It's pathetic. Use whatever excuse you want. It's simply pathetic.

Freshman + injuries + doghouse = horrible defense.

Poor tackling, linebackers not taking on lead blockers, safeties slower than our line backers, zero pass rush ,

I don't know that there are two worse safeties playing in college football right now.

I'm just hopin they can nail down walking and chewing gum at the same time.

Work on something as complicated as holding a kick sometime this week.

I wouldn't say ZERO pass rush. They were getting some pressure, but were just a couple of steps too late for most of the game. ND had 4 sacks, including a key one by Martini on 3rd down, in Louisville's second to last series. If they just could have been a step or two quicker to the QB, though, this would have been a completely different game.

I know they are inexperienced, but there are always guys who just never get it. I hope this is because of youth and not a lack of skills.

There is you answer.

They gave up 409, that's actually a little under what I expected. I see a lot of potential, but guys are a step out of position and making mental mistakes left and right (Morgan's facemask and roughing the passer come to mind).

Why the timeouts when ND got to the 10 yard line??

U R allowing UL to get organized on defense and U R leaving them with too much time on the clock .... if you are going to run on first down, at least center the @#$%! ball!!!

At least they played hard in the second half ...

Just a interesting note, ND has lost 4 or more games in 4 of 5 years under Kelly. I have to imagine if ND loses to SC that his seat starts to gain a few hot coals.

Man you just can't get enough huh? I beg you to find anyone that would come to ND and win at a 70% clip. I am pretty sure that he has a lot of wiggle room considering the defensive injuries sustained this year. 2014 was never going to be a playoff run year. I think most people expected 8-10 wins.

Now if the team starts laying down next year with all the talent returning on D then I might be inclined to agree with you.

It's pretty incredible to think these kids couldn't pick this defense up since they reported in June. The basically have been at it for months now and still sing the excuse that it is too complicated.

What players have been saying that it is too complicated?

Its funny that coming into this year we knew are defense sucked and that next year we would be more positioned to win. But since we started of 6-0 and ranked top 10 from beating nobodies everybody's expectations went through the roof. So essentially the performance that was expected has become unacceptable just because we overachieved in the beginning a little bit.

What's concerning is this is the same thing that happened to BVG the last time he coached in college at Auburn. Their defense was historically bad.

5th year head coach. If the team is too young he should have recruited better. The good thing about the fifth year is there are no excuses.

Next year, next year, next year...

He's in his 5th year, next year shouldn't be acceptable regardless how many underclassmen there are. Brian Kelly has been given the world compared to other coaches at Notre Dame too.

Excuses are reasons you just don't want to accept. That's on you.

It's not even like I don't agree that this should have been avoided, it is his fifth year on the job. But what do you want? Fire him? Legitimize your anger?

Kelly has 2015 to right the ship. If he doesn't, his seat is boiling hot if not on fire (ie fired).

Kelly's time at ND has always reminded of Tressel's at Ohio State. Came up the system having basically built a lower division team from the ground up to win multiple national championships (Kelly at GVSU and Tressel's at YSU). Struggled a bit out of the game but showed improvement and beat the rival to end losing streaks and bring a wave of optimism. Both got to the national championship a year before they were expected to be a serious player....and now both programs took a step back as one cycle of players shifted to another that got the ball rolling (to national prominence in Tressel's case). People tend to forget that Tressel's 2004 squad finished the regular season 7-4. But they came back with huge amounts of experience in 2005 and were one of the best teams of the decade. Not saying Notre Dame will do that in 2015, but if Kelly goes 11-1 and 10-2 the next two years...then no one even cares about 2014's collapse.

Except for the fact that Ohio State won 2 back-to-back BCS bowls in Tressel's first four years there, one of them being the national championship

I didn't say they were mirror images. But getting to the natty and winning it are pretty damn similar.

And say what you will about 2012 it was all building for 2013. August of 2012 the general consensus was that they'd be so-so (awful DB corp) but the bulk of it will return in 2013 to due damage. An experienced Golson with Cierre Wood behind a fantastic OL, paired with a downright incredible DL leading the way for another fantastic defense. That team is what would bring ND back. ...But an academic suspension, NFL early entree, and unreal DL injuries stopped that from coming to fruition.

The change into a new bulk of players (and more importantly, leaders) is what is really the comparison, Tressel went from 7-4 in 2004 to 10-2 in 2005. Does anyone really doubt that Kelly can get this team to 10-2 or better next year?

Except we weren't even close to winning the national championship. We barely even showed up. We demonstrated that we didn't have a team that could actually contend with a team like Bama, unlike OSU who proved that they were legit by beating a dynasty-caliber Miami team.

ND has obviously shit the bed the past 5 games. But who do you think they can hire and will come in and win the Natty next year?

Literally closer than any team not named Alabama.

You'd be that OSU fan who shouts "Yeah but the 2006 team sucked!" since they got demolished by Florida.

I don't know, that's not my job. I'm like Shay, I don't have all of the answers. All I know is that we are regressing in front of our very eyes. We went from 12-0 to losing to a crappy Northwestern team and an average Louisville team. Is there any reason to think 2015 will be better? None of these coaches or players have shown anything to be optimistic about.

I don't think ND will ever win another national championship.
