Probably gets an offer today.

Thought to be an OU lean right now.

QB, MALACHI NELSON, NO. 6

Los Alamitos (Calif.) quarterback Malachi Nelson is currently the top rated player out West in the new Top247, checking in at No. 6. He’s the No. 2 quarterback nationally and has all the tools you could want in a next level signal caller. He’s off to a strong start to his junior season after a great off-season and he’s still only scratching the surface of how good we think he can be. He could be cutting his list of schools down shortly with Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas and USC a few we know are on his short list.

Tommy must've read he's on commit watch to OU... which he is.

Why de didn't get an offer on St Paddy's day baffles me.

Danny Hernandez thinks he's the #1 guy in '23.

Another QB offer right before they’re about to commit somewhere else? Haha, that would be hilarious.

Seems like you should have offered the 5 star, #2 QB a little bit sooner.

If true, that's a poor excuse. When you have some of these kids that are above the rest, we need to get on them asap. If they take a down turn in their following seasons, you can just step back from the offer.

Well that was fun while it lasted.

Biggins and Wiltfong laid down heavy CB's last night. The SC analyst too.

It's like Ashton Kutcher got him to offer him on camera for an episode of Punk'd

Seriously, this is getting comically bad. Of his last 5 QB offers, spanning both '22 and '23, 3 of the 5 were offered as they went into decision mode. You can't even take this seriously. How in the world do you expect to win these recruitments offering guys that have other big time offers right as they get into decision mode. This isn't like trying to steal a BC commit at WR. These are the best QB's in the country you are competing for. And, they are picking Bama, OU, and PSU. Or the guy that wasn't good enough that went to Clemson.

While the rest of college football has moved on, Rees is still waiting for in-person evals. Seriously.

Yep.....huge flaw in our recruiting process that needs to be addressed ASAP. Probably too late for '23, but needs to at the least be corrected by '24.

It is not too late for ‘23. Malachi Nelson and Arch are the only QBs you’ll see on nearly every offer list for our comparable teams. We are I’d say in line with a valid timeline offering Moore. The next batch lamaleava, Edge, etc have some major offers but not like they are piling them up while we watch. If those guys are not getting offers for months or at all, there may be a problem (assuming Moore hasn’t somehow committed) but Nelson and Manning are really the only two so far we are drastically “late” to the party on. Keeping in mind too how many just wrapped up their Sophomore “seasons”

What I would like to see is if you are going to go the route of being extra let’s phrase it as diligent I’d like to see one of these Edge, Iamleava type names pop up on a June visit list which should foreshadow an offer

I don't think it's too late for '23. There are still a lot of guys on the board that are pretty good ballers. But, I do think he needs to get more aggressive with offers, in general, and I'd like to see BK step in. Maybe they pick the top 5-6 QB's and tag team their recruitments or something like that. The evals need to be sped up. If Rees didn't think Malachi or Simpson or Allar were good enough, then that's a different conversation altogether. But, that's clearly not the case. What this is telling us is Rees is uncomfortable with offering this early based on some criteria that he's set. And, that seems to be a problem.

With all that said, Brayden Dorman will be on campus to throw and I really like that young man. And, with Covid likely behind us, there should be no impediments to getting in-person evals done. We'll see.

A June visit tour is likely and ND may get one of those visits. However, it seems unlikely to change things.

Let me just say, that I'm totally for a going down swinging approach here. But, if we're going to come in at the 11th hour to take a swing at this kid, then let's make sure it doesn't cost us two months with other guys. We simply cannot have these Simpson situations where the only reason we didn't offer Allar earlier was because we wanted to take a last minute swing at Simpson who was very unlikely from the start. Hey, Tommy, shoot your shot. Just make sure if you miss, you don't end up with nothing. If this is the only offer we send out between now and Malachi's commitment, then we're doing it wrong, again.

I missed Dorman’s planned visit. I see his Midwest tour now. Is he the only one so far? 247s Visit List doesn’t actually even have him confirmed and has no others yet. It sounds like OSU is thinking Cameron Edge from DeMatha may get on campus to land an offer I’d hope we join that sentiment

Something to cross off his bucket list.

Tommy and Del have taken on the same recruiting strategy and we see how that's going so far.

The only one that I've seen. Mike Singer put out a piece yesterday talking about quite a few '23 QB's to keep an eye on and he seemed to think some of those guys could visit but nothing confirmed.

I don't know if that's fair to say of Del. CJ Williams and Tobias Merriweather have been top targets of Del's for a long time and he communicates with the daily. At this point, WR recruiting hasn't been near the blunder QB recruiting has in the very recent history. Del is coming off a fantastic cycle last year (same could be said for Tommy with Buchner) and his current cycle looks fairly good right now. We'll see if he can close them. Again, of Tommy's last 5 offers, he'll more than likely see 3 of them commit to another school within 2 months of offering. He's just completely out of touch with is board. Del is at least grinding with his top targets and was in on them early. It's less about Tommy missing on these guys and more so the way he's going about it.

I take it Dorman and Clarkson were on his list. Who else? Chase Spellman? Avery Johnson? Nick Brown? RJ Johnson?

Dorman, Clarkson, Holstein, Sellers to name a few.

Thanks. I'll have to look up Sellers. Surprised Holstein made the list. I just included Holstein on a list of QB's I'd shut it down for. I followed some Bootlegger accounts and Holstein stands out every time a vid is posted. Have to put him under the microscope though it sure sounds like he'll be the LSU take this cycle... and TJ Finley just bailed today/last night.

I'd think Rickie Collins would be on the staffs list as well. I guess we'll have to see.

Top Underclass Performers (2023/24)

Malachi Nelson, Los Alamitos (Calif.), '23- Nelson seemed to really thrive in this camp setting where he could just have fun and throw. Although he's only a sophomore, Nelson has already been with one of the more heavily scrutinized quarterbacks in the region. He's a high profile kid but a very gifted one and the game just looks easy for him. He has a rare ability to put the football wherever he wants it and is already one of the nation's best pure throwers.
