Seriously, I know it's hard not to, but there is way too much hand wringing going on about Steve Filer's recruitement, especially when you consider that ND already has three verbal commits from great LB's. IK1023, not sure why you don't like Filer, other than his expressed lack of enthusiasm to the media, but he is one of the best LB prospects in this class, IMO better than Beal and Sweat, and anyone else that ND has not offered, with the possible exception of Jon Major. He is probably not on a level with Arthur Brown, or Shayne Hale, and maybe not quite up to Sabino, but he is certainly at least on the level of Poz and McDonald. The Irish may not get him, but it is not for lack of effort. Filer wants to take his time, and he may end up not having a slot available if he waits too long. It is still early, but if ND get three or four more commits in May, the pressure is going to start to mount on kids like Filer & Floyd to decide whether ND is really the place for them. Que sera, sera.

One other thing, IK1023, I'm not sure why you think Filer is showing so much love to Meechigan. The Sun Times article has already been discredited, and I have seen nothing that indicates that Filer loves Michigan. To the contrary, there is some significant information that indicates that there is no love lost between Lloyd Carr, and Filer's high school head coach. This is significant because Filer is apparently relying more on his Coach than his family for guidance through this process. If Filer had to make a choice today, I still believe he would pick ND, if it is three months down the road, who knows.

According to my connection at MCHS, watch for Wisconsin to become a major player for Filer. Apparently, Filer is a big fan of Bielema.

and according to someone else's connection at MCHS, Filer is all Irish. This is my last post on Filer until he makes a decision, this is getting ridiculous. For a kid who does not seem to say much to anybody, everyone seems to know what he is thinking.

Not doubting what you are saying brownjk, but these MCHS connections are starting to remind me of the Notre Dame Sherman Oaks connections who were telling everyone that Crist was a USC "silent verbal" the minute he was offered by the Poodle, and who also swore up to an hour before his actual announcement that was definitely going to be a Trojan. Until I hear it out of Steve Filer's mouth, I won't believe what any of the "connections" say about where he is heading.

Ok, I will never discuss my connection at MCHS ever again. I find it funny that whenever someone brings something up that's at all negative; people get up in arms. Last time I checked this is a message board and I am just letting other fellow ND fans know that he is starting to look at Wisconsin. This is the same connection that told me Filer was all Irish this past fall. He has now started to look around and is definitely not a lock for ND. I got this same reaction when I said that Cwynar said that Fleming was going to verbal to ND. Look what happened, Fleming verballed. Unreal, maybe I should change my name to Envied One, so, if I ever say that I have heard something, people will say thanks instead of giving me grief. I am sorry but some of you guys need to take a step down off of your throne. Believe or not, there are other people on here that have connections as well.

I personally like to hear everyone's perspective and all the different information and connections each person can provide makes everyone that much more knowledgeable. More information never hurt anyone, it's getting blindsided that hurts the most.

I, for one, greatly appreciate your input. Keep it coming.

Keep up the good work brownkj002, don't let them get you down. I for one like reading posts from people like you who have connections with some of the players Our Lady is looking at.

Agreed. I understand that a lot of guys have inside sources that don't pan out, but you should treat each guy as an individual case, rather than say, "Well THIS guy was wrong, so you must be full of crap too."

As for Filer, IMO its Michigan, Notre Dame, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa that would make up his rough top 5, no particular order. Again, IMO. OSU isn't going after him hard, and they won't have a spot for him soon enough. Therefore, the rest of the closer Big 10 schools are in the hunt, along with ND. And NU nor IU count, because... well, unless your name is Randle El, your football career is going to die there 95 times out of 100.

I think this thing is going to take some time to play out, but I really think that ND will need to hustle for this verbal, because they don't stand terrifically well with this kid. Posluszny committed to the position that they've thus far recruited Filer for, so he's probably a little more gunshy than when looking at, say, Michigan's class thus far. I almost wonder if he's becoming a 2nd tier guy, behind a Sabino on their priority list, but then I look at when they offered him, and tell myself that he's still the top LB left on the board. Yet I still have to wonder...

