It doesn't appear that he had all that much blocking out in front of him on several plays, but he still managed to make a huge play out of it.

Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, ranked No. 1 in Division IV, stopped Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit 20-14. QB Dan McCarthy scored the game-winning touchdown on a 5-yard run. Mark Wooldridge had two TD runs for Walsh, but was stopped by Mooney junior standout Brandon Beachum on a key fourth-and-1 with three minutes left.

I like this kid. He's only a sophmore in these clips thats ridiculous. It looks like he enjoys hitting someone whether he's on offense or defense.

YOUNGSTOWN — Junior quarterback Dan McCarthy threw two touchdown passes to senior Tony Brunetti to lead Cardinal Mooney (2-0) over Buffalo St. Francis, 28-0.

Mooney scored 14 points in the first quarter and seven apiece in the third and fourth periods.

The distances for Brunetti's TD catches were 16 and 33 yards.

Tailback Jamelle Bowers had eight carries for 58 yards for the winners.

Brandon Beachum had a 29-yard touchdown run as did Michael Zordich from 1-yard out. McCarthy completed four of eight passes for 117 yards.

Mark Babyak kicked all four PATs against the Red Raiders, who were playing their opener.

Builds Lead

Michael Zordich's 1-yard run increased the lead to 21-0 at 3:41 of the third after a seven-play 49-yard march.

Just 42 seconds into the fourth, Mooney, struck for a fourth time when McCarthy hit Brunetti from 33 yards out. It followed a four-play, 48-yard drive.

St. Francis' quarterback was Lucas Tasker, son of former Buffalo Bills standout Steve Tasker.

Mooney's first score was Beachum's 29-yard run and Mark Babyak's kick at 9:14. The four-play drive covered 52 yards.

On the second play of the Cards' second possession, quarterback Dan McCarthy and receiver Dan Pederzolli hooked up for a 61-yard pass play. Three plays later, Tony Brunetti caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from McCarthy. Babyak's kick put Mooney up, 14-0, at 4:48 of the first period.

Cards dominated

At halftime, Mooney had a 7-6 edge in first downs and 172 total yards. Mooney 95 ground on 15 carries. Beachum had three carries for 31 yards, Mike Zordich had four attempts for 28 yards. McCarthy completed two of three passes for 77 yards.

In the first half, Mooney held the Red Raiders (0-1) to 57 total yards, 52 of which were on the ground.

Mooney's opening-week victory was a 20-14 win over Walsh Jesuit.

YOUNGSTOWN — When Mooney junior Dan McCarthy was converted from running back to quarterback this summer, he had quite a legacy to live up to.

The last three Cardinal quarterbacks — Ron Stoops (Michigan State), Kyle McCarthy (Notre Dame) and Derrell Johnson (Iowa) — earned Division I scholarships, although all of them were recruited as defensive backs.

On Tuesday, the number grew to four — Dan McCarthy got a letter in the mail from Ohio State coach Jim Tressel offering him a full-ride — but McCarthy hasn't lost his focus.

Self-restraint

"I was very excited about the offer," said McCarthy, who hasn't yet decided on a college. "But I'm just trying to concentrate on this season."

He didn't seem to have any trouble on Friday, running for six touchdowns to lead Mooney (3-0) to a 40-13 win over Akron Hoban at Stambaugh Stadium.

"Did he really have that many [touchdowns]?" Mooney coach P.J. Fecko said. "Honestly, I didn't know that."

What Fecko did know was that losing Johnson to graduation left a big hole for his team at quarterback entering this season. Last year's backup, Tony Brunetti, was better suited at wideout.

McCarthy's athletic ability, meanwhile, was perfectly suited for Mooney's run-first offense, Fecko said.

"Danny's a pretty good athlete," Fecko said. "He's still learning and he's still figuring things out. But at this point, the only thing he's lacking is experience."

