Recruiting Notes
Trayvon Mullen showed up in purple shoes, had on LSU gear, and he had an LSU backpack on his back.
That drew him some extra attention.
"LSU is not my top school; I do not have a top school right now, but I do like them a lot," said Mullen. "I love their pro-style defense, how they play aggressive, and how they use big corners like myself.
"I really like I fit into what they do very well and I like them a lot."Other than LSU, the four-star corner said he liked Florida State, TCU, Auburn, and Ohio State right now. That list can change, but one school he expects to stay on it is one inside his home state.
"Florida State is a great school and they are in Florida, so it would be great to play for a state school. I know FSU is very high on me and I like how hard they are recruiting me right now."They have been producing top corners too, so I really like that. They are up there for me."
Some visits will take place this spring, but he does not have any scheduled yet. He wants to get to Notre Dame, Ole Miss, and UCLA for the first time in the coming months.
A decision is likely to come in 2015, not 2016.
"I really think I will commit sometime during the season," said Mullen. "I do not think I will go past that. I will take visits this spring and summer, then during the season and be ready."
The No. 1 corner in Florida, Saivion Smith, recently committed to LSU and Mullen spoke with him about his early decision.
"I just wanted to talk with Saivion to see why now was the right time. I wanted to just see what he felt, what he was thinking, and see what I could pick up from him."
FSU and LSU have made strong early impressions, but at least five schools are high on Mullen's list at this time.
Miami Nike Opening Regional Review
Early on, it just looked like Mullen was just going through the motions and not really focused on the drills, but when the time came to compete, he was all in.
Mullen was tested with some of the top wide receivers in Florida and he passsed tests against smaller, quicker receivers and the bigger, longer ones Saturday. He is very long, so his recovery ability is a strength and that length really helps in different ways against receivers of all sizes.
He showed he can play on and off coverage, but he really excelled in press where he could use the arm length to knock receivers off routes and throw off the timing between the receiver and the quarterback.
His back pedal is a little choppy and he needs to sit a little lower on the move, but he has very loose hips and he transitions well in coverage. He ran with the fast guys and showed good eyes in coverage as well.
