ISD power hour.

Cooper Flannigans hammy is probably worse than expected and they don’t think he’ll play against Navy or Miami. Yay.

I still remember that awful game vs Nebraska and coming in to the stadium and being shocked at all the Nebraska fans...they were nice folks though but still shocking to see over half of the stadium being Huskers...i dont think I have ever seen that before...
Georgia likely had more...I was there for that one.

Didn’t he get hurt the Thursday before BYU? I’m surprised he’s going to miss that amount of time for a hammy during a typically light Thursday practice.

We'll be fine. I'm not worried about Navy at all. I'd rather Denbrock say fuck it, put Premer in and start chunking it to him. Keep Miami honest. Make them cover him in space while mixing it runs with Walton and James. We need to be more dynamic.

On the way to work this morning, I listened to Driskell's podcast from yesterday discussing the offense as a whole. A lot of attention on WR rotation, skill sets, what CJ is doing pre snap and how it's impacting him and his struggles post snap, RBs, TEs, not getting playmakers on the field due to all the checks, etc etc. I don't always agree with Bryan, but it's a good perspective to listen to occasionally.

I was 100% aligned with everything he was saying about our offense, especially that it seems its top priorities are not to turn it over, then to make sure you check into plays that won't be negative, then to focus on scoring points. It's why this offense is not explosive at all.

I have a hard time believing we're going to make the changes needed to have a great offense this year with so much time invested in the crap we're doing. I struggle with how the staff thought that their plan for the offense this year was a good one. Just maddening.

I'm sure we'll have some adjustments for Miami, we'll see how significant they are. Going into that, our offense must have the mindset they need to score 40. The game may dictate that's not the case, but you have to go in thinking and preparing for it.

I just don't think the offense has enough pieces. They completely whiffed at WR in the portal and IMO they needed 1-2 solid, proven WR instead of gambling on Graham and Porter. I personally don't think Gilbert or Greathouse can be the #2 on a team that wins the title. I also don't think they have a single Tight End that scares opposing Defenses. They probably should've grabbed one in the portal.

I mean they probably assumed they had a top 3 defense, so if they didn’t make mistakes they could beat pretty much beat anyone considering their QB. This was like IU’s exact recipe last year.

Great points NDMatt...completely botched the WR transfer...I will be honest, I saw the OSU and I was like wow!...big whiff...I also think the lack of WR rotation is a big thing and the lack of TE play has been concerning.

That and it's also MF's general philosophy inherited from Jim Tressel.

How good has Burress looked? I'm not saying he's the best WR on the team, but physically, he's looked the most gifted and as the best playmaker.

Graham IMO has looked very good when running non slot fades, he was open a lot early in the year and CJ just didn't throw it to him.

Premer - yes he's young, but he's different. Every time he's in he gets wide open running routes.

Coaches aren't focused at all IMO on getting the best players on the field, they're focused on getting the players that know all the checks the best on the field.

Walton - add him to the mix. He'd be a 15-20 carry player on 90% of power 4 teams from game 1.

With regards to explosiveness - it is this. They need the players, or different players, to be more explosive within the offense, not this fantasy idea of changing an offense Week 8

If Carr doesn’t get sacked and doesn’t throw an INT and we get to the red zone 5 times against Miami - how many points do you expect to score?

They fucked up the spike. They ran out of time. They kicked FGs. That is the bigger issue than the 300+ yards of offense

I’ll tap the sign again - there is nothing wrong with being #1 in SD Success Rate and #1 in Havoc Allowed if you score in the red zone

The design of the offense got you to the red zone 5 times against a Top 20 defense at worst, it’s what happened next
Their standard offense did NOT get them into the red zone 5 times.

2 of the times they got into the red zone it was during 2 minute, clearly running a much more hurry up offense.

1 other time they got the ball at the BYU 40 and got two first downs (FG)

1 other time they got the ball at the BYU 24 and did nothing (FG)

ND got the ball 6 times on the ND side of the field and got into the RZ twice (non 2 minute)

In 2 minute, we got into the red zone twice

Then a turnover and failed fake punt got us the ball right outside the BYU red zone and we did nothing.

Our offense had success running their "base" offense on 2 of 8 possessions and had success in both 2 minute drills.

The base offense isn't good, and why it's also not good in the red zone. It's much harder to complete dink and dunk crap when the D has less field to defend.

It's also really hard to run an offense always checking, giving tells the defense, and pretty much letting the defense know what you're doing.

That isn’t what standard down success rate means. It’s referring not being in 2nd and 3rd and long.

Not enough points to win. Most likely under 30. IF we get to the red zone only 5 times we better hope we also have 2 other TDs via big plays, D, or STs.

Agree that the spike, time, kicking fgs vs tds is the easiest to fix. But again, IMO, the overall offense is the much bigger issue. There's systemic issues with it.

ND only had 250yds total offense vs BYU outside of both 2 minute drills over 9 possessions. That's less than 30 yds a possession. Thats well below average for a D1 offense.

ND had a better explosive play rate than BYU. BYU won by having down to down success, avoiding negative plays and going 4/4 in the red zone.

There were basically 9 red zone attempts in the game and we lost 7 of them. That was the reason we lost. People can write fan fiction about drawing up more jet sweeps but I think you’re just wasting you’re time and missing the real issue.

Then it was likely Chris Ash not Denbrock at fault, like the A&M game
I put more fault of the BYU game on Ash/Freeman than Denbrock/Freeman because we should have easily held them 20 or under. But there's a lot of blame to go around.

Now, if ND holds Miami under 30 points, that's a win for the D, not scoring over 30 points would be a Denbrock/Freeman bigger issue.

About the only realistic scenario where we hold them under 30 and lose and it's the defenses fault is if we're up 27 - 14 with 5 minutes to go and lose 28-27. Something like that where the D absolutely collapses at the end (common under ash in big games).

UCF held BYU to less yards and RZ possessions than ND, they also had more yards vs BYU than ND. UCF lost the week before by 14 to OKst. UCF isn't a bad team, but not comparable to ND talent and experience wise.

If CJ doesn't miss 2 wide open receivers for touchdowns and bungle the spike, ND beats BYU and covers the spread. Shouldn't have lost, but 3 plays were genuinely the difference between a loss and a double digit win. Things are not as bad as people are freaking out about.
Can also say if BYU doesn't become moronic and go for the fake punt and fumble a fair catch this isn't even close at the end and BYU wins by more than 10. The final score was appropriate for how the game was coached and played for 60 minutes.

We can focus on red zone only, and yes that tells part of the story, the main scoring part no doubt. But there's a lot that led to how BYU was able to get into the red zone so easily, and why ND struggled to get there outside of byu unforced mistakes.

I don't think the team is bad by any means, but I think the coaching issues are actually worse than people are freaking out about. This is exactly how we lost 2 games last year and missed the playoff with one of the best teams in the country, coaching. That can happen again. 2 years in a row where we only play 1-2 really good opponents, and overall easy schedule.
