Beachem is 0-7 from three tonight. Better to be cold tonight than against NCSU/Duke I guess.

The box score shows ten players getting minutes. They have 7 points between them right now.

They only started coming in with ~3 minutes left and ND up by 20+. Until then only Colson and Beachem had played. This is the same shit Brey does every year and the players are burned out come tournament time.

it's good to see us finally outrebound a team convincingly though.

Who the fuck else should be playing? Every other guy but Burgett is an obvious huge downgrade. They haven't earned minutes.

This. Torres is an energy guy. Let's not get started on Geben. Burg has been struggling.

Lots of teams roll with 7-8 guys. Cold shooting and bad matchups doom us more in the NCAA Tourney than a short bench.

We were up by 20, you don't need to have the starters play the whole damn game every time. Obviously none of the big men are good, but they're certainly not going to get better sitting on the bench. And it's not like they're going to get much of a chance to play against the better ACC teams. So what do you get - the stars are out there for 35 minutes every game, even against the scrub teams, and are tired out by the postseason. I don't think that's the only reason ND always loses in the first two rounds, but I believe it's definitely part of it.

True but Brey burns his players out bc he just doesn't go to his bench enough. Tonight, with a big lead, he could have used guys like Torres and Burgett more. Tinkered with line-ups, in case he needs to go to them in future games. Kept the big 4 fresher for later in the year, etc.

I am NOT a "Fire Brey" guy at all...quite the opposite in fact. But my main criticism of his for years has been the way he manages his bench throughout the year. Tonight he did a phenomenal job of having his team ready to beat-down an inferior opponent on the road. But I wish he had rested his best players more...

Once we got up 20, Geben, Burgett, etc. started getting minutes. I think all the starters played about 30.

i disagree. in the ncaa there are automatic 5 minute breaks every 4 minutes of game time, plenty of time to recover... not to mention all the other timeouts and stoppages in play throughout games. if u watch iu, youll see tom crean go way too deep on the bench for way too long. for real, max hoetzel, for example, shouldnt even see minutes. zeisloft and collin hartman already fill the role he plays.

i think brey is a perfect coach at utilizing bench. these are 20 year olds who played 6 game in 2 day aau tournaments every weekend. i like your point about trying lineups against teams like va tech, but as far as bench play i really like brey's style.

The rebounding was the most impressive part of the game tonight. Va tech is bad but if we could somehow consistently rebound, watch out! This team is exciting even when they don't rebound. When you get out rebounded 43-29 by ND, you are going to lose.

It's not about being tired bc of playing too much in that particular game, it's about being tired bc of the wear and tear of the overall season and playing too many minutes. It's a cumulative thing. Like a kicker who gets a tired leg at the end of the year from overuse.

I talked to a very good D1 player a few years ago and he was overused, and when it came time for his conference tourney, he had no juice left. All the TV timeouts in the world couldn't fix that. That's my point. So IMHO Brey, who I think has done some wonderful things at ND under really difficult circumstances, isn't close to being the perfect coach at utilizing his bench.

Yeah I agree that Brey plays his main guys too much (Grant and Connaughton, maybe Jackson too). I don't think you fix that by going deeper into the bench though. I think you fix that by upping Vasturia, Beachem, Colson, and Auguste's minutes. We don't need to go bonkers and play Farrell, just play Grant and Connaughton 34 min/game instead of 39. Saves them for tourney time

agree to disagree i suppose. with the dropoff in talent on the team you cant afford to have dj, pat, and jerian off the floor for too long. i think brey does a fair job of distributing minutes and utilizes rotations extremely well. they are only playing 3 days a week max. you're getting way more cumulative effect in the nba with 82 games and more per week... connaughton, dj, and jerian all have a chance of playing. i just think on a game to game basis, they can handle it.

Favored by 1.5 tonight at NC State. Would love to get this one before the Duke game Wednesday.

6:30 on ESPNU.

Hoping Coach K gets his 1,000 tonight so his team doesn't have any extra motivation come our matchup.

UVA edged VTech by 3. Buzz will probably get VTech to a competetive level in another season or two. St. John's up on Duke at the half.

Today's game will be a very tough game. NC State is one of the toughest places to play in the ACC right now and they also have enough size to potentially give us problems. These are the kind of conference matchups that will separate the top tier teams from the middle of the pack. Hoping for Auguste to step up and have a big game today.

Thats exactly why im nervous cause i know they are a very tough team. Ive watched a couple of their games and they are no joke. Just need to play our game and we will be fine. Need to rebound and pass around till someone gets open and hit our shots.

Sometimes I'd love to know what goes through Brey's head.

We get two straight stops, culminating in a DJ block of Lacy. SO what do we do? Go 2-3, so they can get that lead back to double-digits.

Why...?
