By the way West Virginia is currently losing to Louisville, 30-14, it looks as if Steve Slaton's meager, meager, shot at the Heisman is now gone. Two costly fumbles in West Virginia's biggest game of the season is not going to help you and certainly is something that will be avoided on his hopeful Heisman highlight reel. I know see the race as including Brady, Smith, and Mike Hart. As much as I hate to admit it, if Michigan wins that OSU game, Hart could escape with the Heisman. I certainly hope not.....

If Mich beats tOSU, then henne or hart deserve to have a shot at the Heisman, depending on which of them has the great game. Both have played very well this year and our worthy of the Heisman talk as much as it makes me sick to say that.

Slaton benefits greatly from the awful defenses he faces

Well... Slaton's hopes are pretty much done for this year, but he's got plenty of time. He's a sophomore. We'll hear from him again.

Just like that Adrian Peterson kid...

Slaton reminds me of Reggie Bush. Yeah, he didnt have a great game tonight and he got banged up a bit after halftime, but he's an all purpose back like Reggie. He can catch, and run (really, really fast).

His numbers are pretty amazing from this game. If anything, considering Louisville wins, it should boost him in the race. 160 yards rushing and 75 receiving. That's a nice game IMO.

If that is the case, so is Quinn. Slaton is still a Top 5 finisher unless somethign drastic happens.

He's a sophomore. He'll get his shot next year or the year after. He got stung in this game like Quinn did against OSU but Quinn has played to a national audience before and will again. Slaton's exposure has been limited.

Much of Heisman voting is about eliminating those that have a bad game or stumble in clutch time. The "best" player is the one left standing (making the fewest mistakes that were seen by voters).

No way in hell does Hart win it. His name hasn't been mentioned as even top 5. All year. Now, is that fair? No. But it's the truth. No one goes from "not even in the discussion" to "Heisman frontrunner" just like that. It's not the way it works. It's like the polls. It really is Troy Smith or Brady.

Also, Michigan's been winning almost solely on D. When they were killing people on O earlier, it was Manningham as the featured player. Which explains just why Hart hasn't been mentioned.

Mike Hart will be a top five finalist without question, probably top three. You can have Henne.

There are still football games to be played. Smith and Quinn can't go ca-ca and Hart steps up? They don't vote today.

Svoboda, thank you for pointing out Quinn's bad game against Michigan. At least something makes sense here. I like how a guy has a bad game and his name gets crossed off the list, but people are carrying the torch for Quinn to beat out Troy Smith for this award.

Let me know how that turns out.

Slaton is good. He's really good. I'm not sure what being on the sideline during the third quarter was all about, but all that I saw of him I liked outside of these two fumbles that will haunt him for the rest of his career and are surely the downward spiral of his career.

Neither team impressed me much at all. Louisville can run the table and not make the title game this year. A one loss team will play the winner of the Ohio State-Michigan game. And it could end up being the loser of that very game.

Troy Smith's name is already engraved on the little guy. All they have to do is hand him the trophy.

The difference is that Quinn's game was against easily one of the stingiest defenses in college football. it was early in the season, and quinn has since had monster games that really stick out to voters. He's had the comeback wins, he's had the dominating blowouts. Add that to the fact that he was overly hyped at the beginning of the season, and quinn definitely has a chance.

Slaton hadn't played anyone even remotely good until yesterday. yesterday's game wasn't a bad game so much as it was an exposition. yes, he's VERY good. but he's not heisman quality yet. the loss was too late in the season. he'll be in the top 5 this year, but he's going to be 4 or 5 unless he has huge games against rutgers and pitt.

I wouldn't assume that. The guy is solid and remember he's only a sophmore. He will be a heisman contender next year and will probably go pro the following. The guy has skills and will be playing at the next level very successfully.

