Keeley is really replacing 2025 Young, a backup, who wasn’t very good.

Young probably takes a bit step forward and likely better than #40 Burnham. I believe Kelley will be a step up from 2025 Young’s snaps. And he doesn’t need to be a pass rushing monster, we need a strong end not another Boob/Durham.

James gets all the hype from the staff, but he hasn't made much happen yet in televised carries. Williams is going to have a big year.
100% agree, breakout year from Williams. Kudos to him for understanding his role last season with Love & Price and for patiently waiting his turn.

I’m shocked Sanders came here to be a backup for a year. He’s everywhere

He's going to play a ton. While Zackery will be listed as the #2 CB on one side of the field, my guess is that Sanders will functionally be the #3 CB and the first guy in at either Boundary or Field and that they'll rotate him Mckinney and Moore regularly, before he assumes a starting position in 2027 when both leave. He'll likely also play on every special team.

Let's also be very honest in that there is a high likelihood that we face injuries in the secondary throughout the year. Doesn't necessarily mean season ending injuries, but I'll be shocked if Sanders doesn't start at least a couple games this year.

When you're planning to play deep into the playoffs, you need quality depth.

Exactly and I think the second secondary is deep enough where you can give your starters a day off if they are banged up

The one at the end where everyone was crowding him and screaming in his face and his teammates had to pull dudes off him before he kicked it?

OK

I'll take it
I will as well...yes, they weren't trying to block it but there was pressure. All eyes were on him and he had one shot to drill it and he did. I'd say anything 50 and in you can think about at least giving it a try. After last year where I had 0 confidence in even a PAT, I will take it.

Don't read if you're anti-nerd - Carr series, not every play, after rewatch IMHO:

1st Series
- 3rd and 2 - Wham. Otting really walls of T. Gray and Flanagan stones LB. 1st Down.
- 3rd and 5. Another solid pocket. Seemed like a bad throw by CJ on a curl which should be inside, not outside to Gilbert.

2nd Series
- 2nd and 6 - Brewu stones and sheds Absher for no gain
- 3rd and 5 - another solid pocket, curl to Gilbert again. On target but Sanders is sticky - PBU.
- 3rd and 9 backed into endzone - Someone beats Augustine, throw has to come out quick, Sanders all over Williams makes it a throwaway.

3rd Series
- 1 and 10 - Shuler knows the play too well pre-snap and blows up toss before it even happens. Tae does the same on drive later.
- 1 and 10 - Another wham. Flanagan helps Knapp on T. Gray enough. Sneed is too slow to diagnose giving ample time for Flanagan to get both. 7 yard gain.
- 2 and 3. Sneed nice zone drop covers Gilbert and then tackles check down to RB for nothing.
- 4 and 2 - Finally go to Faison. Thud but probably makes Zackery miss tackle for first down and more.
- 1 and 10 - IZ and C. Gray is coming on a blitz. They call it dead for 4. Not sure he makes that tackle on Williams cut back, ton of space if missed.
- 2 and 6 - Brewu again destroys Absher. Give them 4.
- 3 and 2 - Williams hits hole quickly. Otting and Knapp big whole v T. Gray and Young

4th Series
- 1 and 10 - Ref called hold on Augustine vs Thomas. Debatable. Beat him, lunged, but didn’t seem egregious and Carr checked it down in time before sack
- 3 and 20 - laser on the hands to Washington between the zone. INT off his hands by Sneed

Some non-obvious from first watch takeaways: Absher was not good in the run game, Knapp was good all day, pass protection as a whole was pretty good though obviously not too exotic. T. Gray plays a bit too tall.
Some of Jamie’s tweets:

2nd and 5 - Deep ball to Gilbert broken up by Sanders. Nice late hands. Really clean pocket - Black stones Keeley, Otting/Knapp pass of Hughes/Brewu stunt. C. Gray in stride with Graham on Cross.

2 and 10 - Mukam easily gets off Absher. No gain.

1 and 20 - now Thomas beats him clean for sack

2 and 30 - Dunham whips Black. Graham gets loose against Sanders in zone and YAC. Sanders does not look like a nickel

I think everyone has forgotten a bull named Kedron Young. He will be our short yardage bull at a minimum. Guy is around 235 and runs harder than anyone we’ve had for a while. Just hasn’t had the opportunity but he should get it this year. We will use 2-3 backs this year. If one of them fumbles more than once someone else will start getting reps. Williams is going to be good though. I definitely see him getting over a 1000 yards and when we make the playoffs he will exceed Loves totals.

It's the spring game, but seeing Dunham's nose for the football and the sheer size of Tionne Gray has me extremely excited for this defensive line. I expected Dunham to just be a situational passrusher this year, but you can tell he's going to be a hit and will be ready to contribute in the 2 deep. The depth on the DL is just unlike anything we've seen at ND in years.
T Gray is a massive human being in person. Something ND isn’t used to having in the middle since the days of the late Louis Nix.

