Brendan took a visit to ND on Jan 27th, and he reports a 4.3 GPA. (I don't know how that's even possible, but ok.)

Some schools do it out of a 5.0 scale. I think Chris Stewart had a 4.9 out of 5 for example. The more common way is with AP classes. They count an A as 5 points, an B as 4 and so on.

Per Scout, we've offered him. The teaser has CW telling him "You're the one that we want" ... he's got LOTS of solid offers, and looks to be a smart kid. Here's hoping we can land him.

ND is and will be in his final two. I think that ND will land Beal.

Some schools also weigh honors classes with more points, so you could have a 4.3 on a 4.0 scale.

Yea, I'm from Jersey, and that's what it was like at my high school -- honors classes were bumped up by a grade point. In any case, he looks like a damn smart kid and a good player; I'll be really excited if we land him.

Beals comments about ND paraphrased:
1) The offer that he has wanted for a long time.
2) ND has everything that he is looking for in a school.
3) An Ivy League type education with the added benefit of being one of the top football programs in the country.
4) ND has great tradition and integrity.
5) ND will be one of his top schools when it comes to decision time.

One potential issue with Beal is that he is a big time BC legacy kid, Mom, Dad, Aunts & Uncles. On the flip side I was once told by an ND admissions guy that 8 out of 9 kids who list ND & BC as their final college choices end up picking ND. I wonder if the 9th kid is always a BC legacy, hope not.

Well Gallup came to ND and I think his old man works for BC.

I believe his top three right now are BC and ND with tOSU trailing both. This is just my opinion based off of comments I have read.

Even with out the tradition, scholastic quality, and all the other intangibles that ND has to offer, anyone who has been to both campuses can see why ND usually wins out. BC packs the same number of students as ND into a campus that is maybe 1/3 the size. That alone is a big selling point for High School seniors. It seems as though if Beal can get past the legacy issues, that ND would definitely have a great shot at him. However, legacy is a big deal with the BC parents, and BC as a whole is even more of a legacy school than ND, they are just not as up front about it as Notre Dame is.

Yeah...coming from the Boston area, BC doesn't have the same feel to campus that ND does.

But, on the flip side, I think Jagodzinski was the right hire there, and if BC has a good season this year (they basically return everybody), we could have some battles recruiting-wise with them. They'll never be able to tap heavily nationally as we do, but they will compete with some of the NJ/PA/NY kids we both offer.

Beal to CW: " Notre Dame was the one (offer) I was waiting for."
CW: "You got it"
Beal: "I was shaking at that point, I was on top of the world."

This is why I dislike Boston College as much as USC.

On a BC recruiting site, they talk about Brendan Beal being a BC legacy kid, and then mention the stiff competition they will have in recruiting Beal from schools like OSU, USC, & ND.

Here is the best part though. The guy who writes the article goes on to say that BC is more likely to face tougher competition on Beal from elite academic schools like Yale, Brown, Duke, and Northwestern because for Beal academics come first, the inference being that on an academic basis those are the schools that would compete with BC for Beal. BC people are so delusional when it comes to Notre Dame that some of them actually believe what they say. What a joke! Beal is by all accounts a really smart kid who is looking for the best combination of academics & football, which is exactly why Notre Dame has a really good shot at recruiting him despite the BC legacy factor, because ND is the unquestioned #1 school in that category by any rational person’s standards.

BTW, in the same story Beal stated that he was a little miffed at BC for taking so long to give him an offer.

When the 6-3 1/2, 235-pound Beal first began thinking about what college he'd attend, he considered Ivy League schools such as Princeton, Harvard, Yale and Penn. But then he realized that colleges more known for their football might pride themselves in academics as well.

"The Notre Dame business school is tops in the country and Virginia is No. 2," said Beal, who has a 4.3 grade-point average and would like to work in the finance world. "They could make my dream of going to the pros possible. The academic part is huge because not everyone makes it to the pros."

Great post. From his own mouth Beal completely contradicts what the BC recruiting site wrote about him in the article I posted right before yours. Beal is a really intelligent kid, and UVA is a great academic school, and even BC has some academic merit, but if Brendan logically selects his college based on the best combination of academics and football, then Notre Dame wins hands down, there really is no competition right now. The only problem that still remains is that nasty little legacy issue.

When its all said and done I believe he will end up with 5 stars just from his high school production, his measurables, and his offers list.

Statistics Tck Sck Int
2005 (So.) 121 6 1
2006 (Jr.) 151 11 2

Just look at those stats! He was dominating when he was just a sophomore! And the level of competition is definitely not in question, his school plays in the Iron Hills division which is a very tough division.

Measurables
Ht: 6-foot-3.5
Wt: 235 lbs
Forty: 4.55 secs
Bench max: 350 pounds
Squat max: 475 pounds
Vertical: 33 inches

He is perfect for a 3-4 LB, hes big, fast, and extremely strong.

List of schools that have offered
-Notre Dame
-Ohio State
-Florida
-Michigan
-Wisconsin
-Iowa
-Nebraska
-Pittsburgh
-Rutgers
-Boston College
-Georgia Tech
-Maryland
-North Carolina State
-Wake Forest

Those are only a few schools that have offered him, Miami and USC are also expected to offer soon. He is also being recruited by several Ivy league schools such as Harvard and Yale so he obviously got intelligence. I know some wanted to offer Jon Major but after watching Major's video and watching Beal play live I can say that Beal is the better player.

5 star or not, Beal IMO is right with McDonald & Poz, and right behind Filer in terms of a guy that the Irish have a real solid chance of getting, and who has the potential to be an absolutely great LB in the 3-4. Michigan has also now offered him so the competition continues to grow.

It sounds a little like you don't think much of BC as a school. I'm sure you know it is one of the best schools in the country. I agree that ND beats it in terms of Football team and tradition (obviously). but as far as academics go, they are basically identical.
