One Cretin-Derham Hall player, Michael Floyd, was so impressive at the Notre Dame camp that coach Charlie Weis made a scholarship offer through the Raiders' coaching staff. High school juniors can't be directly offered tenders until Sept. 1.

Floyd, a 6-foot-3, 193-pound wide receiver, received a private workout with Weis and former Irish quarterback Ron Powlus. Floyd, who ran a 4.5-second 40-yard dash at the workout, ran every route Weis and Powlus wanted and caught every pass.

Minnesota and Iowa also have offered tenders to Floyd, and because the Gophers were the first school to offer, their offer is expected to get serious consideration.

Cretin-Derham graduates who will play for Notre Dame this season are left tackle Ryan Harris, a preseason All-American who is projected as a first-round pick in next April's NFL draft; tight end Marcus Freeman; and offensive right guard Matt Carufel.

Former Irish running back Rashon Powers-Neal, also a Cretin-Derham Hall grad, will be in training camp with the Denver Broncos this summer. Carufel, who will be a freshman, has been in South Bend working out and is expected to see playing time this fall as a second-team lineman.

Rivals is reporting that Michael Floyd received an offer today. I'm still waiting to confirm from a secondary source.

Looks for a fight between us and Minnesota for this kid. Same school as Ryan Harris, RPN, Carufel, etc. Very solid high school football program so let's hope we land him.

I just wanted to let everybody know that this kid looks great. I live in MN and just saw the highlights of his game today. He broke loose for a 70+ yard touchdown pass. He is big, quick, and extremely mobile. Just thought I would let you know.

This kid is the real deal! Floyd has another field day scoring 4 times in a 42-14 rout of the defending Minnesota state champs. Floyd had 10 receptions for 173 yards and four touchdowns

Cretin-Derham made Friday night a nightmare for them by scoring on its first five possessions to hand Roseville its first loss this year, 47-15 at O'Shaughnessy Stadium on the University of St. Thomas campus.

Tailback Shady Salamon contributed 95 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, and he caught three passes for 49 yards and another TD. And Michael Floyd caught his seventh and eighth TD passes of the season while making four receptions for 80 yards.

Football: Junior wide receiver Michael Floyd is being pursued by some of the nation's top college programs.

Cretin coach Mike Scanlan said the 6-foot-1 Floyd is attracting serious interest from Miami (Fla.), Southern Cal, Florida, Florida State, Texas and Notre Dame, which already has offered Floyd a scholarship.

"I'm getting five or six pieces of mail for Michael from schools every day," Scanlan said.
Floyd has 24 catches for 510 yards and 10 touchdowns for Cretin (5-0, 4-0 Suburban East Conference).

Floyd kick-starts Raiders

The feats of Cretin-Derham Hall wide receiver Michael Floyd are growing by the week.

Floyd, a strong, fast and elusive pass catcher, is leaving opposing high school defenses in his wake, and he already has top Division I schools hovering like vultures. The junior gave college recruiters and fans another jaw-dropping, head-shaking performance with his catch-and-run playmaking that bailed Cretin-Derham Hall out of early trouble Friday night.

Floyd caught 10 passes for a school-record 228 yards and scored a touchdown to help propel the Raiders to a 28-7 victory over White Bear Lake in a Suburban East Conference game at O'Shaughnessy Stadium on the University of St. Thomas campus. Joe Springer completed 19 of 26 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns for the Raiders (6-0). He has 20 touchdown passes this season and no interceptions.

No. 2-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall was flirting with potential disaster early in the game, when its potent offense wasn't clicking. The Raiders were held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time all season by an aggressive Bears defense that kept pushing Cretin-Derham Hall into third-and-long situations.

But when the Raiders found their groove, Floyd, along with Springer, set the tempo.

On Cretin-Derham Hall's first scoring drive, the Raiders faced third and 16 from their own 14-yard line. One crossing pass later, Springer hit Floyd for a 28-yard gain. Moments later, a sack by White Bear Lake's Derek Weber pushed Springer for a 10-yard loss. Floyd responded with a 12-yard run. Floyd struck twice more on the 16-play, 80-yard drive by catching a 20-yard pass on another crossing route and gaining 9 yards on second and long.

"I wasn't really concerned about our offense not clicking," said Floyd, who caught eight passes for 169 yards in the first half. "I think we just needed a spark. On third downs, we need to take advantage of the guys we have."

