This staff doesn’t really close well in November. I feel like there are stories like this at the end of every cycle.

Only explanation can be upfront NIL for us to be so close and whiff on all of these recruitments.

Freeman is going to dip real fast if the admin doesn’t change course here.

Schools can’t give money until these courts figure everything out. Right now it’s alumni/fans that have to step up. Look at Michigan- it’s a couple of rich alum. Our rich alum appear willing to dole out money to transfers

IDK what else they can do. I'm sure everyone else is offering the house to high school kids.

However this dude has been close to the vest from the start idk how he's getting a feel for that unless he's got first hand account
Didn't Freeman make a comment over the summer that they want to be a program that is all about recruiting? Well, if that's the case, then they need to start dropping bags for elite and top-end prospects. If they're not going to drop bags for recruits and instead do that for the portal, then they truly need to go all-in. When the Caleb Downs' of the world come available in the portal you need to buy them. If you're not going to get them out of HS because you're not going to give them a bag when they're recruits, then you need to buy them when they hit the portal. From what was reported, it sounded like ND put very little effort to try and get Downs when he left Bama, which is infuriating. It can't just be guys from the portal with only 1 year of eligibility left. I'm still confused on what the direction is. Either they're going to drop bags for top-tier prospects or be fine with the players they're signing and go all-in with the portal.

At least at that point Bryan Kelley should be available again…

A big problem is that ND, for whatever reason, isn't allowing fans to contribute to their NIL collective. Pretty much all of the SEC schools allow their fans to help chip in to buy HS recruits and studs from the portal. Ohio State allows their fans to do the same thing. There's no reason to not allow fans to contribute. The official ND Football Twitter account has 680K followers. If just 100k fans made 1 yearly payment of $20, that would be $2 Million in additional NIL funds. I have no doubt that fans would be able to contribute more than that.

Last two years we've finished with the 38th and 40th ranked portal classes. The hope that we're a 2nd tier school for true recruting being that we're some portal kings is a total myth. Everyone gets dogs in the portal.

Those rankings don’t really mean shit. We took like 7 portal guys and Indiana brought in 40. Of course our ranking is lower based on those metrics—by “average rank” we were 10th.

I wish they'd show average rankings for the portal classes so it is easier to see. But our averages were 88.5 in both 2023 and 2024. If you just manually tally the teams above that, were not top 10 in portal average either year.

So basically were top 40 in portal overall score, about 15th on average portal class rating. Neither are top tier.

I literally counted the 2024 rankings from the top 50 they show on 24/7 and we were 10th 🤷🏼‍♂️.

Yeah, this is getting out of hand. It's one thing to lose one or two guys but we are going to lose like 10 guys this cycle because of this.

TN, MO, GA, Miami, OSU, FSU, TX, Bama, Oregon, FL all higher unless I'm crazy (scrolling fast).

But we're definitely not killing it in the portal. We're about what we are in recruiting, a 2nd tier ~12th ranked class based on talent.

There isn't anything stopping fans from starting their own collective is there? School can't stop fans

I remember after he visited in spring, everyone assume he would commit. But then you heard that USC, who hadn't recruited him in months, started talking again and he was gonna give them a summer visit.

Yiu guys keep varying about NIL, academics, and all these other excuses you create in these boards. Maybe, he just always wanted to go to USC. Believe it or not, other schools also have fans and hometown kids that want to go to those schools.

So after Holtz it was the academic standards until Weis showed up and started landing 4* and 5* guys, then with Kelly it was the RKGs and now it's us getting NIL'd....I need to start selling bottles of air to ppl if they really believe thats all it is at this point.

ND had the NIL money for Deuce, but they can't get the NIL money for Faraimo?? There has got to be more to this recruitment & recruiting in general if ND isn't going to be competitive for NIL.

For the NOB/Sneed. I think if ND gets NOB then Sneed transfers. My gut feeling says ND doesn't get NOB. Sneed has been playing really well and is one of MF's boys. I think Sneed sticks around for next year.

ND is not a top NIL school for portal or recruits. This is a hard pill for ppl to swallow, especially for the mythical portal where everyone thinks ND is a top tier NIL for some reason. We are zone 3 boarders.

Deuce got NIL'd from us, Keon Keely, Dante Moore, Justin Scott, Nico, Derrick Meadows, the recent list is fairly obvious we're behind the serious programs.

And someone will say "yeah but how are those guys playing?" And that's not the point. And all this would be perfectly fine if we actually had a leading NIL for the portal but we don't.

I don’t think this one is NIL. A poster at 247 who knows the family has said all along ND was the leader. However, he’s heard recently the kid is having a hard time leaving home and that is what may have changed things.

We are about to win the Natty and all you complain about is how much our recruiting sucks. You should stop and enjoy this special season

High school kids. Yeah, pretty clear we're not throwing huge bags at high school kids. I don't think anyone here thought we were, at least at the level of the teams that those sort of players are going to. (And if the point is winning football games, I do think it's fair to ask how those guys are playing, which, except for Nico, is not very much or well).

Portal's a little different. We went and got the top QB on the market each of the last two years and have picked up a variety of other good pieces as well (JJB, Harper, Clark, all this year's WRs). That doesn't happen without NIL. Are we landing elite younger transfers - like, say, Caleb Downs? No. But that's largely because of admissions rules, not NIL.

Maybe the most important part these days. I can't think of a good player we've had poached. Other teams seem to lose starters to better offers all the time now. But nearly all our outbound transfers have been guys who don't play or were getting passed over, while our starters stick, and this year several excellent football players passed on the draft to play another year in college. You think that doesn't happen without good NIL packages? And yes I'd much rather have Rylie Mills playing USC today than Justin Scott.

I'd rather have both and so would MF. Downshifting to consolation prizes isn't a winning mindset. Also, Cam Ward was the top QB portal last year and is making the most $$.

Your point on retaining players stands, however. But what top tier talent have we been pumping out that OSU would be interested in stealing? Not a lot of meat on that bone lately.

But whatever, it's USC day so I'm not going to go on about how we're slowly falling behind on recruiting (classes and portal) while every other serious school continues crank it up.

Fuck USC. Fuck Lincoln Riley specifically. And fuck the refs last night.

ND is hard. ND has about 1/8 the female population of every other football school. South Bend is boring and cold. ND will give you the chance to be a millionaire over the next 40 years. Other schools will make you one overnight.

There is a lot working against ND.

I suspect anyone good enough to start on our defense has some options/offers. The RBs and some of the OL/TEs, too.
And this offseason may put my theory to the test, I suspect it'll be nuts with tampering. Good reason to make a deep playoff run so we're still playing when the major portal stuff is going down. That starts with stomping USC today. Go Irish.

This has been discussed on a few times on paid sites. We do have the KVA family in our corner.
