Creativity vs Lots of Experience

Wasn't to sure where to post this so feel free to move it mods.

So with everyone going on about the direction with a possible new OC one thing came to mind. Are we okay with going after a Young creative mind who is prospering now and would relate better to the players or go after a Ludwig or Golden who are vastly experienced but are not very well versed in the other aspects of the game. Quick note is that I think we all agree if there was a switch the new hire must be a somewhat experienced coordinator that has called plays. I ask this because I am very interested in two options that would be out there for us in Kirby Moore out of Mizzou and Lindgren out of Oregon state. They both fit but they fit more towards the angle of younger and creative than vastly experienced.

it needs to be a successful play caller with a good track record. experience and/or creativity don't necessarily mean anything.

Putting the cart before the horse here. Statistical evidence might sway MF to keep Parker. I hope he at least brings in a veteran co-oc.

We have a loaded offensive class who is no doubt contemplating things so get someone who can relate shouldn't be thrown to the side. That said most important thing is to get right guy.

I think you want to either go the Saban method (i.e. re-tread former head coaches like we've done for Golden at DC) or you want to go the Elko method (i.e. hire someone with a "system" + a protege and then try to establish/maintain continuity).

It's still CFB, recruiting is still paramount. Look at our defensive class vs offensive class. Parker recruits harder than Golden.

Paul Chryst has been successful until the lack of talent caught up to him. not sure which other former hc’s are out there. Jason Garrett?

No, we can’t say we don’t care. If the staff and new AD are going to be intentional in their search, then let’s take the time to get it right and open up to younger and older, but let’s make sure the OC is experienced and successful enough; can find ways to connect to players, MF & other coaches; be a good recruiter; and be able to adapt. If he has all that, should work out well

Find an OC that knows how to design an offensive system and has experience calling those plays during a game. There’s enough of them out there that would want the job.

And developing the offense … our players have no clue what they’re doing on O so obvious offensive practice is awful

Probably an underrated skill is game prep. So someone who knows how to do that too.

I like Freeman, but the biggest issue starts with him and his mentality. Yes you need to win with offensive and defensive lines. However, there needs to be an emphasis on the pass game and receivers. These receivers could be stars or at least players in other systems like Washington. This is a head coach approach. I think he can grow but this is a Freeman issue maybe even as much as a Parker issue.

Completely agree and I think this is being undersold on the beat right now (although Prister mentioned it post Clemson)...it's likely that Parker is just running what Freeman wants him to run. Not necessarily the play calling, per se, but the overall "identity" of the offense. It's been mentioned before that Freeman is a fan of "Tressel Ball." It's also been mentioned by Jamie U that guys like Sean Lewis were passed on because they throw too much. At the end of the day, Freeman is responsible for the identity and culture of his program. Where he chooses to go from here can make or break him as a head coach.

Personally, I don't have a problem with big boy football. OL/DL, power run, great defense.....that's almost always a recipe for success and typically, those types of teams travel well --> Something Freeman and staff HAVE TO figure out is why they play poorly on the road with this style of team. With that said, a team who can't score at will also creates a situation where the margin for error is much smaller. Lose the turnover battle, lose the game. FGs instead of TDs in the redzone, lose the game. Top producer on offense gets hurt, lose the game. Etc. Freeman needs to find a balance between being an old school power program versus today's new age air raid offenses. You don't have to fully commit to one or the other. Do so at your own peril, I suppose.

Need an OC with enough experience that Freeman can just give him the keys to the offense so Freeman can focus on situational football, time management, etc. If need be, he can assist with an eventual younger DC. But on the OC side...has to be someone with virtual autonomy barring some high level requirements from Freeman.

And yet the offense is dog shit, so does it even matter?
Well none of Parkers commits are on campus yet so that's not a fair point. I agree experience is obviously #1 but recruiting can't be Golden 2.0 IMO.
