"They definitely are up there," Malone-Hatcher said this past weekend at the Rivals Camp Series in Cleveland. "My parents love Notre Dame and my family likes the coaches a lot. It's a great athletic and academic school, so there is a lot of upside and it's a very short drive from home."

"He's definitely filled in [assistant coach] Mike Elston's spot in my recruitment and he is a real home grown type of guy, and you can definitely tell he keeps his roots," Malone-Hatcher said. "I like that especially because my family would be 20 minutes away. So it's kind of the same."

Top-10 2017 WDE Corey Malone-Hatcher impressed by Alabama, Notre Dame visits

Corey Malone-Hatcher - Wescott Eberts (SB Nation)
Look for more schools to join the race for the rising prospect this spring.

ADDISON, Ill. -- It's been a whirlwind spring for 2017 St. Joseph (Mich.) weakside defensive end Corey Malone-Hatcher after picking up numerous offers from some of the top programs nationally.

And it's all come as a bit of a surprise.

"Honestly, I can't tell you that I expected all this," he told SB Nation Recruiting last Sunday at the Nike Opening Regional Chicago.

"I was hoping that one day it was going to take off here. I was being patient, but it's gone further than I ever thought it would, so I'm grateful and I'm blessed. I'm just looking forward to it continuing."

Alabama

One of the big recent visits and offers for the 6'3, 246-pounder ranked as a consensus four-star prospect and No. 8 weakside defensive end in the 247Sports Composite was to Alabama.

"It was awesome," he said. "It was really cool that they rolled out the red carpet for me. They had former players and current players, so we got to see how they work and how they interact. Got to talk to all the coaches. Talked to the new linebackers coach because they're recruiting me at the hybrid outside linebacker position. He's a really nice guy -- he's newer and younger, so we can relate. He seemed like he was doing a good job while he were there."

One of the highlights was getting to spend some one-on-one time with head coach Nick Saban.

"There were probably seven or eight kids visiting and I think I was the only one he sat down with individually to talk about the future and how the process goes with that," said Malone-Hatcher. "I was really grateful that he would take time out of his day right after talking to some NFL coaches. We talked about how their defense works and how their scheme is, how they like to play hard, and how they focus on developing maturity. They said they did their research, checking my grades and my background and they liked everything they found out about me."

However, Malone-Hatcher was quick to point out that a commitment to the Crimson Tide won't be forthcoming in the near future despite the quality of his visit.

"Definitely excited, but there's no lean -- there's a lot of schools that I really like, so I'm excited to see how it continues."

Notre Dame

Another recent visit that made a big impression on the Michigan product was to see the Fighting Irish, with the family atmosphere and relationship between the players two aspects that stood out to him.

"It was really cool -- they rolled out the red carpet, too," he said. "It definitely seemed like they really care about their players by investing a lot of time into everyone who plays there. They have your back and seemed really close-knit. It's a family atmosphere. We talked to a panel of the current players and the early enrollees, telling us about their experiences. There were no coaches there, so it was really uncensored. They were really honest about what they thought. There are ups and downs, but they said that the way everything works out is a fun atmosphere."

“I anticipate being able to enjoy that part but also get to spend more time with coach Gilmore and further that relationship. He’s been awesome. He came by the school I think twice. We talk on the phone a lot and he’s been putting a lot of work in on my recruitment. It’s been really evident.”
Gilmore has been forging a relationship with the 6-foot-3, 225-pound prospect by talking about things off the field.
“He’s just down to Earth,” Malone-Hatcher said. “He’s one of the coolest guys that I’ve ever met on the recruiting trail. He doesn’t talk about football a lot is what I notice. He’ll ask about my family a lot, which if you’ve seen me anywhere out in public at a football event I’m always with my family. We’re really tight knit. I feel like they have that same vibe going on at Notre Dame. They have that tight, close togetherness.”

"He's really cool — he just seems original. There is nothing plastic about him, he's down to earth and he'll have conversations with you about his family and then he'll ask about my family all the time. He just — I don't know — gives off a different vibe than most defensive line coaches do. He has an intensity about him, but he's also calm.

"He's not the type of coach that's going to start screaming at you. He talks you through it and makes sure you do it right, and I'm fine with that, because you have to work with your coaches. He just has that ideal personality I think and he's someone that I like to be around," Malone-Hatcher said. - See more at: https://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1775243#sthash.Uu7fBnMZ.dpuf

"He said as far as his guys go, like the d-line that he's recruiting, he said that he would love for me to be that main piece that they have coming in for the 2017 class, which I was really exicted to hear that, because I know they have offered huge guys like A.J. Espenesa," Malone-Hatcher said. - See more at: https://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1775243#sthash.Uu7fBnMZ.dpuf

"I'm really just waiting it out," he said. "There's no need to rush really just because time is a resource that so many people kind of take granted, and I don't want to make any hasty decisions. So I don't feel any need to rush and commit right now or anything.

