From what I understand he is. That didn't come out until really late in the recruiting game but was stated as a factor of why he choose OK.

I don't think he is ....yet.

The story was that he found out close to Signing Day that he found out he will be by the time the season and school started.

ND was in extremely good standing until McCoy found this out and his situation changed dramatically because of this. If Notre Dame didn't have him, they were pretty darn close to reeling him in.

Gary Gray and his coach have agreed to chat with BGI's Ryan O'Leary after his announcement on Thursday night.

Sounds good to me....

Not sure.

Ryan O'Leary's comment as it appears on the BGI board:

Gary will be announcing at Richland Northeast at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, according to his coach, Jay Frye.

I've arranged to speak with both Frye and Gray shortly thereafter...look for a full recap of the announcement later that evening.

i'm thinking he set up his interview with hopes that if gray does pick ND he'll get the first interview of gary gray.

i'm thinking he set up the interview because he KNOWS he'll be getting the first interview of the next ND 2007 verbal.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet or not, but he is going to be at the Blue and Gold game in April.

i dont think he wouldve agreed to do the interview immediately following if he was committing elsewhere. that would be really awkward and tactless.

looks like a great pickup to me

I have seen this justification a number of times, but to be honest, it really doesn't hold water. Trips are easily cancelled, especially since he scheduled the trip before choosing his announcement date. Who knows, he might have already cancelled.

I am not saying that I am not optimistic in getting Gray's verbal; I am just saying that this argument has no real value.

Gary Gray's coach is very good friends with Charlie Weis....they worked at South Carolina together back in the 1980's. The coach has been pushing Notre Dame and Weis pretty hard to Gray.

Gray continues to reiterate he'll be at the B and G Game, he and his coach are doing an interview with BGI immediately following his announcement and Gray's HS coach has a friendship with Weis.

Jiggs, if we can ever be optomistic in the recruiting game I think we can give this one a "thumbs up". It is hard for me to believe he is going to verbal to someone else and continue to say he is coming to the BG game. That makes no sense to me. Not to say it's not possible but unreasonable.

Having said that, nothing is a given with an 18 year old in the recruiting process, How many times were we fooled last year? More than I would like to remember!

BigDon, the big disappointment last year was Gerald McCoy. I'd also group Butch Lewis, Taylor Mays, Steve Brown, Kai Forbath, Micah Johnson, Jamie Cumbie and Aaron Brown into that list. Most of these guys were ones that ND lost early anyway.

But I see what you're saying here.

I think this looks like a strong case in ND's favor. Bill Lewis and Weis are telling McNeil and Walls they are the number 3 and 4 corners. Lewis is telling Gray he'd be in the mix if he were coming in THIS fall. True or not, they're selling these kids on getting in there.

it's just a matter of reading between the lines. if he and his coach are giving an interview to BGI right after the announcement, i'll guarantee that the interviewer has gotten some pretty solid assurances that he's Irish. In these sorts of situations, it's the winners that get the exclusive interview, not the losers. Who wants to interview a recruit right after he announces his intention to play for an ND rival? What recruit wants to line up a reporter for a fan publication to tell him why he likes [insert college choice here] better than ND? How many BGI exclusive interviews do you see that give you the scoop about why a kid DIDN'T choose ND? Not many, because it's a non-story.

When recruits pass on ND, they don't get featured. They become an afterthought, and although mentioned in terms of recruiting successes and failures, don't get much press from the Irish publications.

Is it a guarantee? Nope. But from the sounds of it, this kid is Irish.

Remember, Sam Young scheduled a chat with BGI right after his announcement.

Weis and Gray's coach speak FREQUENTLY.

I think what might ulimately sway Gray to ND will be Lewis' comments to him about his opportunity to come in and be in the mix.

Everything said here points to ND. After last year I'm a little bit "gun shy" but I'll go it one more time and say he's IRISH.

Last year I said without any hesitation that Young AND McCoy were DEFINITELY IRISH! Well, I was half right anyway. If I'm wrong one this one another kick in the ass won't make any difference.

