Cable, 6-7, 85% shooting from the arc is more accurate than anyone else in the game shooting in the paint.

1 loss in three years against conference foes. Regular seasons and ACC tournament games is a remarkable feat.

Two things only from me:

1). We were somewhat tired, and they more so. Some of the slop was due to that, but it also exposes the true warriors from the others. This is why, in some ways, Hannah was the best player on the floor today ... Maddy and Lindsay too of course. Brianna was somewhat slow all game; I'll bet she was dinged or gassed to begin with. Our soft players were exposed as what they are. We are very lucky that SU doesn't know how to play zone, so Kate could get foul line jumpers and we got something out of her points wise. The frosh aren't ready really for primetime. Michaela was OK, both head and physically. Muffet didn't play Mychal any serious time until late [when she got 3 really ticky fouls.] It could have been Muffet's fear that she was going to have to outscore a hot team, and Mychal doesn't score.

2). Muffet apparently made a defensive theory/plan to stop two of their big three. She knew that Maddy would never go casual on the main three-point shooter, and she did not. Maddy couldn't help as much as usual, but amazingly she even did some of that. The plan on the second scorer was to force her to her left. If Lindsay was on her, that worked. Some of the other girls seemed to forget the plan. This is why Muffet has to pull some of them quickly --- they just don't get defense, or they are terrible at defensive posture and foot-movement [unfortunately, Marina is the worst at the posture stuff, and Arike still has no instinctive clue about coverage --- neither does Kate.] Had Hannah not had to play so much forward, we could have stopped their whole show --- this lack of even a second physical big drives me nuts; can't imagine what it does to the staff.

This probably won't happen, but I'd vote for what the commentator said, and put Hannah on the All-Tournament team.

Mike,

I'm not so sure Turner was slow, it may have been more how the offense was run. She was 5-12 from the floor and 8-12 from the line. She did have 11 rebs including 4 on the ND end, blocked 4 shots, had a steal, and an assist. That's a lot of action in 31 minutes.

One of the things I noticed with ND's clock eating offense was several times ND ran the shot clock down to 3 or 4 seconds and with the ball handler driving for the basket and dishing to Turner under the basket in traffic with two defenders fronting and backing Turner. There was no place for Turner to take a step to get a good shooting angle, no time to pass back out to an open player, so she went straight up with a low percentage shot in a sea of arms. With two good shoulders and a season in the weight room, she might have muscled a basket or two but considering her injured shoulder her game is more finesse than muscle. When ND got the ball to her with time to work on the shot clock she was productive.

I'm curious why Kat was taken off the floor. She only had 18 minutes of PT. In the first half of the first quarter, she was 4-5 with 3 rebs, and an assist. She played the high post and was deadly with her mid range jumper. When she didn't take a shot she effectively moved the ball around finding the open player. ND established a solid lead in the game with Kat of the floor. Then she went to the bench and Turner got a lot of work and a lot of attention from Orange defenders. With on the floor with Turner ND was a threat high and low that SU couldn't handle.

BGIF,

of course I'm just one old basketball coach so could be wrong. I'll tell you what I meant in my comments.

A). Turner looked both slow and unusually un-ZEN in the first quarter [should have said that]. She was just slightly in the wrong position on the boards most of the time, and she's usually a freak at being just the opposite. She missed at least two uncontested lay-ups [relatively uncontested], and a couple of other easy shots [for her]. It was as if her body was a step too slow and her mind went a bit too fast to try to compensate --- making it worse. You noticed that Muffet took her out several times and played Kate and Hannah --- normally odd. Later in the game she began to find her legs and her ZEN. The plays that you're talking about were almost all the fault of the perimeter players [not Lindsay] for not looking for reasonable shots late in the clock. Brianna was fine then, and did what she could.

B). Westbeld WAS deadly from the low foul circle. But she was consistently deadly to us on defense. Muffet HATES that. Kate, when second defender on a high pick and roll, almost never hedges out far enough to give the primary defender enough time to recover. Then often she is very slow to recover herself --- almost slow motion to catch up to her player. Kate has extremely poor athletic posture defensively --- almost no knee bend with any explosion in it --- contrast the DPosition of Maddy, Lindsay, Hannah, Mychal, even Brianna when the ball is not right down inside [when she has to get totally vertical.] Even Michaela gets knee-bending sometimes, and Arike could if she'd pay attention better to the job. Kate:no. I have never seen her make what I call an aggressive "digger" play. When this is happening off the ball, viewers don't notice, but Muffet does. By the time the TV centers on the resultant score, viewers don't see the lazy lack of defensive urgency that caused it. Muffet won't tolerate that. Once Syracuse adjusted to that foul circle soft spot, Kate's offensive production began to look marginal. Muffet added it up and pulled her to help the defense.

.... my opinions. Only Muffet knows.
