No I will not go to bed when IRISH fans try to degrade other IRISH fans. Why do we fight amongst each other?
You’re the one that kicked things off with what “a true old school fan” believes. Then you got all huffy when people didn’t go along with your purity test.

Boo me or not, it doesn't feel the same when you buy a championship.
First of all, also a life long Cubs fan, winning the World Series was amazing and what does “bought” even mean in this context…that team had the fifth highest payroll in the MLB that year. It wasn’t some Dodgersesque super team. It was certainly better than watching the Yankees or Red Sox win another series.

Second, and perhaps relatedly, what are teams supposed to do when faced with these sorts of situations? ND isn’t going to land and retain competitive talent without opening the checkbook. Is it really all that different if we’re offering guys in high school life changing money or guys in their second year of college?

Finally, we should be clear-money has always been the lifeblood of the ND football program. Holtz wasn’t successful in the 80s and 90s because he was a brilliant tactical mind, he was successful because ND had a national TV deal in an era where most teams didn’t, giving it the exposure and financial muscle needed to stock its roster with a depth of talent that would make Saban’s proto NIL teams jealous.

All I am seeing is this - there is s fork in the road for teams like TT or Tenn playing the portal lottery.
RH lane is the Cig/IU path.
The LH path leads to Jimbo Fisher.
The middle path is Day, pay for a championship but lose huge chunks soon after because the cost of that team was always unsustainable.

A lot of teams are trying to copy Cig's style. Remains to be seen if they can eval & coach talent like he does.
Other wise the school pays a lot for a team, underperforms and is saddled with the cost of firing coaches.

I prefer the ND path of recruiting and developing 95% and some transfers, and I hope failure on all the wannabe NY Yankees trying to buy teams every year.
