race in it. the longest phelps races is 200m i believe.

he dominates in the shorter distances and pretty much focuses on freestyle and butterfly strokes. i don't know if there is a comparison to other events, because none of them have as many similar races that a single racer could compete in.

The weird thing about Bolt is that he is 6-5, and to me, doesn't look like a sprinter who would be on steroids.

It was metaphorically speaking, but, Bolt does compete in 4 events at most (still unsure on that one) and phelps competes in twice that much. Thats where i was going with it.

i hope he's not. i'm tired of cheaters. we've had enough in us sports for a while now.

but being big an bulky isn't a sign of steroid or PEDs anymore, since the newer forms of PEDs help with muscle recovery, oxygen retention, etc.

I think he's in 3 events. 100m, 200m, and 4x100 relay. There is no 4x200 in the Olympics.

I can't navigate nbc's olympic website well enough to figure out how many races he's running in.

bolt is truly something else. he basically jogged the last ten meters and still broke the world record.

That's the difference with swimmers, I think- Phelps also does a 400 m race. Not every swimmer does this many events as it is a grueling schedule. And one other thing that sets him apart- he is a nice guy:
Afterward, Phelps gathered his three mates in a group huddle, then hugged each one of them separately. He thanked them for their role in the last of his three relay wins. They congratulated him for his remarkable feat.

“It was cool,” backstroker Aaron Peirsol said. “We got to be a part of it.”

Another member of the relay team, breaststroker Brendan Hansen, was most impressed by the way Phelps detached himself from all the hype once he got away from the pool. He’d set a world record in the morning, then go back to the village and act like nothing had happened.

“I’d be like, ‘Do you realize what you’re doing?’” Hansen said. “And he’d be like, ‘Man, the pizza is good today.’”

But deep down, Phelps was soaking it all in—the glory and the minutiae. He had all the medals hanging in his room. By the end of the games, Hansen quipped, they resembled a wind chime.

As much as he relished the actual races, what he really seemed to treasure most were those behind-the-scenes moments. Unlike Spitz, who was viewed as aloof and even arrogant by his fellow swimmers, Phelps got along with all his teammates, even though they all knew he was in a league of his own.

He hung out with them during his down time in the athletes’ village, playing cards and the world-conquering game Risk. He made a point to engage the Olympic rookies he didn’t know very well. He did what lots of other 23-year-olds did— play hip-hop music and text his buddies.

The 800 meters is a much different race then the 100 or 200.

The guy won a single race and your already wanting to know if he's the best ever? Yeah he won by a big margin and could have even done a little better but I don't think he is hardly sitting at Micheal Phelps table yet nor do I believe he ever will.

No, not in the league of Michael Phelps but he should win 200 gold and a relay or two. Bolt is a special talent.

Oh yea, the guy is fast there's no doubt about it. I looks like that entire Jamaican team is fast. The women swept the 100M last night.

Last nights 200 victory was amazing and I think he has 1 or 2 more events.
