Personally, I'd rather play in a winable bowl. I don't care which bowl it is, but we need one where we can win. I don't think I'd like to play Ohio State this year.

Guess that's the price we pay for putting in our backups instead of running up the score.

Or for letting a freshman wide receiver put up two scores on us in the 3d quarter, one that went for 72 yards.

Until our defense has a start to finish domination of another team, we are going to be stuck here.

That said, USC plays Cal soon, Fla still has to get past the rest of their reg season schedule and the SEC championship (likely Ark or Aub), Louisville still has Pitt and Rutgers, Texas has A&M and the Big 12 championship, and OSU plays Michigan. If we continue to win, the course will come to us, and we'll be solidly in position for the BCS. My concern is Rutgers, Arkansas, even Boise State or Wisconsin moving up if we don't convincingly put away AF and Army before USC.

11-1, even 10-2, IS an improvement over 9-3. When was the last time you could see progress in consecutive years from Notre Dame? If we win out, it will be the first time ever we've been to BCS bowls two years in a row.

Good thing you run this site. This type of post gets Scooper really angry.

Chickens all around.

we moved up in both human polls. none of the computer polls take margin of victory. likely, it was that unc hurt our strength of schedule. nothing that could have been done about it. running up the score wouldn't have helped.

same thing with giving up 26 points to unc. doesn't factor in. i mean, we might have moved up more in the human poll, but in the eyes of the computer rankings and the bcs as a whole, a win is a win is a win.

I agree Tedwick, except that we might have gotten more votes in the human polls if we had won more convincingly--not just against UNC, but also against UCLA and Stanford. Those extra votes might have made a .001 difference vs. Cal. We were within .0001 of SC last week, and now trail by .013, although they beat a lousy Stanford team.

Id play anyone in a bowl game.

I fear not of Aub, Tex, UF, OSU, scUM, USC, Cal, and any other team in the nation. I simply cannot pencil in my doubts of winning. I see far to many inadequacies with many, to just write my own off. Dont get me wrong, most of those teams can score, but, most of those teams can be scored on - at will.

true to a point....we are ahead of Cal in both Harris & coaches polls but it's the computers that are putting us behind them. Strange how the computers only account for 1/3rd of the vote but are the difference in putting Cal ahead of us.

That and our past opponents getting clobbered...PSU, MSU (though that might be a wash since Purdue was the winner), UCLA, Stanford. Navy beating Duke, or GaTech barely scraping by NC State don't really help much either.

Statistical oddities in the BCS:

Irish are the only team ranked lower in BCS than in each of the 3 components (9 vs 8/8/6 in Coaches/Harris/computers)

Florida is the only team ranked higher in the BCS than in each of the 3 components (4 vs 6/6/5)

I agree...I don't think that if we get into a BCS Bowl we would win. If we had to play a team like Florida we would not do well because our defense cannot stop anything. NC should not have been able to score 26 points on us.

if we beat USC we will be at 4-5.
We won't get to the title game unless Troy smith gets hurt and they get demolished by michigan. Lousiville has to lsoe to rutgers, somehow both auburn and florida have to lose again. Cal has to lose to USC. Texas is vastly overrated as is Auburn. It's possible, I guess. If we make it, we will be the most undeserving team ever to play for the NC.

no faith???
....

lol, just couldn't help myself SVO,
but yes I agree... talk about dodging a fight all you want, ND needs a bowl win... give me a win over a Rutgers or Boise in the Gator bowl any day over a loss to LSU/UF or whoever in the Sugar...

not to mention how nerve racking a matchup w/ UF would be right now...

BYU in 84 played a 5 or 6 loss Michigan team for the title... so I'll take it

Didn't Nebraska play for it one year after getting creamed in the Big 12 Championship game? I think Oklahoma did too, the year SC won.

Nebraska lost 62-36 to Colorado in 2001 in the Big 12 Championship. (Miami won NC)
Oklahoma lost 35-7 to Kansas State in 2003 in the Big 12 Championship. (SC won NC)

You really think the criticism would stop? Instead of ND can't win a bowl game, it would be ND had to play a 2nd tier team to get a bowl win.

A win may be good for the team's psyche (though we lose a ton of players end of this year so who knows exactly how much good it would really do), but I doubt beating up on a Rutgers or Boise would change the opinions of very many in the sports-writing world.

Exactly. ND fans worry too much about what other fans and the pundits are saying. They will always find poo to throw.

They missed last Thursday night's game - the Big East Rules! Three unbeatens and then mighty, mighty Pittsburgh.

From many of the posts here this season we'd be lucky if Rutgers would condescend to play ND. After all Rutgers has a defense!

They beat Illinois by 33 in a shutout when OSU was lucky to escape by 7.

They trounced Navy by 34 in another shutout.

They held UNC to 16 points in their 5 point win.

They layed 56 points on Division 1aa Howard. Weis can't reach 56!

Of course ND hasn't played a Division 1aa school since the 30's.

Is there a Division 1aa team available for a bowl can so ND can win?

Can ND be selected for the Lackluster Bowl so Irish fans can hold their heads up high at the office coffee pot?

No, LSU beat Oklahoma and won the BCS national championship that year. SC finished first in the AP poll.

Please do not perpetuate the myth that the Spoiled Children almost won three straight NCs, when in fact they won ONE. OK, one and a half, but you get my point.

I'm with you on this one Scoop. Play the best opponent you can.

Glory has to be WON, and you win it by beating the best.

And besides, those "sure wins" in bowl games can be elusive. No? Two words: Oregon State.

Florida would be a winnable bowl.

The more I watch them, the more I tend to agree.
Leak throws more "ducks" than Grossman did yesterday.
One wonders why "Suburban" doesn't make the move to Tebow.

Vanderbilt almost beat Florida. Vanderbilt. ND's not on par with Vanderbilt?

FINALLY, someone who sees what I've seen for the past few years. ONE. Not 3, not 2. ONE.