Not perfect

McCarthy wasn't perfect — he fumbled a punt return and threw an interception into double coverage in the end zone — but he certainly didn't play like it was his third start at quarterback.

"I'm just taking it week by week," said McCarthy, who said that his brother's decision to play at Notre Dame won't have any effect on his own. "Our line opened up some great holes and our fullbacks got the tough yards. I was just fortunate enough to get outside."

McCarthy finished with 152 yards on 16 carries and completed 3 of 4 passes for 65 yards, including a 42-yarder Vinny Petella.

Junior fullback Mike Zordich, an outstanding linebacker who is also getting interest from Division I schools, added 114 yards on 13 carries as the Cardinals finished with 361 yards on the ground. (Running back Brandon Beachum injured his ankle and did not play the second half, but the injury was not expected to be serious.)

"We're working on putting a full game together," Fecko said. "We've seen glimmers of what we can do."

Mooney took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, only to turn the ball over on three straight possessions in the second quarter, giving Hoban new life.

Knights within eight

The Knights (1-2) pulled to within 21-13 late in the third quarter and stuffed Mooney on its first three plays of the next series. Problem was, a Hoban defender got flagged for a personal foul on third down, giving Mooney a first down.

Five plays later, McCarthy scored his fourth touchdown and Hoban never again threatened.

Hoban senior running back DeAnte Johnson, who was carrying a bigger load due to the injury to running back Steven Yoak, finished with 97 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown.

"We did some things that I think we can build on," said Akron Hoban coach Ralph Orsini, whose team also lost to Walsh Jesuit. "You just can't get in a hole against a team like Cardinal Mooney.

"They're a really tough team," Orsini said. "Anybody who beats them this year is going to have to play awfully well."

WARREN — A bevy of offensive backs and a strong defense led Cardinal Mooney to a 52-14 win over Cleveland Benedictine Friday night.

"We had a lot of different guys touch the ball," Mooney P.J. Fecko said. "That keeps the defense off balance."

Eight backs gained 374 yards on 52 carries for Mooney (6-0). The victory ended a string of five consecutive victories for Benedictine (1-5) over the Cardinals.

Leading Mooney's offensive charge was quarterback Dan McCarthy, who gained 140 yards on 13 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown run. Mooney also scored a touchdown on the only pass McCarthy completed, a 25-yard toss to Ryan Babyak.

Two other keys to Mooney's offensive efforts were running backs Michael Zordich, who gained 90 yards on eight carries, and Brandon Beachum, who gained 84 yards on 13 carries. Zordich scored two touchdowns, on runs of 23 and 33 yards, while Beachum dashed 12 yards into the end zone.

Mooney scored first, marching 72 yards into Benedictine's end zone in the first quarter. The drive was capped by Jamelle Bowers' 3-yard plunge into the end zone, but the extra point kick failed.
Bengals led 7-6

But Benedictine came back quickly, scoring on a 14-play drive that covered 77 yards. Bengals quarterback Najee Goode ended the drive with a 1-yard drive across the goal line. Josh Steigerwald kicked the extra point to give Benedictine a 7-6 lead.

That was the only lead Benedictine would hold all night.

Mooney scored a second touchdown in the first quarter and two more in the second quarter to take a 25-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

"We were fortunate enough to jump out and grab the lead," Fecko said. "And we were fortunate to come up with some stops" of the Benedictine offense.

The rout continues

Mooney took the second-half kickoff and marched 51 yards in seven plays, scoring when Zordich dashed 23 yards into the end zone.

After holding Benedictine without a first down, and sacking Goode, Mooney launched another successful scoring drive, scoring on Babyak's 25-yard catch.

Benedictine found the end zone again in the fourth quarter. The drive was keyed by running back Anthony Urbania's 53-yard jaunt. Urbania also carried the ball into the end zone, scoring on a 1-yard run.

