They take three star players and turn them into NFL draft picks.

I'm no Iowa fan, but Kirk Ferentz is better at doing more with less than just about anyone in America.

Looks like Smith has made a decision and will decide today. I'm thinking Iowa.

According to B&G (which is the best source out there IMO) he did get an offer finally.

Interesting, now ND is offering people that are committed elsewhere...

Guess who has an offer??? OH yes, A 4 star LB out of Kansas. You will be hearing more about this soon i believe. Yes, he is committed to Iowa but has maintained his favorite school is ND. His father played here. Go Irish!!!

If Minter is the reason he did not get an offer from the start his firing wasn't soon enough. How in the world do you not offer a kid this good first of all and on top of that he wants to follow in his dads footsteps at ND. Minter just didn't get it and I am glad he is out of here. His defense wasn't good and he didn't recruit well. CW had to go talk with Harrison Smith to get him to come here b/c Minter could not get that done either. It may hurt now that he's gone with recruits, but what a relief. Hopefully CB and CW can get this kid to come here to play just like his dad did.

I believe Charlie simply took a "Only the Elite, or nothing at all" arrogance about recruiting this year... and it blew up in his face, I hope he learns from it, b/c Smith isn't the only three-four star stud we could have had if only we had shown interest... Our class would be complete and solid on both sides...

The make up of most teams are not only elite players. Four star guys are still pretty good. Neal,Little,Tate, and AA so why not do the same on defense.

In my opinion, if someone with the prowess of Weis were recruiting the defensive side of the ball, then the All or nothing approach to talent would work. The offense is Weis' main concern when it comes to recruiting, and the talent we are getting on offense is the top-notch talent that Weis expected to get. On defense, the elite players were down to either ND, or whoever, but we didn't have the recruiters who could close on kids (minter). If Brown is as good of a recruiter as he is supposed to be, then the Elite or nothing approach should work on defense as well. It was my impression that Minter decided not to offer Smith, not Weis.

IN This last week or 2, charlie should be going back over his 3/4 star defense list and
pulling out all stops on lbs and dl - it may be a little embarrassing to be calling kids for
the 1st time at this late date - but a lot more embarrassment if we suffer blow out losses
next year - not only to the USC's and Michigans - but possibly to PSU and UCLA if the
dearth of quality & quantity on D. is allowed to stand come 2/7

I don't think that you want to go crazy. You still want quality players, not just fill-ins. That's why there was such a purging of Ty's last two classes. There were a lot of fill-ins.

That said, I would be interested to see what other offers go out.

My gut says that Brian will come to ND (despite the 11th hour).

Brian is getting an in home visit and a visit to South Bend next week. He is still committed to Iowa but he has always loved ND. I think we get a commit from him next week. Go Irish!!

If he does commit to ND he has to be a fan favorite. The guy obviously loves ND as much as the rest of us even if he does stay at Iowa

A poster on DD says Smith is getting a visit from Meyer this week ... I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA if this poster can be trusted, so don't freak until we get some confirmation, but I thought it was maybe worth passing along.

And in any case: the kid is committed to Iowa, and the only reason he's looking at ND is that he's a legacy and it's his dream school. I can't imagine that Meyer could make a dent on him (though I thought the same about Trattou) ... but maybe he'll bring enough good ol' negative recruiting to get him to STAY at Iowa (lol)?

In any case, if Meyer does visit Smith, then he officially surpasses Petey Poodle as the biggest cockwad on the planet.

Cockwad used in that context has officially become my favorite word. Nicely done.

4 Star LB Brian Smith

4 Star LB Brian Smith

Overland Park (Kan.) St. Thomas Aquinas four-star linebacker Brian Smith already had the next 12 months of his life mapped out. He was ready to graduate, head to Iowa City and join his future teammates as a Hawkeye. But those plans hit a bump in the road last week. That's when Notre Dame recruiting coordinator Rob Ianello called Smith and offered him a scholarship.
Note: His Dad played football at ND,we could have a serious shot here.

I think the timing of this offer really plays in Iowa's favor. Brian has been committed to them for several months, and with only 9 (or so) days left til LOI day, I don't hink he will switch.....though, I REALLY hope I am wrong!

Yeah, I know JT was almost the exact situation, but for some reason I think Brian stays committed to Iowa.

JT committed to Florida as soon as he confirmed in his heart that Florida was the place he wanted to be. I would like to believe that he committed to Florida as soon as he could in order to give CW and Co. as much time as possible to replace him.

For Brian, I believe he wants to do the same, but since he is fence sitting this late in the game, I believe he stays with Iowa.

If he's so in love with ND, then how can he not come here, even if we didn't offer him until just recently? We were going after other guys and didn't want to make Smith an offer we might have to take back. Now we know we're not getting certain guys, we can offer him a scholarship. It's not like we told him to piss off and now are crawling back to him because he's our only hope. He was on our list, just not at the top. Now he's at the top. I don't see him turning down ND.

This is a quote from Brian at the beginning of his recruiting process.

"I really want to go to Notre Dame." Smith told Scout.com. "Notre Dame has always been my dream school. My dad went to school there, played football there, and I never missed a game growing up. My favorites right now are Notre Dame, Michigan, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Florida and Michigan State."

I am still a bit mystified that Brian Smith was not offered a scholarship a year ago. I know that the recruiting philosophy at the time was to go after only the most elite players on both sides of the ball, but it seems as though the coaching staff should have made an exception on this kid because of his pedigree and desire to go to ND. Hopefully they have realized by now that you can not recruit only elite D players until you have an elite D, but this kid is not chopped liver anyway. I beleive he was only a 3 star everywhere at the beginning of the recruiting process, he is now a 4 star on Rivals and the last member of the ESPN 150 so he must have had a great senior year. It just seems that if you have a legacy kid who is at least a 3 star, whose first choice is ND, and who plays a position that you really need help at like LB, should have received an automatic scholarship offer. From his quote it sounds as though Brian would have been willing to come to ND to provide depth even if the Irish had been able to recruit the Chris Donald's of the world. I am not saying that every 3 star legacy kid should be an automatic. For example it would have been foolish to recruit another QB this year, or a WR next year just because they are a 3 star legacy, but at positions where you either lack depth or talent, which basically applies to every Defensive position right now, it just does not make sense to have let a kid like Brian Smith slip through the cracks until this late in the game. The coaching staff really dropped the ball on this one, but maybe they will get lucky if ND is still Brian's dream school despite everything.

There is an article just posted on Rivals where Brian's dad Chris confirms that 4 ND coaches were at the Smith house on Sunday night, and also confirms that Brian will be making an official visit to South Bend this weekend. That alone would seem to indicate that Brian still has a strong interest in going to ND.
