B. Take a look at what he told the LSU satellite of Scout.com. Apparently he is retracting what he told Steve Hare over at Irish Illustrated/Rivals.:

“This guy writing about Notre Dame called and I don’t know where he got his stuff from,” Davis told Tiger Rag. “He said that I said all kind of stuff about Notre Dame being my top school and making it sound like I was totally ragging on LSU.

“I called him back today and asked him about it and he was like don’t worry about it nobody is going to read that story anyway. I told him he shouldn’t have done that and now I will not be talking to that guy anymore.”

“To say that I would commit to Notre Dame if coach (Charlie) Weis called me is just not true,” he said. “Notre Dame is nine hours away from home and I don’t want to go more than five hours away from home.

“I mean I live in Louisiana and it goes without saying that I’m a big LSU fan. I was badly misquoted and there is not anything I could ever say bad about LSU.

This is interesting. Luther Davis is claiming that he was misquoted. Did Steve Hare make the story up? Why would he do that?

Two different sites, two conflicting stories, one player. Maybe they tape record these interviews?

Whatever chance we had with this kid, are probably shot in the ass because of the apparent misquote. Chuck can't be too impressed with this writer.

Supposedly, on the Scout site, Luther Davis stated he wouldn't speak to Steve ever again, yet he contacted him hours later for a copy of the article according to Steve on the Four Horsemen Lounge on Rivals.

Nonetheless, who knows where the issue stems from. Maybe Steve misquoted or Luther decided to backtrack, but I would imagine Luther won't be committing to ND anytime soon.

There are rumors going around Davis doesn't have an offer from ND at all.

I don't think Steve Hare would be irresponsible and fabricate a story. I just can't see a journalist doing that. I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt because he's the adult. My guess is Luther Davis might be backpeddaling now because when the article came out, LSU, FSU and Ole Miss all called and texted, jumping all over him.

It will sort itself out. And it keeps people subscribed and interested either way.

Jason Sapp at BGI took a lot of heat for the Jason Kates situation.

Sounds like Steve Hare might be facing the same kind of tune.

It will sort itself out, whatever actually happened. Again, I'm going with the adult and the professional on this one, but you never know....

I think Luther might have been using Notre Dame to try to ramp up offers from other schools by making it seem as though he would commit to ND with a phone call, then when he got the attention he wanted, he backtracked and played off the comments as a misquote. Don't want to doubt him or the writer, but it looks like ND is pretty much screwed either way with this guy now.

Meh...i'm with jiggs. I'd bet my 401k that this 16/17 year old kid - not truly understanding what it means to be 'on the record' - had a candid conversation with a guy that sounded sincere on the other end of the phone. When the details of his conversation went public, he reacted like every other kid would - denying it was said.

Although I'm sure it happens with some, most reporters aren't going to stick their necks out and flat out lie about something that could destroy their credibility with their sole source of work - recruits. Instead, he probably gave the kid too much credit in understanding what kinds of comments he should and shouldn't make to a reporter.
