SIAP, I will delete the thread if this is posted elsewhere but this is a cool little feature done by the NY Times examining where kids end up picking to go to school when they are admitted to multiple schools.

I am assuming that there is some miminum # of combinations (looks like 10) as it doesn't show ND vs the Ivy's and Stanford head to head but when students are faced with the decision between the other "second tier" academic schools, only Duke and UC Berkley are chosen more often. Not shown in the picture are UCLA at 27% and BC at 10% I guess BC really is "Back-Up College."

EDIT: Thread wasn't showing up on front page when it was in the Lep Lounge. Weird.

I think there was a change made or something so Lep Lounge posts no show on front page now. Not sure.

Pham made the change when he allowed cussing in the Lounge but no where else. You have to go to new posts to have the Lounge show up with other threads.

Sample size! Seriously, 4 out 10 admitted to both schools pick Purdue over ND?

The sample size is really small. I also bet that it is somewhat major dependent. If you want to major in engineering then Purdue is a great school.

Engineering undergrad is about the same everywhere. The reputation differences are mostly based on research quality and output, where Purdue is indescribably good. Is a great place filled with wonderful researchers who don't care about you and teach giant classes all the time. I had three offers from Purdue for grad school, great place, but I wouldn't send my kid there for undergrad.

Notre Dame will likely fall by this metric in the coming years, as you now have to apply to Mendoza right when you apply to the university. The old policy was that, if admitted, you could major in whatever you want, but MCoB is at capacity and they're telling you whether you'll be able to major in Business right up front. The kids who get into ND but not Mendoza will likely enroll in different schools rather than come to ND and study something different.

Yup. Better engineering, MUCH cheaper... plus you can get merit scholarships there if you're a ND caliber applicant.

I think this decision with Mendoza... which is similar to how all other top undergrad business schools do things (see: UVA commerce school, Penn, etc.) where you either have to apply up front or after a year at the school... is going to really hurt Notre Dame.

With the FYS system I don't understand why they're doing upfront acceptance instead of merit based acceptance after a year on campus. And I also wonder how this affects athletes.

I think merit based acceptance after a year would be terrible from the enrolling student's perspective. There's no way I would have gone to Notre Dame if I didn't know for sure that I'd be able to enroll in the business school.

Also, a kid who goes through FYS and then doesn't get into Mendoza would likely be screwed in terms of prerequisites for whatever major he ends up taking. My engineering and science friends had much different first-year course loads than I did. That kid needs to know up front what college he'll be entering so he knows to take Organic Chemistry instead of Astronomy.

True... I had to take a bunch of engineering pre-reqs....

I'm just saying, at most schools you apply to their undergrad business school after a year. So obviously there is a way to make it work.

I think we're all forgetting that kids choose ND over USC. Well, at least according to this data.
