How good is Dayne Crist

Right now the big guns like Rivals.com and even smaller sites like NCAARecruitingScoop.com have ND's 2008 class ranked number one. The number one commit in that class is Dayne Crist. Last season, our number one commit, actually the number one commit in the nation was Jimmy Clausen. Has anyone seen Crist play in high school? Is he the same level of player as Clausen?

Personally I think Crist is better. I'm gonna get blasted for that comment but thats what I think. I'm not taking anything away from jimmy though. Crist is gonna be good.

it's a great problem to have because crist, i believe, is at clausens level. however, while i will never be qualified to be a college football coach, I believe Weis should redshirt crist and let clausen develop. That way we can have crist to extend our national championship/heisman run :).

my reasoning being they are both extremely talented and they both utilized the same private qb coach. that's why they are friends.

How good is Crist? Who knows.

We don't even how good JC is. Hell, Powlus was supposed to come in and wow us, and I still remember cursing him, and the coaches for continuing to start him.

Crist has the tools to be great but right now we have no idea... Just because he is great in HS doesnt mean that he will automatically be a stud in College, (although i think and hope he will be). For that reason I dont see how people can compare him to Clausen who has had NCAA experience

Well there isn't an objective comparison between the two but there are ways of comparing them.

They aren't exactly the same QB, for example, because Crist has the legs to move around a lot more whereas Jimmah is more of a pocket passer.

In terms of there respective levels at the end of their senior year in HS, Jimmy seems to be the better of the two. Crist is one of the elite in his year but JC was head and shoulders above the rest. I don't means in terms of statistics because Clausen had a lot more to work with and (supposedly) easier competition. Dayne's real advantage is that he is bigger and stronger (it's unlikely Jimmy will ever be 6'5") while his disadvantage is that he isn't as polished.

If Clausen can make the physical strides the staff wants him to in the offseason he should be able to remain as the starter until he is done at ND (hopefully leaving via draft day and with a degree in hand). But if he ever gets injured I think Crist will be good enough coming off the bench to win it for us (not just keep us in it).

My 2c.

Also they are at different leves maturity wise. Jimmy was roughtly 2 years older as a Sr than Crist as a SR. Which makes Dayne look all the better, IMO

I have heard similar statements. He could well be better...we will know in 5-6 years. ;)

We are starting to have the same problems as USC, too many good players, players who don't like competing with the best transfer, I'm loving it!!!!

Also keep this in mind, beyond Jimmy being 2 years older. Jimmy enrolled in January to get a handle on the offense and attend spring practice. I havent hear anything about Dayne doing the same thing. That leads me to believe that a redshirt year is forthcomming.

Crist has an advantage in physical abilities, but Clausen is far more polished. Crist will benefit from 2-3 years on the bench because he has some weaknesses that can be fixed while working behind Clausen. He has a cannon and is fairly accurate but like JC he struggles reading a defense. Watch his tapes he telgraphs almost every pass in his games but because he is playing at a High School level he can get away with it. Let him learn the offense behind JC then he can take over and we will have no drop off in QB production.

I agree with superfan. Although I have not seen him play, I would say give him a redshirt and let him learn how to play college football. No need to rush him. We already have a very capable starter IMO

I think that both guys have the ability to be AWESOME!!! Just my opinion, but I believe that Dayne has a higher ceiling than Jimmy. Here is why. Jimmy has had much more tutoring of the small points of being a QB. He had his brothers, a personal coach and is just plain older. Jimmy is gonna loook better in 2008, just because of his physical strength and having time with the QB's. I really believe in 2008, we will see Jimmy hit that next level in his passing game and ability to read. He will never run better or have the physical size of Dayne. Dayne will need the 2 years he is behind Jimmy to understand the O and become a polished passer. As for the upside of Dayne, he runs much better than Jimmy. Further, he has an absolute cannon for an arm. At his size, he will be tough for a defender to bring down. As someone else pointed out, it is so nice to have the depth issues that many other programs among the elite are struggling with.

I've heard that Jimmy had much better recievers in H.S. than Crist has had. Any truth to that?

Being undefeated in four years of football leads me to believe this is true, not having any facts, just a guess. I saw their roster last year, can't remember names, and there were quite a few D1 guys.

The best thing IMO is that Dayne has already stated he wants to compete for the job, but also understands that he may sit until his Jr year. The boy flat out gets IT!!!

Jimmy is gonna loook better in 2008, just because of his physical strength and having time with the QB's.

Plus, he won't have to go against a 'killer' schedule next year (at least not like the 1st 8 games this past year)! Not saying it's a push-over schedule, but there's no comparison between the toughness of 2007 and 2008 schedules.