Springer called Floyd "an unbelievable player, as well as a great person."

"We picked things up in the second quarter," Springer said. "Mike is always a good one to throw to whenever you are in doubt. He is a great player. Great players make great plays."

Floyd, who has 738 receiving yards in six games, caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Springer and tip-toed just inside the end line during Cretin-Derham Hall's 28-point outburst in the second quarter. Shady Salamon's 1-yard run with 9:49 left broke a scoreless tie and triggered a 21-point scoring spree over a span of 3:51.

Springer completed that spree with a 6-yard touchdown pass to a diving Robbie Lambert. Salamon, who rushed for 76 yards, built the Raiders' intermission lead to 28-0 on a 5-yard run with 40.1 seconds left in the second quarter. On that scoring drive, Floyd caught passes of 34 and 28 yards.

"I thought we played really good defense, but you can't give a talented team like that a 50-yard field to play on like we did in the second quarter," Bears coach Bob Jackson said. "(Cretin-Derham Hall) is tough enough to defend when you are on a 100-yard field. Our kids played their butts off on defense. We just weren't able to generate any offense to drive the ball."

Darius Green had the only touchdown for White Bear Lake (4-2) on a 94-yard run down the right sideline with 8:23 left in the fourth quarter.

Floyd was gushing about his visit to Notre Dame and spoke very highly of Notre Dame and his visit. He also made mention that Notre Dame is only bringing in two wide receivers this year... looks like we're done folks!

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- St. Paul's Cretin-Derham Hall High School has produced plenty of top-notch players in not just football but every sport over the years.

Michael Floyd is the latest and, perhaps, on his way to becoming the greatest.

"He's got it all for a wide receiver," Raiders coach Mike Scanlan said. "He's got the speed. He's a basketball guy. It's a brave statement, but I think he might be the best athlete we've ever had at the school. When you think he can't make a better play than he has, he does."

Just a junior, Floyd had 63 catches for 1,240 yards and 16 touchdowns this season for the Raiders, who were beaten by Class 5A state runner-up Lakeville South by one point in the section championship game. Possessing the kind of speed that has big-time college coaches circling him like vultures in search of a scholarship commitment, Floyd averaged nearly 20 yards per reception this year -- his second as a starter.

For his performance, Floyd was named Player of the Year for Minnesota by The Associated Press, as voted on by a statewide panel of sportswriters and broadcasters who regularly cover high school football. Floyd's quarterback, Joe Springer, also received strong consideration for the honor, along with Eden Prairie linebacker Blake Sorensen.

Joining Floyd, Springer and Sorensen on the AP's all-state team were 24 other players: running backs DeAngelo Brackins (International Falls), Chris Atkins (St. Paul Johnson), and B.J. Otto (Hill-Murray); offensive linemen Trey Davis (Farmington), Ryan Orton (Eden Prairie), Chris Bunders (Osseo), Steve Herold (Sartell), and Ryan Wynn (Maple Grove); tight end Seth Noreen (St. Cloud Apollo); wide receiver Matt Veldman (Becker); defensive linemen Broderick Binns (Cretin-Derham Hall), junior Willie Mobley (Eden Prairie), Anthony Jacobs (Northfield), and Matt Ulrich (Rushford-Peterson); linebackers Bryce McNaul (Eden Prairie), junior Sam Maresh (Champlin Park), and Jake Harmon (Triton); defensive backs Takarai Hill (Minneapolis South), Nick Andreas (Lakeville South), Matt Griswold (Totino-Grace) and junior Cody Hendrickson (Cromwell); punter Andrew Tewes (Mayer Lutheran); kicker Joe Stormont (Stillwater) and junior return specialist Jeremy Randle (DeLaSalle).

Floyd is not just one of the most sought-after receivers in the country. He's simply one of the nation's hottest recruits.

"If you've seen him run in person or on film, it's like he's a thoroughbred," Scanlan said. "He's just got that long, driving stride."

What makes Cretin-Derham Hall's coaches most proud, though, is his character and work ethic. Though he has spots on the basketball and track teams, Floyd is a fixture in the school's weight room.

Floyd was unavailable for an interview Monday night because he was out enjoying his 17th birthday. And with scholarship offers from the University of Minnesota, Iowa and Notre Dame, as well as interest from Ohio State, he has plenty to celebrate.

"It's nice to see something like that happen to such a nice guy," Scanlan said. "I just get the feeling that when my back's turned, he's the same guy."