This looks to be true. But then again who gives a f**k !!
If Derek Jeter can win a Gold Glove while playing mediocre defense at short, then all awards are pure bullshit.
I'm not saying this just because I'm a Red Sox fan but Alex Gonzalez who booted maybe one ball all year (in fact I think he set some sort of record for fewest errors EVER by a shortstop) should have won it hands down.
Don't even get me started about Mikey Lowell at third.
For Christsake, it's called a Gold Glove award. Period !
I'm officially in the "Who gives a F**K camp when it comes to the Heisman and any other award anybody ever wants to give away.

The differnece between BQ's bad game and Slaton's bad game is Slaton had no heart when it really counted. His team's hopes of a Nat'l title hung in the balance and he was sitting on the bench with what was clearly NOT an injury. I'll take a qb who despite having 3 picks fights back and throws 3 td's any day over a guy who fumbles twice and shrinks on the sidelines.

It was gutcheck time and Slaton failed.

I haven't seen such a lopsided heisman race in quite a while. It would take a hell of a turn around (or injury) for Smith to lose it...

But I Bet Smith could get injured in his second to last game (is that the UM one?) and still win the Heisman, he is that far ahead...

That being said, Smith hasn't faced the opponent with (possibly) the best defense in the country. The same one that greatly hurt Brady's Heisman chances. There is really just tons of speculation until Smith plays UM. I know it is said over and over and over again lately, but even if Brady has an amazing game against USC... it will take Smith throwing a couple INTs, and playing generally horrible against UM, for it to even be a race.

The fact that he won a Gold Glove leads me to answer this question: Why should I care?

These awards give agents leverage. Nothing more. Pockets of White Sox fans are pissed Joe Crede didn't win one. Why? So Scott Boras can jack up the price when he's a free agent? Awards and postseason heroics lead to overinflated values. The significance and sample size, respectively, should not mean as much as they do.

As for college football...

Eric Crouch won the Heisman Trophy. Tony Romo won the I-AA equivalent of the Heisman known as the Walter Payton Award. One is QB of the Cowboys. The other won the Heisman Trophy.

Former Chicago Bear Rashaan Salaam won the Heisman Trophy. He was the 5th or 6th back taken in the draft that year and was a Half Baked Bust. Current Chicago Bear Adrian Peterson won the Walter Payton Award and has kept a steady job in the League. He could be a one or two back on some other NFL teams.

Hmmmm...Come on, who's learning yet?!?!

If and when Troy Smith and Brady Quinn win out their seasons this year and Smith wins the Heisman, those who bitch should get bitch slapped. Quinn is no doubt deserving. There just happens to be one guy that might be a bit more deserving this year.

IF his team goes undefeated. Now if they lose to Michigan, or anyone else before the voting, then we have a gripe. Right now, we gripe in one hand and crap in the other until Smith loses a game. One hand fills up first.

Did I miss something? I don't follow the NFL, but is there really an Adrian Peterson playing for them? ;)

Yep. He could start for some teams.

Special teams dynamo from Georgia Southern. Played there under Paul Johnson I believe.

If Smith throws a Pic Six in the 1st Q against UM and then later in the game drops the ball out of his hand, pounces on it like it was a greased pig, and watches helplessly as a defender scoops it up and adds another Six points, the race might get close. If he immediately throws another Pic Six in the next game, it will be a dead heat.

He'll need to wet the bed in any one of these last three games he plays vs. ILL, NU or scUM.

Say he completes half his passes or less with a couple of picks. BQ is in business as long as he keeps doing what he's been doing.

No, it's not just picks. An INT can have the effect of a punt depending on the down and field location. Quinn coughed up the ball on his end of the field for 3 Defensive TDs in a span of 5 quarters. A pair of Pic Six against UM and MSU and the double fumble for Six, 21 points for the opposition is more than wetting the bed.

In the real world I agree. But this is the College football awards world. INT's, fumbles, td's yards etc can all be spun to mean anything depending on the argument someone is trying to make.
