We are light on LB numbers, several could leave after this year, and last year's class didn't exactly light the world on fire. The plan should be to just take 3.
Comes down to money. If you can get 5-6 stud DL in this class, but it's at the cost of a 3rd LB, most people would jump all over that idea. If ND can make it work financially, they'll probably take 3, but none of the guys they're pursuing are going to come on the super cheap. Their base defense is also nickel, therefore, they play the overwhelming number of their snaps against non-triple option teams in two linebacker sets.
Among the the top LB's in 2026, you likely get 1 of them back in 2027 (Ausberry). KVA's decision will likely depend on his health and production coming off the ACL. Faraimo will return and be looking to be an impact starter. The staff is high on Ko'o Kia, who has plenty of eligibility. Teddy Rezac is also going to get a long look on special teams this year as well and is apparently very smart and thought to be a year away from contributing on the defense. Thomas Davis Jr is going to be a player down the road. Already standing out as a freshman who is simply buried right now. We'll have to see what Ja'Kobe Clapper brings to the table when healthy.
With 6-7 LBs likely to return next year, landing two is probably the baseline this year and the staff probably takes a 3rd if it's the right guy and the money is in the budget.
