Cretin star Floyd picks Notre Dame

Cretin-Derham Hall star wide receiver Michael Floyd said he didn't go to Notre Dame over the weekend intending to give a verbal commitment. But after spending two days around the team, Floyd made that decision Sunday afternoon.

"I just got that feeling that Notre Dame was the place I wanted to be," Floyd said. He said he planned on contacting other schools recruiting him, including the Gophers, to let them know his decision.

"This is it," he said. "I'm not going to take any more visits."

Teammate and friend Shady Salamon said he was not surprised. "I knew he was pretty excited about his trip," said Salamon, a Gophers recruit.

Said Cretin-Derham Hall assistant head coach Andy Bischoff: "He said he feels Notre Dame is the best place for him to succeed academically and in football."

Floyd said Notre Dame's 1-7 record and struggles on offense didn't concern him.

"They are a young team and play a lot of freshmen and sophomores," Floyd said. "I think this '08 recruiting class is going to bring a different fire to the team."

Floyd is rated the 11th-best wide receiver prospect in the nation by Rivals.com. His finalists included Minnesota, Ohio State, Michigan and Florida. Floyd has 35 catches for 717 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. He has rushed for 274 yards and two touchdowns, thrown a 24-yard touchdown pass and returned three punts for touchdowns.

I'm usually afraid to look at the recruiting section on any board due to this horrific season but right now I will make an exception.

WELCOME ABOARD!!!

Having some big, tall wide-outs is gonna help our passing game, I just hope he can get some much needed seperation that we seem unable to get this year.

Gipp great find. Great interview, so glad to have this kid at ND. I really believe him also when he said he didn't come to commit. I really believe our recruits had a lot to do with it.

According to twincities.com, Michael Floyd and Cretin Derham Hall advances to the 5A state championship game. Floyd led the team in receiving with 5 catches for 110 yards. They will play the winner between Eastview and Eden Prairie on November 23 at the Metrodome.

For others dying of recruit-itis since the last commit, here is a little Floyd v. Butler comparison

Takkle

For what it's worth I think both are great but I agree that the impressive thing out of the clips is how MF keeps his feet and picks up 6 points at the end of almost every play.

(Via the Roundup.)

Happy 18th birthday to 2008 WR commit Michael Floyd, who just this morning was named Minnesota's 2007 high school football player of the year by the Pioneer Press, for the second straight season:

The only thing missing is the Class AAAAA state championship. Eden Prairie quashed that opportunity for Floyd with a 50-21 victory over the Raiders in Friday night's title game at the Metrodome.

The disappointing end to Floyd's prep football career won't damage his stature as one of the best high school receivers in Minnesota history. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior drew comparisons the past couple of seasons to former Holy Angels star Larry Fitzgerald Jr., now in his fourth NFL season with the Arizona Cardinals.

Floyd, who has committed to Notre Dame, finished the season ranked No. 81 among the nation's top 100 seniors by Rivals.com, a leading national scouting service for high school football. Rivals.com ranks Floyd at No. 13 among receivers nationally.

Despite double-team coverage and a variety of defenses geared to stop him, Floyd had 56 catches for 1,211 yards and 17 touchdowns to help Cretin-Derham Hall finish with a 13-1 record. He averaged 21.6 yards a catch and ran for three touchdowns.

...

The national signing date for high school football players to make formal commitments to colleges isn't until Feb. 6. That's plenty of time for Floyd to re-think his plan to attend Notre Dame in the fall of 2008, but no chance.

"I won't be changing my mind," he said.

Exactly what we want to hear.

Congratulations, Mr. Floyd. And Irish fans, if you haven't read the profile of Michael that I excerpted a few weeks ago after his commitment, now's the time to do just that.

Apparently Floyd has been tearing it up on the b-ball court. Last week he put up 38 on Eden Prairie, the school that beat them in the state football championship.

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - West notebook: The circus act

Floyd shows off his skills

Michael Floyd had the catch of the day in Wednesday's practice.
One of the more impressive moments during Wednesday's West practice in the Alamo Dome was a spectacular one-handed catch made by St. Paul (Minn.) Cretin-Derham Hall wide receiver Michael Floyd.

The 6-foot-3, 200 pound Notre Dame commit hauled a ball in from Parkway City (Mo.) West quarterback Blaine Gabbert that had no business being caught. The ball was completely over thrown, but Floyd jumped up and pulled it in with his left hand.

"I was about ready to tell Blaine (Gabbert) don't worry about it because he over threw him," Jones said. "Then his hand came out of nowhere like Spiderman and brought it down. It was great catch. It was unbelievable.

"I don't know about the kids, but I'm just starting to get those butterflies in my stomach to watch these kids play."

Haha thats awesome.

I can't wait for this class to come in and erase the heartache of this past season. I know we make a big deal about losing guys like Omar and all, and ofcourse that hurts, but the guys that we have that are fully committed to ND are no less amazing. I can't wait to see the studs of this class wearing those golden helmets.
