I was at ND nite in Palm Beach Gardens last Friday. Chuck Lennon was the guest speaker, who was great by the way.

But after his speech he opened it up for questions. And all of the questions were about Weis, no surprise, but by the way some of these questions were worded it seemed like a good bunch of the Alumnus actually wants to see Charlie Fail!?

I can't understand this point of view, if Charlie fails we fail, I just cant fathom these guys that actually went to notre dame would root against their coach.

Just thought I'd see what you guys thought.

Hmm. Sounds kind of bogus to me. I personally like Charlie Weis, Now dont get me wrong; I have gotten on him during last season but I'm not giving up on him yet. I give him 2 more years. If we dont win at least 7 games this year and win a bowl then he might be in some trouble. With these recruiting classes coming in though I give him 2 years to prove himself with HIS players. If he cant do anything with what he's got coming in and win a goddamn bowl game then I will be calling for his head along with alot of other people.

I understand it to a certain extent because of his out of control ego but he has been a lot better as of late. He is one of those guys you either love or hate...I for one love him as a coach/recruiter and think he has grown a lot since being at ND!

I can't love Charlie after last season and getting blown out in 2 BCS bowl games. That was dam embrassing. But I don't hate him either. I like what he has done recruiting wise, but all of those players are still very unproven. I like what he stands for and what he did to the coaching staff. Ask me after the USC game. That will be the pitoval point in his coaching career.

I'll take it one step further, Polish. I love Charlie, but I think he's got til the scUM game. If he can't beat that team this year, things might not be headed in the right direction, even with a 7 or 8 win season.

As a person, I'm inclined to really, really like the guy. As a recruiter, I think he's unbelievable. As a coach, I've got some serious doubts right now.

I'm with him 100%. Hey... who you guys think can replace him? Tell me that. Come on.. Tell me. You ain't got nothin but an empty tank and a bunch of half hearted "He gotta win this or that or i am out of it" crap. The Alum can go suck nuts as we ND fsans rule.

Once again tell me who could replace Charlie? Give me a name so we can go investigate.

This isn't Ty Willingham...Yawn.

Well he is handing over the reigns off the offense, which can only mean more consistency next year. Next year will be indicative of whats to come. I say he has 2 years max to get this program in top shape, no more excuses his players will be seniors.

Let me start by saying I did not want to replace CW...but you want a name..I give you a name...How about a legacy...I undersized player who went to community college, study hard got into ND, walked on to the football team as WR, graduated, become the OC (and was the OC last time we won a bowl game), left to build a program and brought them into Division 1 (UConn), went and coach in the toughest conference in America, and then became a head coach again and is doing pretty darn well...well you wanted a name, Holtz

I think weis will be a good coach. I beleive he really found out last year that he had to adjust to the college game Johns and Joes not X's and O's. Hopefully he will have made vast improvements in that area for the upcoming season!

He's still learning how to be a head coach. His first two teams were basically handed to him on a sliver platter. They were talented enough to win some ball games, but not talented enough to hang with the elite BCS teams. Then the wheels came off when all of his talent left and he had to make due with a bare bones roster.

Three years is still too little time to judge what a college football coach can do. You need 5 full years to see what a guy is like. That gives him time to get one full senior class through. At that point you can see what he's like as a recruiter and as a coach.

To this point, he's shown some pretty good growth as a coach. He's handing over the reigns of his offense in his fourth season. It took Mark Richt longer to do the same thing at Georgia. He's also shown that he's willing to make coaching changes among his assistants when it's warranted.

All in all he's been an above average coach. But above average doesn't win National Titles. Excellent wins National Titles.

I can only say one thing about Charlie Weis....

No one loves this University more than he does, no one holds the sport of football with higher integrity than he does. This program will not have recruiting violations under his tenure, this program will not have recruiting classes ranked lower than 25th under his tenure.

No one will work harder than he will, and no one will care more for this university than he will. He might not be the best coach, but I would not rather have anyone else represent this university than the man that truly loves and is willing to change, and do anything it takes to get this program back up on top.

I honestly thought this program was never going to be a powerhouse again after Lou Holtz left, now.... I think we are on our way back.

I'm not trying to start anything, but I have to make one observation about your post.

That sounds like a Penn State fan defending Joe Paterno.

I know that Charlie has made mistakes; but I also think he learns from his mistakes ( sometimes he does them over and over before he learns ). He also isn't afraid to make the tough decisions and I feel that he is the man for the job hopefully the team and coaches show us more this year than last...shouldn't be to hard.

My faith in The Mad Scientist is still strong. The man is a great human being, great recruiter and a good coach. Does anybody else realize that the Patriost hasn't won Super Bowl since he left ( and he didn't have Randy Moss ). Yes the yhad a perfect regular season, but you have to believe that he would of made some adjustment at halftime to pull that game out. .Prediction in the next five years we will have a National Championship team coach by that man. Believe it and it will come.

LET'S GO DAME!!!

he has definately taken a great amount of criticism this year, some of it deserved, some of it not so much. but i do think he has learned from his mistakes and we will see a much better head coach who will make the most of both his talents as well as his staff. a few things i am excited about:

1. Full speed practices in the offseason should make for a much tougher and better prepared football team.

2. Haywood taking over most of the playcalling will be a much smoother operation, giving Weis more time to help develop the QBs as well as every other responsibility a head coach has. Whenever a coach is willing to take a step back and just let his staff do their jobs, good things will happen.

3. His comments he made about spending more time with the entire team are very encouraging. players are always more motivated to go all out for a guy who they have a strong relationship with. they will be more concerned about letting him down should they make mistakes rather than simply getting yelled at.

these changes combined with the awesome talent coming in should make for a scary football team within a year or two.

First of all I am glad you got to listen to Chuck Lennon, I known him all of my life and there is not a better Notre Dame man out there. Most of all there is not a better human being out there. As far as Charlie goes well is he gonna be the savior I don't know but will he try the hardest and do things right yes. One has to quantify what they want in a Coach. Wins Losses, GPA from players, graduating players, clean program. We can never have them all. Hell even Holtz made some questionable calls on some of his recruits. I believe Charlie will do the job but if not I am sure Tom Clements will come in and do the job. Hmmm