But after Urbania ended his team's long scoring drought, Mooney scored two more fourth-quarter touchdowns. Second-team quarterback Jonathon Zyznar scored on a 4-yard run and the scoring ended when safety Lou Salreno intercepted a Benedictine pass and dashed 37 yards into the end zone.

Leading the Bengals

Urbania, a junior, was the key to the Bengals' offensive efforts, gaining 186 yards on 30 carries. The other offensive bright spot for Benedictine was running back Romel Dismuke, a sophomore who gained 63 yards on six carries.

Despite the big scoring margin, Fecko said after the game, "We're still not where we need to be."

Mooney entered the game in first place in the Division IV, Region 13 OHSAA computer ratings, and seems headed into the playoffs.

While admitting he was proud that his team avoided turnovers Friday night, Fecko insisted, "We've got a number of things we need to work on."

YOUNGSTOWN — Some people wondered just how the Cardinal Mooney High football team would play Friday night, given that the Cardinals had locked up the top seed in their region for the playoffs.

Well, after a 452-yard offensive explosion and a 32-14 blasting of a good Columbus Watterson team at Stambaugh Stadium, there should be no question that Mooney is ready to move into the postseason.

"The playoffs are next week, we weren't going to take it easy or sit anyone," said Mooney coach P.J. Fecko. "These guys have worked too hard all spring and summer to do that."
Mooney finished the regular season with a 9-0 record, the program's first unbeaten regular season since 1996.

Opening half

Both teams came out on their first possession of the game and moved right down the field for a touchdown. Mooney moved 80 yards in 12 plays with the opening kickoff, as Brandon Beachum scored from 6 yards out. The extra point failed.

The Eagles (7-3) countered with a six-play, 63-yard drive as Sam Jacobs tallied on a 9-yard scamper. The extra point by Matt Ring was good to give Watterson a 7-6 lead.

The Cardinals used two big plays to score a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. Quarterback Dan McCarthy scored a a 41-yard run with 7:23 to play in the half, then hit Tony Brunetti with a 45-yard scoring strike with just 36 seconds remaining before halftime to give the Cards an 18-6 advantage.

"We jumped out to a fast start and gained momentum," said Fecko, "and then they swung it back their way before our defense really stepped it up and played well the rest of the game."

Cardinals dominate

In the third quarter the Cardinals again used a time-consuming drive to score. They forced a punt then drove 88 yards in 13 plays, taking 6:13 off the clock, to make it 25-7. The key play in the drive was a fourth-down pass from McCarthy to Mike McGlone that gave Mooney a first down at the Watterson 4. Michael Zordich scored on a 2-yard run and Mark Babyak converted the extra point.

The Cardinals recovered a on the final play of the third quarter and Zordich scored the final Mooney touchdown on a 22-yard run. Jacobs completed the scoring on a 6-yard run.
Mooney dominated the statistics. The Cards had 20 first downs to the Eagles' eight. Watterson had 140 yards on the ground in 27 attempts while Mooney had 381 yards and rushed the ball 61 times. The Cardinals were 4-for-5 passing for 71 yards, while the Eagles hit just 4-for-11 for 35 yards.

Beachum keys attack

Beachum finished with 114 yards on 20 carries, while Jamelle Bowers added 106 yards on 14 attempts. Zordich picked up 70 yards on 14 rushes while McCarthy added 56 more on just nine tries.

Bobby Youkam led the Eagles with 84 yards in 10 carries.

"We were pleased with our performance throwing the ball, but we are a running team," said Fecko. "We were able to control the clock and swing field position in our favor.

"We have a lot of capable people running the ball. A lot of people are looking for us to run the quarterback, but we are able to come at them from a lot of different angles."

OK then, ... not to be too much of a high school homer here, but so is St. X. Their best players, Ashley, Schneider, Craig, are all JRs too.

Have we heard if Charlie plans on going after any of these guys with an offer?

It's early, so a lot of offers are still to come, but those guys are on the radar. I overheard Ashley telling friends he was getting mail from ND when he was a sophomore.

