USC freshmen football players not hot on dorms

USC faced a player revolt this week, but for a change it had nothing to do with transfers.
Several freshmen balked at their campus dorm assignments, unhappy with the new living arrangements for first-year players. In the past, all freshmen stayed at the Cardinal Gardens apartment complex.
But there's been an effort to keep the freshmen on campus and integrated with the rest of the student body. However, that created a separate-but-unequal situation because some freshmen got put into older, cramped dorms while others, including linebacker Chris Galippo, were put into one of the newest facilities.
"A lot of guys were mad because there was no air (conditioning) and the room was small," tailback Marc Tyler said.
After complaining to administrators, Tyler, tailback Joe McKnight, wide receiver Brandon Carswell and defensive end Trey Henderson were among those moved into a better dorm.
"It's a lot more comfortable," Tyler said. "Everybody is happy now."
Because on-campus housing is in high demand, wide receiver Ronald Johnson and linebacker Malcolm Smith were allowed to live at Cardinal Gardens.
The apartments were the center of attention for several player arrests in
recent years and last year USC placed an athletic department official in the complex. That will not be necessary this year with fewer athletes at the apartments.
