Ok Down to 4 of our top choices as Tedford signs extension with Cal.

1. Bobby Petrino
2. Dan Hawkins
3. Charles Weis
4. Butch Davis (Said he wants to take break so probably wont get him)

I heard a rumor that Lou Holtz will coach the '05 season so that we can get Butch Davis in '06.

I also heard Kent Baer will coach us if we win our bowl game and dont have a different coach hired.

I also heard Ron Turner (Illini 3-8) would be interested in ND.

I heard Ty willingham was fired so that he could get 2 paychecks (one from ND and one from Washington)

What r your thoughts

ESPN has written on their website that Dan Hawkins has already signed a contract extension with Boise State. I don't know if this is in stone, but it seems like he may be out of the running.

Are there any other articles that mention Jim Fassel as being interested. I read the Chicago Tribune and San Francisco chronicle both reported he would be interested in taking the job, which seems to me would really help recruiting. Most players want mostly to go the NFL so maybe a name like Fassel would be a blessing

I say if we can't get Fassel, we go after Weis, Wannstedt, and Petrino (in that order). I think Lou is too old and would worry about ruining the legacy if he retuned. In addition, it is being reported down here in South Carolina that Lou has remained on the USC coaching staff for next year to help with recruiting and administrative stuff.

Are we ever going to get a coach- time seems to me to be working against us and recruits are probably dropping like flies.

let's look at this rationally........
Bobby Petrino? After the Auburn fiasco, fuggaddaboudit.
Dave Wannstat? L-O-S-E-R
Butch Davis? Tainted cause he coached at Miami
l
ook at all the names that said no....
Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, Dan Hawkins, Kirk Ferentz, Jim Fassel, Chucky Gruden, Steve Mariucci, Jeff Tedford

Now lets look at some actual candidates
Charlie Weis...ND Alumn, god offensive guy
Tom Clements....Offensive guy, knows how to win at ND, backed by Joe Montana and Dave Duerson, Ulumn.
Mike Ditka... probably not a candidate, but a hard nosed guy chat could probably get recruits to come back to ND...also, a diciplinarian, so the teams' noses will be in the books
My guess would be to go with Tom Clements. He's a longshot, but so is everyone else. Let's keep it in the ND Family this time around.

Actually on ESPN it said he has been offered an extension but has not taken it yet - because he is interested in going to a different school. (ND he said was one of the other schools)

Charlie Weis. Give him the job already. He's known as a great teacher and play caller. Two things that will help him recruit. He also knows how to win, and what it will takes to get a kid to the NFL. Two things that will play well with recruits. Plus the whole Super Bowl Champion Patriots line, wont hurt.

He is credited with the development of Brady... I'd like to see what he can do with our Brady.

I just think he's what we need. A good coach who loves ND. Its easier to sell a product you believe in, and he believe's in ND. Give the man the job.

Well, the only thing that makes him a questionable choice is the fact that he doesn't really have big time head coaching experience. While I think he could do the job, I think he would be made or broken by his assistant coaches.

Say Weis is brough in, who are his assistant coaches?

Well it looks like the Browns might think Charlie is ready. Thats scary. No Weis, No Meyer, No Gruden, No Mooch, No Tedford, No Ferentz

Weis is for real. He would be my first choice, and yes he does have head coaching experience: He spent one year as a highschool Head Coach in New Jersey and won the State Championship. He then won three superbowls. Gimme a break.

Are you serious? You are counting high school football coaching as bonafide experience? As for the Super Bowls, being a head coach and an offensive coordinator are very different monsters.

I like Weis too. Some say his appearance may scare off recruits. But I think his name alone could lure some recruits. The man has 3 superbowl rings.

I don't know if ND will hire him. Coaching at ND you have to make alot of public appearance, go to cocktail parties, and wear a shirt and tie at all times. Weis isn't a shirt and tie guy, he's a sweat pants and sweat shirt kinda guy.

Rick Majerus for example was all set to come to ND and coach basketball, he told them look I'll graduate your kids and we'll win, but thats all I'm doin. They said you have to make the public appearances at all the dinners and cocktail parties and always wear a shirt and tie. He said forget it.

Can't say I blame him.

Yes, I am. The point is that he has dominanted at every level he has risen too. As a positions coach in the NFL, his players have alway received accolades. As an offensive coordinator in the NFL, he has won the championship with otherwise weak teams (don't forget what he did with the Jets). And in the one year he was a head coach, he won it all. Winning is more than simple luck and far more than habit. Winning is a sign that he knows what he's doing. At every level he does no more or less than what it takes to win with the players he is given.

Well if ND passes on him for that reason, then I'll stop being a ND fan. The average ND fan is from real america, we wear sweat shirts, and drink beer. We are normal hard working american's, and if they say weis isn't good enough for them that would be a slap in my face.

One question:
Since Weis is under contract until February, would ND be able to sign him and also have him work to get recruits (all the while coordinating NE offensive schemes)? If he is even in the running as a candidate, shouldn't we go after him now and make him an offer he can't refuse?

I still think NFL is the way to go. Signing 6th, 7th, and 8th choice college choices is undoubtedly going to be seen as a disappointment. I think we need someone relatively big to salvage the class of 2009. Weis works with me, but I can't believe Fassel backed down.

One more thing:
I don't think you can question Weis' coaching ability. After all, David Givens seemed like just an ordinary, run of the mill, college receiver when he was at ND, and now he is one of the Patriots top receivers doing Sirius commercials with John Madden. The guy obviously knows how to turn players into talented superstars. That's just my opinion.

I don't think you have to worry about ND turning Wies down because he isn't pretty...look at Rockne. He wasn't exactly a suit and tie guy either!

Well right now it looks like it is narrowing down to a couple of candidates -

1. Dan Hawkins (Has said he would take the ND job - but has an extension offer from Boise State for 2.6 million that ND wont match i think)
2. Charles Wies (Most Likely)
3. Butch Davis (Unlikely he wants to take a year off)

Gosh, Svoboda was a big negative on Weis, huh? And QueensNY's comments about his appearance are something else ...

No kidding! It strikes me as odd, though, that the things some of thought he'd excel at, teaching and play-calling, are exactly the areas he seems to have failed at this year.

CAVEAT: While I have been critical of the play-calling, I thought that cW did a GOOD job against Air Force uin that department, but that his D went to sleep and timely drops by Grimes killed another drive, to the point where CW's hand was forced and he HAD to go pass happy. In other words, the BOYS lost against Air Force by performing poorly. There was nothing seriously wrong with what they were told to do.

I would have agreed with you a few years back but I have been quite disappointed with the way his draft picks have developed in Tampa. Would he have been a better player development coach in college? I don't know.

Well, there were some iffy choices against Air Force, e.g. the 4th-down play and the decision not to punt from inside midfield. More generally, though, I think Weis's biggest problems have really been right where everyone expected: being a motivator. /That's/ been far and away the biggest deficiency with this year's team.

I respectfully disagree Johnny. I think CW biggest problem is getting these kids to play consistantly. I think that they have showed plenty of heart....especailly T-Laws and Kuntz on the D. I agree the offense could use a pick me up but when you can't score over a long period of time, players are going to give up....no matter what the sport or who the coach is. I've been there before, you feel so low that its very hard to get back up again. These players are looking in the past and realizing they're one of the worst teams in ND history and yet Weis at least gets them to play hard. They may not execute or be successful but for what I've seen for the most part, they're trying to get better and trying to make ND respectible once again. Another big thing in which I agree with you is that CW's decision making has got to get better or he will not make it past next season...