In Brad Powers I Trust.

Brad has been particularly critical of Notre Dame the last couple years. He seems much more positive now.

I agree with him in taking U11.5 wins, and not necessarily because I think they will drop a game. There’s essentially zero juice in taking the over, and there’s zero margin for error.

Yea, that’s cool. Go Irish. Brad Powers is a joker and I genuinely thought it was a bot account. I should have used italics I guess.

Got to give it up to Kelly who let chocolate thunder play QB on the two point conversion in the BG game. Best version of Kelly.

Notre Dame spring game and general thoughts:

-Beautiful day, near-record crowd.

-CJ Carr had an off day. 3-4 passes were way off the mark, the other incompletions were great plays by the DB's. Wouldn't overthink this. Those in attendance during last week's scrimmage said it was one of the best practices by a ND QB in years. I think Carr deserves to be among the Heisman favorites but I'd like to see more consistency.

-Obviously, there's going to be a drop-off at RB without Love/Price. How big of a drop-off is the question? I happen to think Aneyas Williams and Nolan James will still be very productive, just less explosive.

-WR position will be much more dynamic. Jordan Faison will have his best season yet. Ohio State transfer Mylan Graham has had a great spring. The kid with the most long-term upside (2027 and beyond) is probably true freshman Devin Fitzgerald (Larry's son) who flashed again yesterday. Can't wait to see Ohio State transfer Quincy Porter and 5-star TE Ian Premer in the fall.

-OL was missing a couple of starters including a late scratch in RT Guerby Lambert. I like that they have kicked Anthonie Knapp inside to LG. If they stay healthy (big if), this should be an improved unit.

-DL is the story of the spring and I thought won the day yesterday. They're bigger, deeper and more talented than any ND DL in recent memory. Keep an eye on 5-star true freshman Rodney Dunham, the highest-rated ND recruit regardless of position in 13 years. I expect DE Boubacar Traore to play like an All-American and Bryce Young will have his best season. Transfers Tionne Gray and Francis Brewu will start at DT but Armel Mukam is going to get some snaps and impressed yesterday (so did Sean Sevillano and Davion Dixon).

-Starting LB's Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa and Drayk Bowen were out but they still had Jaiden Ausberry and Jaylen Sneed who have multiple years of starting experience. It's as talented and experienced as any ND LB unit in recent memory and I really like Madden Faraimo as the next great LB.

-Going to sound like a broken record but the DB's are loaded. Leonard Moore is by far the best CB in the country but did not play yesterday.

-Adon Shuler and Tae Johnson might be the best safety combo in the country (are you tired of the optimism yet?). Keep an eye on backup safety Ethan Long who had a great day. Also Michigan transfer Jayden Sanders is going to play a lot. Had a great game in place of Moore. Sanders is a kid who played 300 snaps for the Wolverines last year and graded out well. Underrated pickup for the Irish.

-FG kicking game has been a major weakness the last couple of years. Purdue transfer Spencer Porath has had a great spring.

-Finally, I think new DL coach Charlie Partridge is a big upgrade over Al Washington.

-Projection: 11-1 (I did bet UNDER 11.5). They'll be favored in every game and possibly 10 games by double-digits (at BYU and Miami being the exceptions). Freeman's teams have had a hiccup every season so far. I've said it the last two years and will say it again, this is the most talented and deepest ND team since the early 1990's. They deserve to be title favorites this year...however, the "Chicken Little" in me from the last three decades is just waiting for the bad news to drop.

CJ didn’t even throw the ball enough to say he had a “bad day”. He had a couple bad throws on the first 2 drives, a few that could have been caught too. Looked better on the third.

Overall the number of “meaningful” snaps was likely down substantially from previous spring games with this format.

I don't know if it's just me. Or do we seem to come out flat pretty often? I really don't want to see a 24-14 game against Wisconsin. We should be blowing teams out until October.

The running backs have to get up every day and constantly hear they won't be as good as Love & Price. Just add another chip to the shoulders already carrying a chip.
No one talking about Kedron Young. Guy should have a boulder on his shoulder. Don’t think we have anyone nearly his size or strength or who runs as hard. He will be our surprise back.

We were likely out 3 starters on offense Saturday, Ashton Craig, Charles J, and Quincey Porter. Can even make a late season argument for Ian Premier, but regardless, down a lot of the offense.

Hoping Quincey Portal can quickly acclimate and grab the bull by the horns. We only see a fraction, but I just don't see Micah Gilbert doing anything to win the job other than by default.

Quincy Portal? Dude, he just got here and you’ve got him leaving? That’s rough.
