They lost a lot of players in the portal and we’re not great last year… 18 in and 23 out typically teams aren’t great with that much turnover… not without a nfl qb

They have the volume in the portal but other than Scourton, I don’t think a single one of those transfers would start at ND. Good for depth purposes, but their portal losses far outweigh their gains.
When you recruit like they did in 2021, the losses will always outweigh the incoming players.

They still have 4, 5-star DL on the squad from the 2021 class before any transfers. They're filling in nicely with what they already have on the team.

I get what you’re saying, but even 5 stars don’t hit at 100% clip. The 5 stars that did hit in Nolan and LT Overton are both gone. I don’t mean to minimize how good A&M should be, because they still have a ton of talent, but a lot of their most productive pieces have left. Honestly Weigman worries me more than anyone else they’ve recruited that’s still on the team. Guy was super efficient before he got injured.

I actually did some research on this in the offseason. Here are the 5-star recruits (per 247 composite) from the 2013-2017 classes who have "hit." By "hit" I mean were either drafted or have played in at least 1 NFL game as a UDFA:

2017: 26/33 (78.8%)
2016: 19/26 (73.1%)
2015: 26/37 (70.3%)
2014: 26/33 (78.8%)
2013: 27/35 (77.1%)

Total: 124/164 (75.6%)

That’s kind of a low bar. If you’re not at least a draft pick your performance is probably pretty close to a 3/4 star.

By my count, all but 14 of the 124 5-stars were undrafted. So that would make it 67% of the 5-star recruits from 2013-2017 that have been drafted.

And to this point…Giddyup!!! You may want to read the attached and hopefully, rethink your position.

Not disputing this data. The point was 5/8 of 5 stars in that class transferred and those were generally the ones who have hit, while the only one remaining that is probably pretty safe to be included in your criteria is Weigman. Brownlow Dindy is a bust. Jury is out on Shemar Stewart.

Hicks in their 2023 class is probably good. 1 5 star in their 2021 class in Shemar Turner who has been solid. Next best DL transferred in that class.

A&M has a ton of talent still, but it’s not this unslayable beast thanks to the portal (and their general dysfunction)

Sounds like ND has the inside track on the DB Rod Heard from Northwestern. ISD reporting it’ll be down to Michigan or ND. If he’s being pursued by both ND and Michigan then I have to assume he’s a quality player but I know nothing of Northwestern and their DBs.
…. except that they were sexually assaulted by their teammates when they were freshman.

Anyway, Heard seems like a decent slot corner. Not the biggest fan of pff but
“in his redshirt senior season, Heard has posted the highest Pro Football Focus grade (71.5) not just of his career, but also among Wildcat defenders”

I am interested to see this second wave of players entering the portal after spring ball. Might need to hold a few spots open. I think we may lose a few more players to portal or medical. Bauman. Colzie, Kristofic, Gobaira, Tucker, and maybe Lewis.

Also, what happens to Sneed if he still can not pick up the defense.

ALL LB's should be worried ASA is a stud and gonna play and should be starting eventually next year. Kid has it and is very good at rushing

Gobaira is the only one I wouldn't want to lose (if he has or is expected to fully recover) from your list. I would also add junior to your list. He just can't see the field with the talent we have and are bringing in.

I don't want to lose any of them, depth is key - not withstanding judgement against their playing ability.
