Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football, Basketball, and Recruiting Front Page
Irish assistant Bob Elliott was in Santa Ana, Calif., last week to offer three-star junior linebacker Curtis Robinson. While at De La Salle High School he also checked out four-star junior offensive lineman Frank Martin and three-star wide receiver Andre (A.J.) Collins.
For Martin, it wasn’t the first time he’s heard from the Irish.
“They’ve been checking in with me since last year,” said Martin, a 6-foot-6, 280-pounder, who attends the same prep program that produced Notre Dame linebacker Joe Schmidt. “(Elliott) is trying to get me up there for a visit. Nothing is set in stone yet because I still have to figure out what camps I’m going to go to. After we decide that we’ll see where I go for visits.”
NCAA rules prohibited Martin from speaking to Elliott during the school stop, but the offensive lineman has Elliott’s phone number and plans to reach out in the near future.
“He asked me if Notre Dame was still in the hunt for my recruiting. I told him yes and he said they’re going to recruit the heck out of me,” Martin said. “I haven’t been able to get in touch with him lately because I’ve been busy studying for finals but I’m going to call him soon.”
Martin already holds 14 offers, a list that includes Arizona, Arizona State, Boston College, Cal, LSU, UCLA and Washington.
Although Martin plays tackle in high school most college coaches are recruiting him to play guard.
“I think pass protection is going to be a lot easier but I’ll play any position they want me to play,” he said. “It doesn’t matter to me.”
As a junior, Martin helped lead the Spartans to a 9-3 mark.
“I think I am very good with my technique,” he said. “I do need to become a little more quicker for the speed guys off the edge but I’m a good technician and I have very strong hands and I know how to read defenses.”
Martin, whose father played defensive end at Colorado-Mesa and whose uncle played at San Jose State and with the Dallas Cowboys, hasn’t identified any early favorites and he’s in no hurry to make his college decision.
“No favorites right now,” he said. “I’m thinking I’ll probably make my decision by the beginning of my senior year or sometime in my senior year.”
During his visit to De La Salle, Elliott left Robinson with a scholarship offer. Martin provided a scouting report on his teammate.
“He’s really fast off the edge,” Martin said. “He’s really smart and physical too.”
Scout.com ranks Martin as the top offensive tackle in the West region.
