of three teens who used the word "vagina" during a reading of an excert from the "Vagina Monologues". in school. Part of what was quoted: "My short skirt is a liberation flag in the women's army, I declare these streets, any streets, my vagina's country". (Insert Howard Deans' screech after quote) The actual author of "Vagina Monologues" said that lifting the three day suspension helped show the girl's intelligence, grace, and dignity.

Is it just me, or does anyone else see ANYTHING wrong with the ENTIRE situation???

They definitely should not have suspended them. I don't know why they were reading the Vagina Monologues...was it class? Lunch? A play?

I actually went to see them 2 months ago. Not having a vagina, I was unimpressed...but I know a lot of people like it. It's not really what I expected. It had a lot less shock value than I thought.

It was a reading sponsored by a magazine at the high school. They were told in advance not to use the word "fagina", as it was open to the public and kids would be present. HELLOO!!!

The New York Civil Liberties Union was shocked at the initial suspension because the quotes were taken from a "renowned literary work".

People do forget that schools are not really "free" places. They are institutional learning facilities. [movie reference alert!!! can you guess it?]

Ummm...it is. At least as far as modern literature/plays go it is...

Damn, i'm normally good at movie trivia and quotes!! Breakfast club???

Freedom of speech is a great way of saying we can let our kids be corrupted. I don't care what adults do and say (within reason), but kids don't need to be sexualized at school. Where do educators and the "elite" get off deciding what is best for my kid when it doesn't apply to the 3 R's. Stick to the basics, people, it is where drastic attention is needed!!

I'm a big believer in that one can justify anything. Playboy articles are a renowned literary work, still doesn't belong at school. Of course, if it was a book about creationism, I don't think the good old NYCLU would be interested in free speech.

Not only would they...they have...

How about this one?

ACLU of New Jersey Joins Lawsuit Supporting Second-Grader's Right to Sing "Awesome God" at Talent Show

NEWARK, NJ -- The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey today announced that it is seeking to participate as a friend-of-the-court in the case of a second-grade student who was barred from singing a religious song in a voluntary, after-school talent show.

"There is a distinction between speech by a school and speech by individual students," said ACLU of New Jersey cooperating attorney Jennifer Klear of Drinker, Biddle & Reath in New York City. "The Constitution protects a student's individual right to express herself, including the right to express herself religiously."

OR this one...

After ACLU Intervention on Behalf of Christian Valedictorian, Michigan High School Agrees to Stop Censoring Religious Yearbook Entries

DETROIT - The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan today announced an out-of-court settlement between the Utica Community School District and a local student over the censorship of her 2001 yearbook entry. The student's entry had been deleted from the yearbook because it contained a passage from the Bible.

"While it is true that the Constitution forbids public schools to promote religion, schools must be careful not to suppress the private religious expression of students," said ACLU of Michigan Legal Director Michael J. Steinberg, who represented the student. "In this case, a high school purported to create an open forum for student expression, yet censored a student's speech because it was religious in nature."

Sorry, not impressed.

They are upholding the "private expression of students" above the age old agenda of separation of religion and state. That should tell you something right there!

BTW- what the hell is the private expression of students, and how can one possibly define/limit it? Sounds like a bunch of B.S. to me, and the true intention for all the above is never going to be clearly stated by the ACLU

In fact, it probably has more to do with the thread topic, than it does protecting religious beliefs. Of that, I am confident. The ACLU has rarely, in recent years, done anything worthy of having America in its name.

This just in Bush walked on top of the water to retrieve his hat which blew off while he was fishing...

Press Reports indicate BUSH CAN'T SWIM.

Conservatives hate the ACLU until they defend them...lol Then they become best buds. And when they do defend conservatives...they get discredited for having some other agenda.

Classic.

The ACLU defends Civil Liberties...which drives the Right nuts since they like the rights THEY like...not the ones we are all entitled to. Just like Leftists who believe the Right to Bear arms is negated somehow...

That is so false. I depise the ACLU because they don't stand for what most Americans stand for. The ONLY agenda they have is to promote individual "rights" so that they can continue aborting babies, and promote sexual abuse of kids. If you actually believe any true conservative wants them to "defend" them, you are on cloud 9.

They promote cvil rights...period. I know that bothers most people, since a majority of Americans think the Bill of Rights is too liberal, but that's life...our Constitution is that way. And they have never defended the right to sexually abuse kids.

Oh sure they do. They defend sexual abusers all the time. It is not a holier than thou organization, their agenda goes far beyond civil rights. It is civil rights according to how they view the world. They make me sick! I equate them to the NAACP, they support black people to advance...as long as they are liberal. How hypocritical is that?? Methinks they should add a consonent to their title.

They defend Marxism/Communism....they want the State to have full control over everything, in the hopes that they'll be handed the power as well. They truly hate individual expression, and only take these cases for the good PR it helps in engender with fools like you.

Exactly, the men loving young boys group. Sounds like they really care about "protecting our freedom'. Why do you think liberals so zealously guard the whole freedom of privacy. It is a sick, wacked out bunch of lawyers, not in tune with middle America.

There's a huge difference there. On the one hand, you're preventing the reading of literature, on the other, you're preventing the teaching of baseless theories.

There's restricting free speech in reference to academia and artistic learning, such as the Vagina Monologues, versus restricting what can be taught in school.

I don't think anyone can deny that there's a huuuuuge difference between creationism and science. One belongs in a church, the other belongs in a classroom.

Creationism is a useless theory? Leave it to the left to state that professors/teachers should have academic freedom to profess America is evil (for scholarly reasons), while restricting any and all references to a belief followed by a great portion of America and the world. You don't have to say it is fact, what should be mentioned is that there are two competing theories for mankind. That would seem not only fair, but accurate. Who is anyone to say that God does NOT exist, nor that creationism didn't exist.
It's OK if muslim information is allowed in classrooms, but not Christian? Many schools apparantly think so, I hear about that on the radio. It sounds more like separation of Christian religion from society. While studying other world religions is acceptable practice.

The ACLU only takes these cases too fool, you liberal tools into thinking that they are not as evil as they truly are....obviously, you cant see that.

feel free to post some evidence...these two cases were only 2 of over 50 that I found in looking about 2 minutes on Google.

They Defend Rush Limbaugh too...but I forgive them anyhow.

They in no way push for the State to control things...that is PRECISELY what they don't want.

You can teach creationism, just as you may teach Islam.

You may not teach Creationism as science.

Hate speech is annoying...but it is not harmful...it merely helps one to identify their enemies. Those who would limit it limit liberty. - me
