Signed today though. Giants job is brand new. No idea if it happens but I won't not be worried until the coaching carousel is over.
The NYG GM, right now, is probably on the hot seat big time. If he dips into the college ranks for the next head coach, that's an incredibly bold move. Further, GM Joe Schoen was Assistant GM of the Bills where Daboll was OC. He worked for the Dolphins for years prior to that. Schoen has NFL connections. He's got to get this right and hiring Marcus Freeman is a huge gamble for him. I don't see it happening. They need an offensive guy to start building around Dart, because Schoen is now on his second QB pick after Daniel Jones didn't work out for him either.

So he's on first round drafted QB number two and is going for head coaching hire number two. Lots of heat.

Coach Free also has like fifteen other kids. Moving the entire family closer to where your oldest is going to college is classic Boomer garbage. Coach Free is going to let that boy go off and be.

Feels like a Joe Brady landing spot.

Maybe. I think they'd be taking a shot there. Might as well promote Kafka at that point.

McCarthy has 18 years as an NFL head coach. Four losing seasons, one Super Bowl. He can probably provide some stability.

It's Joe Schoen's ass.

Rather not hijack this thread, but I honestly think it comes down to Mike McCarthy or Klint Kubiak.

I think Coach Free is a very good coach, but I really get the impression he's happy at Notre Dame. I'm just going off of the two times he was a guest on The Pivot. He explains it to a point that if it isn't genuine, he's got Daniel Day Lewis acting chops. I know things can change and some NFL team could make a crazy offer, but when you look at the Giants and their current GM, I think they may TALK to Coach Free but I don't know that they'd be bold enough to hire him.

They are probably going to go for an experienced guy or an offensive minded guy.
Yeah, I'm not sure if he wants the League or not, but if he does no college gig (even one as great as ND) will hold him, but the current Giants are not in a good spot at all. They have some talent but their GM as you mentioned is on the hot seat and while I'm a Jaxon Dart fan, he is not going to last long with the way he runs around and takes shots. It's one thing for an NFL retread or an OC/DC who wants his shot to take the job, but it's another thing for a coach like Freeman who is one special season away from all time icon/legend status and is in a great spot to leave that for a mess like the Giants.

If Andy Reid decided to retire and the Chiefs wanted Freeman I could see where that would be different, but I don't think that is going to happen any time soon.

The Giants desperately need stability and Mike McMarthy will certainly provide that. He's not a "sexy" hire, but he would be a great hire for them.

Freeman is paid twice as much as Daboll was reportedly making, has stability and alignment and probably more control than he’d have in most NFL jobs. And if he wins a natty for Notre Dame he’s a legend forever.

Aside maybe from not having to deal with recruiting and NIL nonsense, what exactly would be the appeal here?

Answering your question earnestly: he's a football guy, and the NFL is the top of the football mountain. There can be no doubt that on some level he wants to answer for himself the question of where he stands as a coach on that mountain, and without trying he'll never know. There are other factors as you note, and maybe for him those factors outweigh the desire to coach a Super Bowl winner. I hope that's the case for a few years more, but I doubt it'll keep him here for much longer than that.

Giant GM is a local Elkhart guy. I believe he went to Elkhart Memorial high school.A local boy would never swipe Marcus Freeman from Notre Dame.

If you had to rank Freeman’s skills/traits, what number do you have to get down to in order to name a trait that is transferrable to the NFL?

I think so too. Probably buys Schoen some time, too, for his own job.

I don't think recruiting and NIL are really a nuisance for him. They're really doing well with both in this current environment.

I think Freeman would look for stability and strong infrastructure. Chiefs are a good example. Let's say the Steelers and Tomlin part ways or the Ravens cut John Harbaugh loose. He'd want something like that if they were interested. I just don't see him as a fit at any NFL franchise, though. Not yet.

Those are the three longest tenured NFL head coaches. After those three, 2017 is the earliest any NFL head coach was hired (McDermott, McVay, Shanahan). These jobs gobble people up and spit them back out. He's building equity with Notre Dame and really doing well with it. Just feels like it isn't time yet. He has more to do before he's actually earned an NFL opportunity. I think a guy like Brian Flores should get a second shot. Vance Joseph, Antonio Pierce, etc. Plenty of guys have put in their time and should get an opportunity.

I'm biased as an ND fan, but I feel like Coach Free has a lot more left to do here. I know last year as a Bears fan I wanted no part of him being the Bears HC, and not because I'm an ND fan.

Media.

I think he absolutely nailed the Golden and Denbrock hires. Having reach to assemble an NFL staff is a hell of a lot different, though.

He learns from his mistakes and he has had some very tough lessons in that regard. Andy Ludwig, Marshall, NIU, etc.

This is a great question that is worth asking. At the moment, he's absolutely a college guy.

I would say he is a better college guy. But he no doubt is a leader of men. I think he would be successful ceo type hc in nfl

Flores isn't going to get another HC job until he resolves his lawsuit with the NFL and in a selfish way as a Vikings fan I'm sort of glad about that.

Antonio Pierce, eh. The Raider are the local team so I get subjected to their games and that was very rough. I think AP needs to marinate more as an assistant coach before he's really ready to be a HC again.

Brian Flores had a lawsuit against the Giants after Daboll got hired. I think it's safe to remove him as a possibility.

I don't want it to be McCarthy, but it makes too much sense. They are going to go after a previous HC who has won.

Edit - To keep it very on topic, I don't think Freeman is "proven" enough yet for the Maras

Giants fan here. Crazy enough, John Mara, the owner, has said ownership will be conducting the search and process. If Freeman is smart he’ll stay clear of NY. The Giants are one of the worst run organizations who hire family members to hold prominent positions within the organization that suck.

Including, funnily enough, former ND employee Tim McDonnell