"[Notre Dame] talks a lot about what the class could be with me in it, and Coach Gilmore really wants to get me, but he hasn't brought up a commitment or anything. That's cool to know that he's going to give me time, and I also think it shows confidence in his ability to develop me and for me to make the right decision.

"We'll see if it's the place for me, but I like Coach Gilmore — a lot."

Scout: Malone-Hatcher recaps Invasion

Junior defensive end Corey Malone-Hatcher returned to Notre Dame for the Irish Invasion. He walked away with a better feel for defensive line coach Keith Gilmore.

Corey Malone-Hatcher returned to Notre Dame as an Irish Invasion veteran.

Last summer Malone-Hatcher, now a junior defensive end from St. Joseph, Mich., attended the first Invasion as an up-and-coming regional prospect. This time he worked out with an offer in hand.

Malone-Hatcher spent Friday night working alongside new Irish defensive line coach Keith Gilmore and competing against some other top targets.

“It was really cool,” Malone-Hatcher said. “I’m not sure but I’m pretty certain that’s going to be their biggest recruiting event of the year. You could tell the effort and the planning. They’ve been thinking about it for a while and they executed it perfectly. It was a great showcase for academics and athletics and coaching abilities. We only had a certain amount of time but we took a lot of tips and technique home to work on. It was really a lot of fun working with a lot of the top guys in the country. I really appreciated the opportunity.”

Malone-Hatcher spent most of Friday on campus before the event even got started, going through an experience similar to a junior day.

Coaches and support staff guided prospects around campus, talked about academics, showed off the football facilities and put together a panel with current players.

Around 8 p.m. the field work started. Malone-Hatcher got hands on with Gilmore for the first time.

“From the first conversation I had with coach Gilmore you get a very good read of him,” Malone-Hatcher said. “He’s just really open. He doesn’t have anything to hide. It’d be hard to tell you a new thing that I got from him. I worked with him and saw his coaching style is fast and intense but at the same time, just like the visit, he doesn’t rush. He makes sure you get the points down you need to get down and maintains the intensity level.”

Malone-Hatcher headed home after the Invasion, then returned Saturday for the big man camp. Gilmore and the rest of the staff didn’t require him to work out Saturday, but asked Malone-Hatcher if he would like to hang around and teach some other campers.

“They had me working with a lot of the kids that were there giving them some decent looks,” Malone-Hatcher said. “I worked with them on getting their hips flipped and making sure they used their club efficiently. I was helping them prep for the one-on-ones. They had some dogs for the o-linemen with Tommy Kraemer and Liam (Eichenberg) and all those. They put in a lot of work.”

Visiting Notre Dame marked the end of a busy week for Malone-Hatcher as he also camped with Michigan and Michigan State.

The Irish, Wolverines and Spartans have all offered the 6-foot-3, 225-pound prospect. Alabama, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Penn State and Tennessee have done the same.

“I feel like I know a lot about Michigan,” he said. “I know a lot about Notre Dame. I need to learn more about Michigan State. I haven’t been able to get down there as much recently. I went to one game down there last year and it was the Ohio State game. The year before that I went to like six or seven of them. It gets more chaotic in my recruitment and I’ve had a lot more schools to check out, so I haven’t been able to get to Michigan State. I plan on getting back down there to further those relationships.

“I’m really comfortable with Michigan and really comfortable with Notre Dame. I’m also really comfortable with Penn State and the coaching staff even though I’ve only been there once. They come to my school so my dad sits down and talks to them and he kinda relays that information.”

Now that camp season is nearing its completion, Malone-Hatcher will likely take a short break from recruiting rather than stay on the road with unofficial visits. Regardless, he wants to keep his recruitment open.

“I think at this point we’ll continue to talk about it,” Malone-Hatcher said. “Things keep getting busier and busier, so we could cut it down and make a top five or top eight or something like that. But I think for now we’re just enjoying the process. I’m kinda starting to get that image of what I want in a school and can start to apply that to what I’ve seen.”

Any idea where we stand with him?

I think we're sitting really well right now. Gilmore has made him a priority since taking the job and it's working. We're pitching him and Espenesa as the bookends for 2017.

Which leads to AJ. I haven't heard anything about him on any front in a while. Is he not doing camps or whatever?
