'08 IL LB Steve Filer (Signed LOI to ND)

Based on what I see...

+'s = Hitting with authority, instincts, pass rushing, sideline to sideline ability

???'s = Pass coverage, taking on blockers

-'s = Technique.

Sometimes, it seems like he's swiveling his hips when he's waiting for the play to develop. At the next level, if he's got to turn his hips 180, he's going to be too out of position to make the play. But that's very coachable.

He looks pretty darn good.

I think his awareness is great, but kind of slower to the ball and reaction. I can see him getting tied up by an offensive lineman reading a play too long and missing out on the RB. Great player though.

Filer doesn't seem to have any other unofficial visits planned for this summer though he said he may visit a couple of schools that aren't far away such as Illinois and ND. He says he has about 35 or 36 scholarships at the moment and that he still hasn't narrowed it done yet except for telling only a couple of schools he wasn't interested.

Top high school football prospects visit Champaign - Sports

-------I said a couple of monthes ago that I definently see Filer going to Illinois and got chewed out for it. Well he visited there recently and this to say....

Filer said Friday that he knows Illinois doesn't have the proven winning records of many of the schools he is talking to, but that it knows how to win a recruit's notice.

"You see them getting these top-notch players, these blue-chip players, and it draws attention to them. It kind of makes you do a double-take," Filer said. "There's something different around here. You can see the family environment."

--------I know it's just a visit, but he never says anything like that about ND and I've had this feeling about him for a while. I said it monthes ago and I'll say it again even though it's not the popular choice....I have him going to Illinois.

I sure hope you are the Lebron James of fillers recruiting. A star up until the finals, and then have no clue what is going on. With ND just being the right choice for many many reasons and that is where he goes!

Next time can we make a point without bashing Lebron and/or the Cavs.

Yuck. I sure hope you're wrong, Knight, because for now I feel like I need to :puke:.

-------Hey man I hope I'm wrong, I'm not one of these people that like to say "I told you so", but people should really not write off Illinois because Zook can recruit and he won't stop because we want him too. Everyone can't deny that Filer has never said such things about ND and have had a funny feeling on him, Mike Frank feels the same way and he said that he said the same thing about Benn and G. Little last year.

I made a pledge about 5 pages ago in this thread to no longer comment on Filer's recruitement. Without making a comment about anything posted today, let me just say that this article is from The Daily Illini. IMO, no other comment is required.

I wonder if it reminds him of a family because the "dad" is always passing out money to his kids? :smilewink

Scout.com: Filer Is Looking At All of His Options

-----Article from May 18th, but it says that Weis doesn't really tell him who's committed at LB and how many he'll be taking there because he's told Filer that he'll have a spot no matter what. He'll definently decide after his Sr. year, but it just shows you how high the staff is on him. He sounds like the most confident player ever in all of his articles.

He seems like a really thoughtful young man. If for any reason he doesn't go Irish, I am confident it's because he feels like he fits better elsewhere; I'm not worried about him being Zooked at all.

As Illinois continues to get destroyed by Big 10 teams this season, guys like Filer will realize that winning goes far beyond the 3 blue-chip players on the team.

I honestly don't think Illinois is just going to get run over this year. Now i'm not predicting them in contention for the big 10 or even a winning record, but they do have some talent.

Zook had talent at Florida, look how well he did with it down there.

He can recruit, he just can't coach the talent

Yeah, one week he'd go out and beat someone like Georgia, or Tennessee, and then the next week he'd trun around and loose to Ole Miss, Miss. St., or get crushed in a bowl game by Iowa.

I agree with everything you guys are saying that Illinois won't win many games. But they do have talent, and like at floriday they could suprise a few good teams.

sort of like ND three years ago. They would go out and beat a team like Michigan or Tennessee, and than come out and lose to BYU, Syracuse, etc.. I"m so glad those days are over

Illinois doesn't have much talent at all besides last year's recruiting miracles. Mostly :s::s:

Filer has set a visit date to ND, not sure if it's an official or unofficial. More later...

Apprently he has set a visit to ND for later this month. Call me crazy, but he doesn't strike me as the type to end it on his trip.

Without knowing you well, I'd say your not crazy...at least this time. This kid probably wants to get a feel for what's going on considering all the recent verbals, and the fact that this is historic success this early in recruiting for Notre Dame. He is smart enough and close enough to want to come see what all the hub-bub is. That'd be my guess.

I tend to agree, but I would say that with the recent additions to the D, he might go ahead and commit if it feels right to him. We have added some horses along the defensive front, and in the secondary, so he might decide to pull the trigger, the same can be said for Sabino. He really likes Coach Brown, with whom he talks to quite a bit, so if this year has taught us anything, CB can sell what he needs to to anyone for the most part. I would love to see both of them end up in South Bend.

Go Irish!!!

Yeah, they'll win some games, but he's just recruiting top talent so someone will come and take over since he sucks as a coach. Reminds me of the Boob, only Zook is a better recruiter than Davie.
