I mean... seems pretty clear how teams should defend Notre Dame...

After being lights out in the 1st half, Connaughton couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat.

For as great as Grant is, I wish he were more aggressive on offense. He can't be this tepid in the Tourney, we need him attacking.

That's probably the only knock I have on him. He's a terrific player with great court vision and maturity. However, the great ones know when it's time for them to take over, and I don't think he does that consistently enough.

Love seeing dj and Steve picking up the slack for the vets.

If we're going to make it deep, we need all role guys ready for the lead role at times.

I don't think most people realize how clutch of a defense we are at the end of games. Under 5 mins to go we stop a lot

The 5 games we have lost grant averaged 12 PTs. He had 13 tonight . Take the win and move onto duke. I have a feeling duke is gonna be favored by over 10

Can you go into more detail on that?

Miami switched to zone in the second half and shut us down for 12 minutes straight. Other teams have given us problems playing zone D against us this year too. Like Syracuse. Pretty sure that's what Lax was talking about.

Ok. I said earlier that the zone was bothering the team in the second half and got ridiculed on here.

Got to throw it the paint or penetrate the paint against that zone.

I agree that we have trouble against zone but against Louisville zone we played great

Any ND team in the last decade would have lost this game given how the first 10 minutes of the second half went. This was reminiscent of the Louisville Big East collapse in 2011 and the Madison Square Garden collapse last year against OSU. Credit the guys on the floor for not losing composure like those other teams.

Also, Brey said that Vasturia was on an IV this afternoon. Talk about a guy who is under appreciated. If past teams had a guy like Steve I doubt that we would be working on a 12 year Sweet 16 drought.

Yes, but Miami played some zone in the first half and we buried shots. It was the kind of zone that they played, mixing in a 1-2-2 and the 2 big guys exposed us on the block a little bit and created turnovers. We had the same looks through the first 3 minutes of the half that we had in the first half but we just didn't make shots. It was when they really switched up the looks on the zone when we struggled.

Yeah, this is a huge problem. I'm headed to bed and don't want to get too long winded but I've seen similar flaws in multiple games now against different zones. There are lots of problems but basically:
1. It takes away what DJ/Grant do best in getting to the hoop/creating shots for others.
2. We don't have an inside player that can beat up a zone.

Brey needs to find a way to coach this team to not think so much against a zone. They play really hesitant and even when they get open looks it doesn't seem like they attack them with confidence the way they normally do. There aren't enough decisive plays in rhythm.

Throw into Auguste or Grant and Jackson have to penetrate.

I'd like to see us push it more after a stop defensively if teams are going to throw zone at us. A quick outlet out to DJ or Grant and letting them get up court can create even just a quick 4 on 4 that will allow us to do something rather than pass it around the key and look confused against a zone.

I agree but I think what brey was doing was slowing the game down and take time off clock which was not working at all.

We still shot 49% from the field tonight. Not gonna complain about that

They moved it fine against their zone in the first half. For the first twelve minutes of the second half we missed all of our shots. The ball wasn't moving in and out and side to side and we were forced to take bad shots as the clock ran down. When it got to about the 4 or 5 minute mark, they started attacking the zone. I just think they thought the game was over at the half and came out to go through the motions in the second half.
