I just don't think you can use Gallup as a good example because he is not really big enough to play running back at the college level.

Barry can play RB at this level, and im not even using my bias here. He's a solid 180 lb...he may be an inch shorter than 5"11, but he can be used as a threat to other teams. If CW doesn't use him as KR this year i dont know what CW's thinking...sure weve got Tate, West, Prince...but you've gotta give them a chance first before you can judge them like that.

I don't think 180 lbs. is big enough to play RB at the college level, do I think he should be used as a WR and a return guy? Hell yeah, I'm not saying that he doesn't have speed or the ability to stretch the field out of the as a wideout, Just from what I saw he has more of the small receivers type body then as a viable every down back. Look at Prince last year, he was probably the fastest of all the RB's last year but he got little playing time because he didn't seem physical enough to to take the pounding, or block a blitz. Gallup actually reminds me of Joey Getherall.

Can't break tackles? well, I guess not when your out running the guy that as the angle on you and barely touches you. I don't care what people say from what I have seen if he commits to ND he will be electric, and I would love to have him. And why do we have to refer to him as a white Reggie Bush? Why is everything about race on here....just kidding LOL

Here's my take, I don't care if he's black, white, green, orange whatever he looks like a player. In my opinion if you have the ability to play ball and make people look that bad in Texas HS football you have the ability to play anywhere. I was just looking at Armando Allen highlights on YouTube and I think they compare favorably to each other. It would be sick to have AA and McGuffie on the field at the same time. no matter what we have on offense we still need playmakers and thats exactly what this guy looks like.

Maybe 180 isn't enough but McGuffie's 191 and still a HS Junior. He may not grow anymore but it's likely he will. Regardless, Julius Jones and Darius Walker were the same height and weight when they started playing at ND. Two of the top rushers in ND history. Not in Rockne's Era but this millenium. McGuffie has the extra gear that Darius didn't and his Bench as a Junior in HS is similar to Julius as an ND upperclassman.

As far as breaking tackles watch his video against Katy. He gets hit, breaks a tackle, get hits again and breaks the tackle while running backwards for a couple of yards breaking more tackles and THEN outrunning the defenders to the endzone. He runs outside, he runs inside, he cutbacks, and he takes advantage of his blockers.

where ever he goes I bet the coach will have him tone down the leap frog . He may get away with it once or twice but he could get killed doing that

I posted a similar comment after first seeing that video. Exciting but dangerous play.

Wasn't it Hoskins who tried leaping a defender on a kickoff two seasons ago?

Hey um, do you ever actually pay attention to who I am talking about? I was refering to Barry Gallup not Sam McGuffie, I have stated before that I think McGuffie already has the size to play RB in college. He looks to me very similar to Armando Allen. I was discussing whether Gallup had the size to play RB in college with gallup21. If you go back further in the thread you will see that I already made the same statement as you did about McGuffie weighing 190+ and still only a Jr.

Its no that at all, its just that in every thread I post in BGIF continually misqoutes me or misreads most of my previous posts, it just gets old after awhile. your comment is pretty funny though.

Here are the latest quotes attributed to Sam McGuffie from a ChicagoSports.com article posted today.

"During the season, I went off on people. I kind of expected it but I had to go out and do it. Athletically, you're probably not going to find someone my age who can go out and do what I can do, but I don't want to sound cocky."

"After I started putting on some extra weight and running some pretty hellacious forties and going to combines and dominating and doing my 40 and scaring people, I knew I could do this,"

"When we played Lamar, they called me Superman in the paper, so when they tackled me they would say 'What's up Superman? You're going to try to jump over me?' We ended up wining (29-7). I had 40 carries and killed them. After the game we're shaking hands and they were saying that I was the truth."

Wow, all I can say is it appears that the mouth of Sam McGuffie has now caught up with the legend. Not quite a Brady Quinn type personality is he? Somehow, I just can't see Sam on the same sideline with Charlie Weis.

Do we really need any RBs in that class? I kinda wonder...we are going to have quite a few that are game breakers at this point. Tate might play elsewhere, but we look good from this perspective.

James Aldridge #34
Munir Prince #25
Armando Allen #5
Robert Hughes
Golden Tate

Maybe just 1 more?

Having six zillion running backs doesn't seem to be worrying Pete Carroll. Why should it worry Charlie Weis?

I think that CW would like the confidence, but might ask him to tone it down a little. I get your concern, but at least he isn't talking in the 3rd person (like the master):

"The football's like a one-man cold to Clifford Franklin. Clifford Franklin's the only man catchin' it, Clifford Franklin's the only man comin' down wid it."

Don't forget all of the criticism thrown Jimmy C's way over his announcement; Coach was cool with it......

McGuffie is cocky, not confident, there is a difference. I really do think he's going to get lit up someday and not know what to do with himself.

If ND stop recruiting 'cocky' High School players, their recruiting pool will be pretty shallow. I guy named Tom Brady played for Coach Weis, and was a pretty cocky sob himself. I think Coach can handle a HS senior. IMO

CW has had phenomenal success with developing QBs, not so well known for his work with developing RBs, but there's always time to change that!

Do we really have a chance with this guy he seems like a texas kid

ND23- Texas has not and most likely will not offer McGuffie. They have shown no interest whatsoever in him, if you would like to know why, read post #61 in this thread.

Rumblings of an imminent committment to Michigan by the end of the week. He apparently enjoyed his visit to AA and will end his recruitment soon. Not a loss at all because we are not in need of an RB and the lack of interest from both sides was known from long ago.

The guy is an athletic freak - I'll make no bones about it. That said, worse things in life than missing on a kid that hasn't been on our radar for months.