Oh, you can call me a homer if you want, it doesn't change the fact that there are a LOT of "big-time" D-1A players on this Mooney team.

Beachum, McCarthy, Zordich, and about 4 other kids from just that JR class will be at a big D-1 school. That's not being a homer, that's being honest.

And, I don't know about Beachum because I don't know his grade situation (even though he's probably the best athlete in Ohio for next year. Again, not being a homer, Scout had him on their Top 50 and it was mentioned on Irish Eyes Power Hour as well), but McCarthy and Zordich will probably be offered. McCarthy especially because his brother Kyle is currently in our secondary.

Didn't realize Mooney was Div IV, ... does it matter? I'm just thinking about their competition. But if they're legit D-I prospects let's get 'em to ND.

It doesn't matter, any more than Oaks Christian's division. Mooney is legit

Mooney's a lower division, but they have Warren Harding in their conference and they beat them pretty regurarly, and Harding is D-1 and they put a TON of guys into the Big Ten (Clarett, Prescott Burgess, Mario Manningham, Dan Herron.)

Yeah, Mooney's legit. They will probalby be in the Kirk Herbstreit Classic next year and there have been whispers that they'll be matched up against that Hoover Alabama team from the ESPN show. I don't know if they'd beat them, but Hoover would get everything they could ask for from Mooney with the SRs they'll have next year.

Beachum was apparently very impressive at the PSU Nike camp this past weekend, a camp that was very heavily attended by ND coaches. (Corwin Brown, Ron Powlus, Bill Lewis, John Latina and Rob Ianello) All of this has started talk that ND may still have some interest in Beachum, but considering that he is already a Scout 4 star, a Rivals pre-eval 100, and on the ESPN 150, there must be a reason why he has not already received an offer. It may be academics but even that is not clear. Beachum does have offers from schools such as Nebraska, Oklahoma, LSU, PSU, and FSU, but interestingly enough none from the unholy triumvirate including the Bucknuts.

Anybody with any other info as to why Beachum has never appeared on the Irish radar?

Probably because of the other offers too. Beal, Sweat, Sabino, Filer, Hale, A. Brown have all been offered, and all are in the 4-5 star bracket. We may even have an offer out for Futch. Since we bring in 1-2 more LB's max, do we really feel the need at this point to offer Beachum? Its not that Beachum isn't good, but... there are others that are as good if not better, IMO.

I also heard he impressed at RB primarily at that camp. So take that FWIW.

Yes, and apparently Beachum would like to have the opprotunity to play RB in college. Based on what ant80 said, the short answer seems to be the simple one on why OSU & ND have not offered Beachum. Despite the high rankings on all the recruiting boards Weis & Tressel must not have him as highly rated as the guys already offered, and since the Poodle & the Cockwad seems to be only playing follow the leader this year, they have not offered him either. I'm sure if ND ever decided to offer Beachum, that Florida would be right behind us with an offer.

Its a little off topic, but is there any way to track when ND offered a kid, and when UF followed suit?

I know this year that when Goodman and Cave verballed, Urban barked up their respective trees, but thats about it.

I don't know of any recruiting database that keeps track of that info, plus they all differ on who has been actually offered anyway. I guess the only way to do it is to maintain a list on each individual ND offer, but you'd have to start that at the beginning of the recruiting season for it to have any meaning. We do know that Urban has offered at least 35 of the 62 ND offers, and just my failing memory tells me that a solid majority of the Gator offers came after the ND offer. Recruits like Beal, Sweat, McGuffie, and Forst stand out in that regard.

I think it's pretty obvious with Meyer's strategy this year, and his 110+ offers that he is just resting on his NC laurels and not spending a lot of time on evaluations. He is letting the hard working coaching staffs like ND and others do all the work and then just following suit. You can't really blame him for that, because he knows that at least for this year he can easily get away with it.
