I just saw a feature segment about ND on ESPN. And a little snippet of an interview with Clausen was included. And it was all "I", "Me", "I", "Me". I mean not one iota of "team" in his mindset. Jeez, if he played for any other team, I'd hope he'd get his clock cleaned because he's such a self-absorbed d***.

I'm really disappointed. ND is going to get crushed with egos like that on the team.

That's quite a bold statement to make after a "snippet" of film on ESPN.

On-campus, Clausen has been known to be a rather quiet individual. On the field, he seems to play the role of a quiet leader. In more familiar settings is when he most opens up and relaxes a bit. Should he handle himself more appropriately on and off camera ? Undoubtedly. But let's not making overstretched assumptions based on a limited and, ultimately, an edited view of the kid.

yeah. and that snippet was probably when they asked him about the whole beer olympics thing. i don't know how he would have spun the team into that.

He was one of the few that always seemed to show heart and fire last season. He'd get up after some of the many sacks, and jaw at the opponents. All the while, the OL would still be on their backs. I don't know about 4 heismans (3 now?), but I think he will have the leadership qualities. I expect a good year, with a breakout next season.

snippets of film suggest massive editing... ESPN could make the Pope look bad if they wanted too.

Jimmy will be just fine there is no doubt in my mind. Soon, he and the rest of the team will make last year a distant memory.

First, let me say that I am totally disgusted with the ESPN coverage of the story and vow to never take them seriously again. Their reporters need to retake Journalism 101 again. Secondly, I overreacted to the story and was critical of Jimmy and regret having done so. But, hopefully, he has learned that he is always in the spotlight and must conduct himself accordingly....and perhaps tone down the ego a bit!

personally I am glad he did not bring the team into this... this was his screw up and I think words like, I and me show he is taking ownership of his mistake

The asked him about himself, so he answered best he could. He is also instructed not to say a whole lot that would give a lot away. They asked about the incident and he said me and my teammates are moving forward. Sounds egotistical to me.

First thing, I should not have referred to Clausen as a potential "schmuck". Bad choice of words. So I apologize for that.

Now what got me about the interview was that he was not I'ing and Me'ing in taking ownership of mistakes. He pretty much stated that he and Charlie Weiss were essentially brought in to save the program by demonstrating their greatness in South Bend. And that just rubbed me the wrong way.

You can say this about most talented people on this planet, "He may be good, but he ain't that good." And right now, that's Jimmy until he proves otherwise. He should be counseled to scale his ego to his productivity.

P.S. I don't think BQ ever defined himself that way, even after he matured into the fine QB he was as a senior.

Jimmy will be fine. People are blowing this beer thing way out of proportion. And when you listen to most QB give interviews they say I and me. They put alot of pressure on themselves to help win games. If you look outside of the ND family how many folks talk about the poor OL play last season, not many. Most talk about how Jimmy is over rated and blah blah blah. I think he will have a great season.

No one acknowledges anything that was out of his control last year. The funny thing is they call him overrated but not any other guys who he posted similar or better stats then (Stafford, Mallett, ETC.). If the OL improves as much as I think they have then Jimmy is going to have a special season.

and that wasnt meant in a sense that clausen wont be either, just some hope for crist more than others, thats all

Isn't a little ego a good thing? If Jimmy's persona is closer to the HOF limo incident, isn't that more consistent with the 'nasty' persona we want our team to have? Don't get me wrong, Brady is an all-time great, my favorite ND quarterback, and in all likelihood the namesake of one of my unborn children.

But Brady's persona is not one that he will step on your head while you are down as he is running to celebrate a touchdown pass with his teammates. I want Jimmy to be Anthony Michael Hall in 'Johnny Be Good.' Cocky, arrogant, and dominant. Talk smack as ND gets back to national prominence. Once we are there, we can hand it off to Dayne, who seems early on to be a bit more in the Brady mold.

If you don't agree, at least give me some props for the AMH reference.

I find it funny how every time any athlete is interviewed, they seemingly speak from a template littered with cliche, after cliche. As soon as they teeter from the template, "fans" jump down their throats.

I don't think we know nearly enough about either BQ, or JC to speak confidently about who they are--as people--away from football. I think its egregious to encapsulate Clausen's character based on a few video clips/soundbites.
