I agree with you. You make some good points. Just signing kids because they're highly rated and thinking you can just jam them into the system absolutely doesn't work. That happened to Bobby Bowden near the end... he started letting Scout and Rivals do his recruiting analysis for him and ended up with some teams high on talent and low on character and desire. Saban needs to get back to finding more of those 3- and 4-star kids who feel they have something to prove and will out-hit, outwork, and out-desire anybody else.
Kelly is doing a good job and building something at ND. His approach may take longer and frustrate you guys sometimes, but you're getting there for sure.
Let's look at some facts. In the business/competition model of roster management that Saban has, this is how the roster looks in the last two years broken down by class size:
2014 - 10 (2010 class)-9 (2011 class)-15-21-24(incoming enrolled freshmen)
2015- 5 (2011 class-includes Coker) - 15-18-25(includes Scarborough)-22
Again,
2014- 10-9-15-21-24
2015- 5-15-18-25-22
(Fall roster, does not include walkons given scholarships)
Of the twelve seniors in 2015 (RS Seniors and Senior in their last year of eligibility), three are three stars - Coker (a transfer), Lake (DT) and Washington (S)
Of the fourteen seniors in 2014, three are three stars - Shepherd (OT), Ivory (DT), and Perry (S).
Looking at Saban's recruiting classes for 2014&2015,
- in 2015, three are three stars
- 2014, four are three stars
(Rivals rankings. Kicker eliminated.)
Three stars recruited to Alabama have a small chance of completing their education at Alabama. Of course, the early entrants to the NFL draft are eliminated because they do not become seniors either year. But most are four or five stars.
