To be clear... A red shirt senior is a 5th year player who did not graduate before their 5th year of eligibility began.

Not a trick question...

So then it kinda is a trick question? Cause general assumption is that a red shirt senior is just someone who got a 5th year to play regardless of graduation. Even if that isn't the technical definition that you have put forward, which anyway im not sure if it is even correct.

Oh haha. I agree with philly as to terminology, but interesting question.

Maybe Gary Gray? He was suspended for academic issues at one point, IIRC, so I wouldn't be surprised if he needed extra time to graduate

Edit: nope, just checked, he graduated in May of his fourth year

I thought in order to get a 5th year at Notre Dame you had to have graduated already.

Obviously I am not 100% on that.

If so does this mean Golson won't be eligible to come back next yr?

He only missed a semester and was an early enrollee so he very well could graduate by May. He will have 8 semesters and 3 summer sessions. If he is just short a few credits could he take them next summer and be eligible to get a fifth year?

Maybe so i just wondered if he would have enough after missing a semester. Of course for all i know maybe he was ahead of schedule before the dismissal and is on track to graduate on time. But yeah maybe he could take classes next summer if needed. Hopefully!

I think being an early enrollee will help him here. He should have as many credits as other red shirt seniors who didn't enroll early. But I don't know if he lost many credits last spring when he was caught violating the honor code.

That's true didn't think about it just evening him out with the non-ee's.

Wait I got it ...

Chris Salvi in 2012.

Earned a schollie after playing as a walk on at ND for two years, but he couldn't graduate in four years because he transferred in from Butler after his freshman year.

Also, for all those wondering if Golson will graduate on time, there's no reason to be worried about it. As I noted already in this thread, Gary Gray had to take a semester off, and he graduated in May of his fourth year.

Football players are put on track to graduate midway through their fourth year. Even with a semester off, Golson should have no trouble graduating by the end of his fourth year, especially since he was an EE, so he should have been ahead of the game at the time of his suspension.

Good, thanks!

Could be right. I should've added non transfer...

This is what I came up with... though I'm sure there were more afterwards and I'm not sure if he hadn't graduated before he came back for the 2003(?) season.

.

Well, considering he only "came back" because he got suspended for a year due to grades, I would say it's a good bet that he did not graduate prior to coming back. He spent his "time off' in Arizona, training with his brother (who was on the Cardinals' roster at the time), and going to some ASU, to show that he could be a serious student.
