You know whats funny, since he's only known as 'Kramer', people speak as if his character was racist.

Err... "William Wallace is an anti-semite"

No, it's just common protocol to refer to someone as their most popular character.

"Fight and you may die. Run and you will live at least awhile. And dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for
one chance, just one cahnce, to come back here as young men and tell The Jews that they may take our lives but they will never take our freedom!"

Man he was sick even back then....

I just saw the video on youtube... yeah, that is incredibly shocking. I would have never expected it from him, he always seemed like a good guy. But even though "good guys" can get caught up in a moment...it's never like that. Kramer just seemed.....crazy and...like one hell of an ass-hole.

Every since I saw him in Problem Child I knew he was a racist.. Ok just kidding, but that was an awful movie, I hate to even admit I watched it.

He'll be on the Lettermen show tonight. I just saw a commercial. Seinfeld is a guest so I guess he's going to try to help save him. Makes me want to puke.

Audience members in the Ed Sullivan Theater, who were watching Richards on a screen, began laughing at Richards at first, thinking that the interview was a comedy skit, until Seinfeld admonished them, saying, "Stop laughing. It's not funny."

When I saw what he said...I don't think I can listen to it...but when I saw the transcript of what he said---I was sickend by such awful hate. He has no class or morals...or human decency. Put a fork in him...he's done.

As for my thoughts on it, I think people are misinterpreting it horribly and blowing it way out of proportion. What they don't realize is that Richards is not a standup, per se, and didn't have any idea what to do when he was heckled onstage- which, by the way, is one of the worst experiences a person can have short of being killed. Try it sometime.

So a couple of black guys heckle him all night and finally he just snaps (this is the only part we're shown on the video) and since he's an actor and not a wit or a think on his feet guy, he has nothing to do but say the simplest thing that comes to mind, and attack the hecklers with the only thing he knows about them- they're black. He completely freaked out and lost his cool, and went nuts, but he's probably not racist, and what he did isn't that horrible, except in what it will result in in his own life. I would say heckling someone mercilessly while he bombs onstage is worse than what Richards did, which was a desperate man shouting ANYTHING he could to try to regain his dignity and take away the dignity of the people who were doing that to him. That's the key here- "nigger" is a word whose power exists because it makes a person feel subhuman instantly. That's why it's a powerful word. Richards alludes to this himself late in the video. Heckling someone onstage like that as he bombs and is humiliated and struggles in front of all those people has the same impact as calling someone a nigger- it dehumanizes and degrades and humiliates. Richards had a readymade response to the hecklers, and so he responded in kind. It just happened to be an un-PC response, and unfortunate. But as far as which act was meaner, or more offense to me personally, I'd say it's not even close- heckling someone is far meaner, and hecklers, of any color or creed, ARE subhuman, and deserve to be made to feel bad about themselves. It's simply one of the cruellest acts there is, doing that to someone while he's up onstage like that.

You can see if you watch the video, also, that Richards when he freaks out goes into a theater-trained la la land. He is not a standup, again, but theater trained. When he freaks out and panics he begins getting very theatrical and using physical flourishes and mumbling things in an English accent, a theater twang. In fact he goes into a character, which is not being reported in the press about this incident. All the press is saying he yelled "It's a nigger!" several times at the black audience members, which is not true. He addressed them with the reference to "50 years ago such and such would've happened" and then went into character and turned away from them and began pantomiming white hillfolk's reaction to seeing a black man lynched, and that's when he pointed and shouted "it's a nigger" several times.

One must also remember that Richards, being unfamiliar onstage but having some familiarity with modern comedy clubs and what material people use there, was likely influenced by how frankly racist and horrible and free to say anything so many modern popular acts are. Panicking, in a bad spot, he tried to go in that vein, but through sheer lack of understanding of what's allowed and what's not, and how it's allowed, he ended up with this.

To sum up, I think he has definite anger issues (and possible mental issues otherwise), and is probably not particularly familiar with black culture or black people, but is likely no more racist than the average white person. Lay off the poor bastard and save your vitriol for people who actually hurt, or hate, other people.

I will say this... as someone who has lived in a majority black area... I have been to these high priced movies complexes with the nice chairs and such... pay 35 bucks for two people to go to the movies and more often than not the enitre experience is ruined by a group of black people who go out of their way to ruin everyone else's viewing (that and this situtation seems to be alike to me).... I would be lying if I didn't say I have reacted much the same way "krammer" has... especially after I was called a racist for simply shhh!ing in that direction... my reaction has never been to that extent of course but with the same context... people are people... and we are ALL capable of racisim... I personally would be interested in knowing how many slurs were thrown HIS way before he boiled over... say what you will but that's my thoughts...

I don't think any slurs were thrown his way. From watching the video it appears that he was being heckled and simply told he was not funny. But then again, the video was not that clear.

I kind of agree with your comparisons to your theatre experience, I think we have all been there. I believe this is why many people joke that if you can make it in the Apollo Theater, then you are a really good performer. If not, you will be ridiculed off the stage.

Even so, as someone who has attended many amatuer comedy nights, I can say that comedians almost have to expect to get heckled if people do not find them enteraining. It happens all the time at amateur nights. Being heckled at a comedy club is almost like being booed in a sports game. Almost.

No, it's not. People who heckle someone who's standing up there alone on stage are scum. It's never acceptable.

Also, ACamp's post leads me to believe he's more racist than Richards is.

The video of "Kramer" was totally disgusting. Of course, we will see it at least fifty more times before some other idiot does something else.

Thanks for the UHF ref - since then he's always been Spadowski to me regardless of how many people think of him as Kramer. Onto to the matter at hand. If any of you guys listen to Stern, you probably heard this week that this is something consistent with Richard's character (his personal character, not one of his pretend ones). Apparently, this guy has the tendency to lash out at the drop of a hat. It sounds to me like he boiled over and spewed the first hateful, hurtful thing that he could come up with. If he had been confronting someone of another ethnic background, he would have simply picked another derogatory term for them. None of this excuses what he did, but to simply label him as someone who hates black people, I think, does not encompass all of the problems this guy has.

I will agree with ACamp insofar as to say that I intensely dislike those ego-centric people at public gatherings who believe that their right to comment on the proceedings supersede everyone else's right to enjoy or not enjoy the entertainment as they take it in. Whether you like or dislike the act, movie, speech, etc please allow the rest of us to view it without having to vocally interject whatever seems so important to you. We either paid the money or took the time out of our day to enjoy something that is a stand-alone act, not an experiment in group or public participation.

The sad thing is the world we live in today. Was it wrong what he did, yes....but I mean come on people Chris Rock can stand up on stage and even go on TV and be like look at that guy he's a cracker. Why don't we slam Chris Rock for being racist, because it is "acceptable" for him to do it. Those people came to a comedy show and started heckling the comic, should he have used the exact words he did, obviously no but they got what they had coming to them and if they didn't like it they didn't have to show up. I think this is down right stupid that people are making a big deal about this, especially when I can drive down the street and hear countless car stereos saying the exact same thing. Its a double standard and its stupid.