GUN SHY?!?!?! After last year!!! Either you didn't follow recruiting during the Ty Era or you are very quick to move on. I mean, it is great that you don't have as low of expectations as me, but I definitely left room to lose a few guys last year in my head, and if you look at the list from the beginning of last year's recruiting to the end...We got almost everything we wanted. Under Ty, you were crossing your fingers to get two or three awesome guys, so I have to say that my expectations were so low that, even with our losses, I wouldn't say that I am ever gun shy. Booker and Bush ripped out my heart!!!

And Jiggs...When you put the B&G game in the context of Gray's reiterations of attendance, the justification for Gray going Irish becomes much more solid.

This guy is obviously ours...Even if you just look at it in this light mixed with what we have seen above: Is South Carolina going to be in the running for a Natl Championship in the SEC? Big Maybe.

Supposedly he was seen wearing a Notre Dame shirt recently... which means absolutely nothing.

On the positive side, it could mean he's headed to ND.
On the negative side, it could mean he wants people to think he's going to ND so his announcement can be a surprise.

Most likely, it means nothing.

It's really very simple...Does Gray have the courage to accept the challenge Spurrier has embraced and help build the first championship program at USC....Or will he slither into the Notre Dame hype and jump on what appears to be a gravy train bandwagon...

Is Gary Gray a Gamecock fan??? Yes he is...Does he have the mental strenght to resist the positive public hype surrounding Notre Dame...Despite the fact Weis has beaten nobody at Notre Dame, public perception is he will win big...All kids get from the local media is negative reinforcement about South Carolina...Some kids have the strenght to see thru that crap and some don't...Thats why Rodney Paulk is one of my favorite recruits....

My advice to Gary Gray is to follow his heart...If he wants to be a Gamecock, thats exactly what he should do...If he feels Notre Dame is the path of least resistance to success, he will make a huge mistake...MOst often kids create huge problems for themselves by looking for something easy...There is no pie in sky....Success is a product of hard work and good decisions...Steve Spurrier has won SEC championships and a National Championship...Charlie Weis has presided over nothing.....
what do you guys think of this? i think steve spurrier mania has gone to the heads of a few USC fans.

He's frustrated that CW is coming into South Carolina and pulling out one of the best recruits that they have. If this kid wants to win he will come to ND. And from all of the info that we have so far it looks like he is a smart kid and he will make the right decision.
Envy will kill you fellas. Everyone wants to be ND right now and the only way they can sound like they don't is to try to tear down ND with bulls$it.

I think he will go to FSU if he doesn't go to ND anyway.

Wake up son!! We're Back Baby!!

I trolled over to their Rivals site looking for info. Big mistake. There isn't a team, including Notre Dame, where their Rivals board isn't dominated by complete fools and immature dopes. There are good posters out there, but the majority? Short bus material.

Most of the Gamecock people sound like this dope here.

Lots of ND hate, Weis fat jokes...nothing very substantial. Only Clemson fans chime in to say anything realistic or positive about the situation and that is clearly trolling out of spite. One of them actually said that Spurrier's NFL credentials and connections are equal to that of Weis because Spurrier was a head coach there and Weis only a coordinator. Wow.

Down South, Spurrier is God. They're pretty confident he can bring them into the fold as an SEC contender. They seem to think Gray picking So. Carolina is a no brainer, as we think picking ND is a no brainer. However, their rationale is full of Lynardy Skynyrd lyrics, yankee hatred and overall bad arguments.

And I'm not being sarcastic. I mean those three things literally.

If Gray picks South Carolina, gimme back my bullets.

FWIW, Mike Farrel on Rivals is predicting that Gray is going to South Carolina - medium confidence.

Wow Mike, if I wanted a heads or tails guess I would have turned to Mr. Lincoln. What a dope.

I went to ND to undergrad and to South Carolina to Law School.

South Carolina is a great place.

ND is God's country.

Jigga, in many respects you have understated the truth.

The path of least resistance for this kid would be to go to SC. He will not have to make new friends. He will be able to go home every weekend. He will not have to go to class. He will live with football players, etc., etc, etc.

Broaden your horizons kid (and win a NC while you are at it).

Jigga, go to their Boards and ask them about the Chicken Curse.
