Hughes from USC and Dawson from Louisville? so the staff got first person evaluations on a transfer and went and got them?

Dawson yes, and with Hughes perhaps if someone evaluates guys standing on the sidelines the entire game😶

Hughes played against ND.

Jamie from ISD did a profile of him looking at a couple plays against ND's OL.
He did play a couple of snaps in the game after Thanksgiving but nothing worthwhile, about like evaluating a kicker making 2 extra points.

His point was ND took a backup/reserve guy with limited snaps in his career.
He said they evaluated him sitting on the sideline the entire game, which is not true. He played. A decent amount.

And given that ND has Dawson, Rubio and Hinish back, plus several freshmen and sophomores in fold, he's not likely going to be a guy called upon to play more than 20 snaps unless he either makes a jump, which is possible, or injuries.

No, it's not. Not even close.

ISD wouldn't have an entire profile dedicated to how he performed against ND if it were just 2-3 snaps.

I don't want to pretend like Hughes is this grand slam uber elite player. He didn't start and it would shock me if he started here. But he did play quite a bit and showed enough on film for the staff to like him enough to offer him.

It was an obvious attempt at being facetious on his part because again… Hughes was a rotational, but mostly reserve player at USC.

Interesting the addition likely means Shuler plays more of a FS role next season. On many plays the safeties are interchangeable for Golden but Stroman definitely profiles as more of a SS

Hughes, as an UG transfer, is clearly being brought in as a depth piece for this year with the potential upside for next.

Rubio has performed admirably. Our run D will be in good shape with him in the middle next to Dawson.

Is Rico Flores the only player that has left ND, thus far during the NIL era, that we presumably would have wanted to stay? In other words, I'm guessing all the other guys transferred out because other schools offered a better opportunity/wanted them more(not sure exactly how to word this better). Would Logan Diggs be in this category as well? Just curious as my memory/info is pretty crappy on this. thanks in advance!

There are a lot of teams out there with work left to do in the portal. Typically the winter window was more active than the spring. I wonder if the spring window will be more active this year?

Just MO, but I would think this winter one will always be the most active window, but with NIL even frothier, and potential 5th year changes and developing GTs, and of course, QBs and others seeing they may not be starting in the Fall, should be decent activity, but we'll see.

Nana Osafa-Mensah would’ve been good to have this year (I think he was like second team all-Big 12 at TCU?). I think Jacob Lacey went on to good things at Oklahoma?
But both those guys left bc they’d been passed over. Nana was basically pushed out right?
I liked Diggs but wouldn’t say we’ve missed him, really, given other RBs on the roster. I’m not sure where Flores would’ve landed in our WR rotation this year but he’s not better than our first-line guys.
Point is we haven’t yet lost a transfer we couldn’t easily replace. I’ve been worried that this portal season will test that - just bc good players seem to be jumping for bags all over the sport right now and eventually that’ll be one of ours - but hopefully our deep playoff run fends that off.

He played 19 snaps in his career (very minimal) vs Notre Dame and has registered NO STATS to speak of, so yes he was basically on the sideline 90% of the time against Notre Dame in his 2 years (18 snaps). I wasn't being literal but if your evaluating a WR and determining how good he is over 2 years who has 0rec 0yds on 0targets in games against us pretty sure those games wouldn't be the measuring stick.
