Thanks for directing me to this. I never knew. With a little "cleansing" of the audio quality I would most definitively preferred the song as originally written.
"The Long and Winding Road" is probably the worst offender.

You didn't know who Dave Grohl was? Dude is a rock and roll legend. One of the most influential musicians over the last twenty years.

Fuc'n A, dude.... [/smdh]

Dave is one of the best drummers of the last 30 years, behind Danny Carey of course. Dave added so much musicianship and aggression to Nirvana when he joined.

I have got to respectfully disagree that Dave is one of the best drummers in the last 30 years, even limiting it to just rock or metal. I cant even put him in my Top 20 as far as drumming skills go. Is he the man... yes... is he a fsbuwlous musician and a rock god...yes

I dunno. I'm not a big jazz person, so my personnel is strictly rock/metal (and mainly alt/prog metal with a little heavy mixed in), but I find it hard to name guys that are around his level that have come out in the last 30 years. Matt Cameron from Soundgarden/Pearl Jam, Mike Portnoy from Dream Theatre, Sean Kinney from Alice in Chains, Joey Jordison from Slipknot, Danny Carey from Tool, Abe Cunningham from Deftones, Chad Smith from RHCP, Mike Bordin from Faith No More, Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree, but that's all I can think of.

He doesn't make my top 50. But I do enjoy him a bit as a performer.

Silly kids.

I spent the bulk of my music listening time today listening to Sunday Valley's only album. That's some MEAN Telecaster playing.

Yeah, but I'm talking about drummers that came out of the last 30 years. Bill Bruford was huge WELL before 1985 while with Yes and King Crimson, as was Stewart Copeland, Billy Cobham, Terry Bozzio and Steve Gadd. (Copeland and Bruford are among my top 10 drummers of all time)

Lombardo definitely wrung a bell, but like I said, I'm not a huge metal buff, while I know Slayer, but don't KNOW Slayer. The rest I'm not too familiar with, but Agren and Abts I distinctly recall watching them a while back.

I guess I am confused by "came out".... all of these guys have massive bodies of phenomenal work over the last 30 years to present and are still at the height of their talents. Not that it matters anyway but you are missing out on some great music in other genres it sounds like. :)

We can add Dave Matthews Band and Mastadons drummers to that list as well. Quest Love...Max Weinberg, John Fishman, haha so many great drummers.

By "Came out", I mean, they started our or made their primary mark by 1985 or later. Bruford for example, was an established himself as an elite drummer by the early 70's, and while he continued his success well past that, it disqualifies him from contention.

I have quite a few drummers that I know of, so I wouldn't say I'm missing out. There's A LOT of drummers out there, and you're not gonna know 'em all. Fishman comes to mind, as I was into Phish for a little while. But I can name a few more like Tim "Herb" Alexander from Primus (missed him before), Michael Giles from King Crimson, Phil Collins of course, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Ginger Baker from Cream, Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden, Phil Selway from Radiohead, the list goes on for a while, but I can only remember so many drummers without looking them up (I did for this post obviously).

I agree with this...Dave Grohl's drum playing is very basic, that's not to say it isn't good (I don't think he has played a double-stroke in his life - he is a Right-Left kinda guy, you might get a paradiddle out of him). But to some ppl, you might see DG playing multiple instruments and be impressed by that. But as a drummer, I see a guy who doesn't play drums in any remarkable way. I suspect his guitar prowess is similar. That being said, he is a phenominal song writer, and without a doubt a very talented guy. Just off the top of my head, Harry Connick, Jr. is a FAR better musician than DG.

just to add a few...Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Joe Morello (my personal favorite drummer ever), Vinnie Colaiuta (perhaps the most cutting-edge drummer around). Steve Smith (yes the dude from Journey) is a world-class drummer as well.

Vinnie Colaiuta definitely deserves to be mentioned here. I cant say he is the best drummer out now, but I can't tell you any drummer I would pick over him at the current time.

Dave Lombardo is the best drummer ever because...Slayer Rules!

I like Lombardo ALOT, he has been a HUGE influence as well and continues to be - He is super talented, a trial blazer....but in the end, he is just a rock drummer. I do agree Slayer rules (at least the Lombardo-Slayer era(s))

wtf??

.....Tim "Herb" Alexander from Primus (missed him before) .....Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden......

these 2 guys are huge influences as well (like Lombardo). However, another guy not mentioned here, who has great dynamics, and another huge influence (maybe the biggest for me) Is Jimmy Chamberlain from smashing pumpkins. Dude seriously flies under the radar, a great drummer indeed. (I know his pinkies being flared-out is kinda bad technique, but idc - still love his style.)

I've linked this video a few times before, but its worth doing again. More than a glorified metronome, here is Joe Morello counting off the song by playing the melody on the drumkit:

IMHO, Joe Morello has the best dynamics of any drummer I have ever heard.

Teenage Time Killers is streaming their album that will be released on the 31st.

In 1969, Rolling Stone magazine wrote a review of an album by the rock supergroup "The Masked Marauders," whose members included Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Mick Jagger. The whole thing turned out to be a hoax. However, you'll have to trust us when we say we have the debut album from a new supergroup, the Teenage Time Killers, whose lineup includes Dave Grohl, Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age, Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Reed Mullin of Corrosion of Conformity, and many other punk and metal icons. Take a listen for yourself.
