Junior quarterback Tylin Oden already holds offers from Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Tennessee. He’s also drawn interest from a handful of others including Ohio State, Oregon, Missouri, Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Wake Forest.
Now Oden can add Notre Dame to that list of interested programs.
“Coach (Mike) Elston came by the school,” said Oden, a 6-foot-5, 190-pounder from Spring Hill High School in Columbia, Tenn. “It was the first time I heard from him and saw a coach from Notre Dame. He just came into the school and him and my coach were just talking in the coaches office.”
The message delivered by Elston on Tuesday focused on Notre Dame’s recruiting philosophy.
“They said they didn’t want to be like every other school and just offer me,” Oden said. “They want to get the chance to recruit me, check my grades, watch me throw and check out what kind of person I am. He said if all those things check out they’ll offer me.”
That offer would sit well with Oden. He’s a long-time Notre Dame supporter thanks to what the Irish accomplish on the field and in the classroom.
“I have a big interest in them,” he said. “I’m interested in everybody, but Notre Dame I have a big interest in. It’s just the tradition and the history behind it. It’s a great football program and it’s also a really good academic school.”
Oden has already visited Western Kentucky and Vanderbilt and hopes to see several more schools this winter and spring.
He has a junior day visit scheduled at Ohio State.
“There are plenty of schools I plan on visiting. I signed up for a junior day at Ohio State. That’s the only one for right now,” he said. “I talk to one of their coaches once every week. They have a lot of interest.”
As a junior, Oden threw for more than 1,000 yards and rushed for almost 1,000 more as he led Spring Hill to the playoffs for the first time since 2009. He combined for 28 touchdowns and threw just three interceptions.
“(Junior year) went really well,” he said. “It was one of the best seasons I’ve ever had. I did a lot better passing and running. It was just one of those years I got to show off what I really could do.”
Spring Hill runs most of its plays out of the I-formation, but Oden has also operated out of the pistol, spread, two-back and single-back looks.
He believes his athleticism is his greatest strength.
“I love to run and to run to open up the pass,” he said. “I think I have a really strong arm too.”
Oden also plays basketball at Spring Hill.
He plans to attend several college camps and hopes to attend one of the national combines.
His uncle, Bernard Oden, played quarterback at Memphis in the late 1990s. He is among Memphis’ all-time single season passing leaders. In 1997 he threw for 2,249 yards, which is seventh in school history, and he also completed 170 passes, good for eighth all-time at the school.

Tennessee Grind Time Tryouts Top Performers

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Tennessee Grind Time 7on7 tryouts took place on Sunday in Franklin, Tenn. and attracted some of the top 2016, 2017 and even 2018 talent in middle Tennessee. We take a look at some of the standouts.

...

Top quarterback – If you’re building a 7on7 team, you’d better have a quarterback and in Columbia (Tenn.) Spring Hill passer Tylin Oden, TN Grind Time certainly has a talent. Odin has a great frame at 6-5, 180 pounds but he showed off major arm strength and was accurate throughout the day. He holds offers from Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville and Tennessee.

His brother is in the class of 2018, but he was also named a standout at WR and earned an offer from Tennessee.

Oden Wants Irish Offer (ISD)

At my high school, we run a lot of pro-style and shotgun stuff. We will be doing some read-option and triple-option this fall. It will be a challenge, but I will definitely be up for it. . . .

Notre Dame and Oregon, those two offers would be really big for me. Playing in a wide open offense would be pretty fun.

Tylin will try to make it to ND's Junior Day and is working to earn spots in the major summer camps.

So...... He said in an interview with Mike Farrell that if ND offered he'd commit. Raved about the visit. He's a project type QB but one that I like very much.

With the depth chart, plenty of time for a project.

What is the time table on Haskins, because I agree I like the project and would be willing to take him right now.

Would take him! Like his ceiling and we have plenty of good qb's on roster to let him develope plus doesn't scare away hunter in 17 class who I think is a great prospect

If he is 6'5" with speed, possibly we ought to take him and worry about position later?

Thats still early in the process so if we dont land Haskins we can go land Odin. I would be happy with either

I think Hawskins is trending our way after this weekend, I'd love to know what he said to BK.

That was an incredibly interesting quote he made to Irish247. For the board, during Haskins talk with Kelly where they talked about his decision and timeline. Kelly liked what he had to say.

Just watched Haskins interview with BGI and he told Kelly that he would like to come back and visit again before his decision, so maybe that was what he was referring to before.

Maybe he comes back for the spring game? It would be nice to get a big group up again.

"I don't know what's really going on," Oden said at the Rivals Camp Series in St. Louis on Sunday. "I think they are coming to see me in two weeks, but I'm not sure on the exact date right now."

"It's just a really quiet campus," Oden said. "From what I was told, there's not a lot of students there, and that's fine with me. I came from a small town, too. Going into the [Guglielmino Athletics Complex] was just really nice seeing all of the Heisman Trophy winners and the Four Hoursemen. Going into the stadium, it's a national landmark. I had no idea about that. Seeing all of the history behind that was a great experience."

The knack on Oden thus far, has been his development as a quarterback. He has the frame and athleticism that coaches want at 6-5 and 175 pounds, but his footwork and release need some work."I feel like I can do it all to be honest," Oden said. "I'm an athlete. If you put me in a position and teach me how to do it, I feel like I can get it done for you."

Hope we don't strike out at QB this cycle. I really like Oden as a prospect and think he fits our roster situation perfectly (high ceiling project following a highly touted prospect that could realistically leave before his eligibility was up).

Oden has a red flag that I am not sure Notre Dame or some schools are comfortable with. Great kid, great family and he would definitely be a great fit at Notre Dame, but definitely feel Louisville will be the landing spot for him.

Somewhat surprised to hear this with a Vandy offer.
