LA Daily News - USC freshmen football players not hot on dorms

USC freshmen football players not hot on dorms
BY SCOTT WOLF Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 08/25/2007 11:25:44 PM PDT

USC faced a player revolt this week, but for a change it had nothing to do with transfers.
Several freshmen balked at their campus dorm assignments, unhappy with the new living arrangements for first-year players. In the past, all freshmen stayed at the Cardinal Gardens apartment complex.
But there's been an effort to keep the freshmen on campus and integrated with the rest of the student body. However, that created a separate-but-unequal situation because some freshmen got put into older, cramped dorms while others, including linebacker Chris Galippo, were put into one of the newest facilities.
"A lot of guys were mad because there was no air (conditioning) and the room was small," tailback Marc Tyler said.
After complaining to administrators, Tyler, tailback Joe McKnight, wide receiver Brandon Carswell and defensive end Trey Henderson were among those moved into a better dorm.
"It's a lot more comfortable," Tyler said. "Everybody is happy now."
Because on-campus housing is in high demand, wide receiver Ronald Johnson and linebacker Malcolm Smith were allowed to live at Cardinal Gardens.
The apartments were the center of attention for several player arrests in
recent years and last year USC placed an athletic department official in the complex. That will not be necessary this year with fewer athletes at the apartments.

I'm sure Reggie Bu$h can afford to find them better accomodations.

No wonder why Pete never has and never will make it as a pro coach.

Honestly though, after practice, when you are sweaty, hot and tired, I can see why no a/c would be unbearable.

HA! Thats what you get if you go to USC and your parents aren't millionaires, you get to be moved into the athlete reject dorms. Have fun nursing a hangover with no air movement.

I'm sure they have a multi-million dollar building that includes a nice players' lounge similar to the Gug that has a/c. if they were that desperate, they could hang out there after practice and play video games or something.

i'm sure if it had always been that way, or if some of the upperclassmen lived in dorm without a/c, there would be no problem at all. the problem with putting student-athletes above the rest of the student body to begin with is... where do you stop? these guys see there teammates in very nice residence halls/apartments and want to know why they're not getting that.

I'm sure the need for air conditioning is the same in South Bend as it is in SoCal.

I don't think that's true. It's much more sticky and humid at ND, and you don't get the cool ocean breeze. There's a reason people say that California is paradise.

Maybe if they had chosen a school that wasnt constantly embroiled in gang warfare, tehy'd have better living conditions.

It's the same in NorCal - nice near the coast, hot when you get away from it. But how far inland is SC?

no, I'm sure it's not (although humidity should be factored in), but all the non-special football player freshmen live in those dorms and live. I wonder what the situation is with say the men's soccer team or the swimming team at SC. Honestly, does anyone know?
