Posted this in the game thread but I'm not convinced the outside line was the wrong call there...his first job was to keep the guy from getting outside with it, if you force him back in then there's at least a chance that someone else on D can clean it up.

I know. I would have preferred that he take a more aggressive line, accelerating to the ball carrier before he can get the corner on you, but leaving you in position to make the tackle. But that's easy for me to say, from the comfort of my recliner.

So let me get this straight. The ball is at the two yard and you think the play is not to try to make the tackle but simply to take an angle to force the ball carrier cut up the field?

No. I don't think that is what he is saying.

ND obviously got caught in the wrong defense.

Someone has to keep outside leverage, or it is going to be a score every time.

Someone has to be available from the inside.

If Baratti had someone outside he could have cut across Thomas' face, like some suggest.

But that is about it. ND was fucked by the time the ball was in Thomas' hands.

I got bored with watching the Giants and saw that the ND game was replaying on ESPN U. Saw the play in question and Temple's TE lined up about two yards to the right of offensive right tackle and slightly off the outside shoulder of James O. JO recognized the play immediately and started up field which was the only direction he could go as the TE was blocking down on him He actually made a good play forcing the back to continue outside and slightly up field. Baratti was in a position to make the play but really looked like he wanted no part of tackling the guy who simply turned up the field and scored. Of course Schmidt came running running down the line but was at least three steps too slow.

The saddest thing is that Barratti is our first safety off the bench, that's pathetic man. Can't wait for all these safeties we have coming in. Because my goodness how is that our 4th best guy? Why wasn't Farley in there? Heck put Devin Butler in there, that was so painful to watch on 4th down. Like watching Lo Wood try and cover Robert Woods

Woah, I don't know if that's fair. It's his first game in two years with two shoulder injuries. It's a tough situation to be put in. If he's getting first team reps this week in practice maybe he has a chance for a better showing.

It was a bad play but let's give the kid a break considering the circumstance.

I understand it's a really tough spot for him but I'm just wondering why he was the first safety off the bench then?

Because Tranquill is injured, Sebastian is injured and Shumate ejected. I could see putting Farley back there but you never plan on having to use your 4th string at any position really. And when bad plays happen from your 4th stringer when you have to use him...well, that's why he's the 4th stringer.

Our only options were Baratti or switching Farley to SS...which he really never plays anyway. Even when he did play safety in '12 he played FS along side Motta at SS.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the frustration but it's hard when we're already so depleted to deal with an ejection. Maybe the coaches should have a better plan going forward like shuffling some DB's around if it happens again but we were dealt a tough hand in that situation and the bad play was a result.

Let's just hope Nick can have a good week of practice and hold up well during the first half next weekend.

This solves no current issues at safety, but I said before he signed that Justin Brent could be a great safety. Wonder if they'll move him there in the spring since RB will be loaded.

I was definitely on the "if not WR, then S" train for JB. Would suck to see him have to make another position change, but better now than senior year.

I assume it was because Farley took all his practice reps last week at the other safety position, whereas Baratti took second team reps behind Shumate? The coaches probably didn't want to deviate from the game plan to the extent of playing someone at a position he had not prepared to play during the week of Temple game prep.

But Kelly said yesterday at his Sunday teleconference that Farley and Redfield will be the starters this Saturday.
