So what are the concerns that would justify a thorough anal cleansing? I've heard lots of good things, if you can stand the heat.
Heat
Humidity
Traffic
Sprawl
Food
Hurricanes
Rain
I lived in Houston based company for about 10 years living there for a year in '86.
You get some hot days in Chitown. I get them in Alabama. But not like Houston. Figure 100 bad days a years - hot, very hot, sticky hot.
You'll need heat for your house for a couple of weeks a year. But if a cold spell does come and stays below freezing, you won't be able to find a plumber. Somewhere between '86 and '92 there was a severe freeze. I was out of town for it with our Southern Regional Mgr. We saw the reports on CNN. He called home. His wife told him, the plumber said, "Every pipeline in the house is broken and has to be replaced." (Seems in Houston they run pipes in outside walls on the exterior of the insulation.) The estimate was outrageous but the kicker was the plumber said the job could take months as there was a run on plumbing supplies in Houston. My smart Reg Mgr gets the plumber on the phone. We can buy the supplies in GA (local HQ/Home Depot etc) and fly them in that night. After some horse trading he ends up with a free plumbing job (labor and materials) and his house gets done first. My Reg Mgr offered to drive a rental truck to Houston filled with plumbing supplies. Some 20 hours later his house was be replumbed - the right way!
When I first moved (under duress) to Houston I called a classmate who had lived there for 10 years. He suggested dinner. I said, "How about tonight? I'm about 10-15 miles away." "Not on a weeknight. It'd take you 2 hours to get here." I worked by the Hardy Toll Road by the North Beltway not far from Houston Intercontinental Airport and lived in Kingwood (Northeast Houston). He was over by the Galleria (southwest Houston). Houston has the 4th largest population in USA. It's the size of Los Angeles but without LAs freeway system. My friend's company starts work at 6:00 to help alleviate traffic congestion. (Oh his wife and kids have spent every summer in NJ to beat the heat.
Food - if you like TexMex you're in hog heaven. There are some very fine upscale restaruants in Houston most of them are in the Galleria area. Great French food or frioles with not a lot in between. I never did find decent Italian.
Houston is flat. I use to get homesick for hills and ride up on an overpass to get dizzy from height. Either that or the parking deck at the airport. All that flatness means that when it rains there isn't any place for the water to go. Houston was founded on Buffalo Bayou. Most of the creeks, rivers, and stormdrains backup up. Check for FLOOD INSURANCE and water Damage when house hunting. DON'T TAKE ANYBODY'S WORD.
Hurricane - Think about evacuating 4 million people to high ground when there isn't any. On a road network that snarls in good weather rushhour. The did have a real scare about a two years ago. But since it missed, most people aren't going to believe the NWS warnings next time.
The City has ballet/opera and the arts. It also has the most diversity of any city in the USA. Good if you like melting pot culture. Can you speak more than one language? Add that to the traffic problem.
Oh I forget. Essentially NO mass transit. Everybody drives.
Housing - NO Zoning. Texans are proud of that. You can by a million dollar home and somebody can put up a massage parlor or a refinery next store to you. So people with $$$ live in planned communities where you have to support the color scheme to paint your house to a neighborhood commission. "No, there are already too many houses in the area with your first and second color choices. What's your third choice?"
Did I mention heat? Lots of golf courses and tennis courts but I didn't see many people using them. Drove to work at 6:30am and a neighbor was out watering his lawn. Drove home and 6:30 pm and the same guy was out watering his lawn. Hey it was 12 hours since he last watered. He didn't want the grass to die from the heat. The soil is very sandy. If there's no rain it doesn't hold water. If it has rained you might need a boat.
Politics - Well after Chicago it might not be so bad. While I lived there the State Legislature passed a Seat Belt Law. Very controversial. It finally passed on with a compromise rider allowing one to drive with an open container of beer. No kidding.
I've been to 47 states on business. I made my anatomy comment based on national exposure.
Hope you love C&W music. Get a pair of cowboy boots, and a big buckle and learn to two step.