Wow. Touchy, aren't you? Nobody "gave you grief." All he said was he was basically taking inside information with a grain of salt. Can you blame him? He didn't call your mother a whore or kick your dog or anything. Post the info if you want. If a few take a wait and see approach, so what? "Insiders" pop up left and right. Your info may be legit, but consider that it's tough to take it as gospel without proof. No big deal really.

Amen, Scoop. I'd been sitting around trying to find a way to say the same thing.

i think the best way to think about Filer right now is that even Filer at this point has no idea who the front runner is.

Its only May, he is going to take the process slow. No point in getting all caught up in the rumors, the internet articles and trying to analyze his every word.

I believe that its going to be a Michigan vs ND battle for him, maybe osu as a third option. Filer I believe has said he would like to have a top 10 by the end of May, but I think its going to be a ND/Skunkbear battle in the end. He's no longer a lock and after last year, that word is no longer in my vocabulary when it comes to recruiting anymore.

Lets just take it easy on ripping into each other on this stuff. We have a long summer ahead of us, with summer camps in there and September 1st is 120 days away, lets just take it easy on each other.

Don't know if this was posted yet, but this is from March....

MARCH 8, 2007. PREP STAR
STEVE FILER, Linebacker from Chicago (Mt. Carmel), Illinois has several offers from schools such as Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota, Virginia, Illinois, Stanford, California and others.

"Notre Dame is recruiting me the hardest." said Filer, "They text message me every day. I like Notre Dame because it's close to home and they have great academics."

"I was at Notre Dame's junior day's last week-end." he said, "I like coach Weis, I met him once before."

"Nebraska sends me letters once in awhile." said Filer, "They want me to come up for a spring practice, I probably won't because it's too far away. I'm not sure if I will visit them on an official visit either."

"Michigan is pretty cool." he said, "I haven't talked to their staff yet, but they want me to attend a spring practice."

"I like Dick Tressel (Ohio State)." he said, He writes to me every other day. He's a cool guy."

"Ohio State wants me to attend one of their spring practices too. I also have family that lives in Ohio."

When asked if Filer wanted to stay in the Big 10 area.

"Not really." said Filer, "I just want to give it some time and see what other offers I get. I don't have any favorites right now. I will narrow it down later, and would like to take all five visits. Academically, I'm looking for a good mechanical engeering school."

Jim's brother, and a position coach at OSU

You forgot the most important role...he is the lead bag man for big brother. I am fairly certain when recruiting "irregularities" at Youngstown State and tOSU have come up, Dick is generally right in the thick of things.

Now that you mention it, didn't he help secure MoClarrett's car that he was "borrowing" that had 10,000 worth of stuff stolen

His brother may recruit morons, and use money as bait, but hey! Jim Tressel wears a tie on the sidelines, now that shows class. :awesomewo

I really don't think Filer is headed for OSU. Hate to be a broken record, but I really think there's nothing to that story. Filer likes them, but OSU doesn't like him as much, and IMO is stringing him along so they can buy time.

They've already snared 1 LB in Nathan Williams (trust me, I watched the video on his verbal and he says they're treating him like Bobby Carpenter, who was definitely a LB), and they're limited in the # of LB's they can take in. Considering where they stand with guys like Beal, Hale, and Sweat, I think Filer is quite a ways down the list. Somebody will recruit Filer hard enough to get his verbal, before OSU works their way down the list to him, or they get another verbal and finish up before Filer decides.

Sounds like Filer's spot is going to held for him.

To me, Michigan seems like more of a threat than Ohio State.

Williams is a DE who may be used in coverage like Gholston was last year. Not the other way around like Bobby C. But most of what else you said are correct. OSU's order of preference for LBs are Sweat, Hale (both are high on OSU), Beal, Sabino, Filer and Wilson. IMO.
