Perused the Tennessee board and they were initially convinced that he was committing to the Vols, but as more stuff came out, the current consensus seems to be that Sterling definitely was favoring the Vols, but they may have been slow playing him because they feel they are in a good position for a couple other DT recruits higher on their board. Board seems to think if he truly does commit tonight it will not be to Tennessee.

I'm taking it that the (Update) part below is the bolded part. It looks like the coach was surprised he was going to announce and probably talked him out of it.

Per his coach at Cleveland High School Scott Riley, Johnson will not be announcing a commitment tonight.

In a move that has caught his former head coach by surprise, DL Sterling Johnson (6-5 290) of Cleveland, NC plans to announce his college choice tonight via Twitter.Johnson tweeted earlier today his plans to reveal his decision between 7:30-8:00 PM.

Clemson and USC are among his offers and the speculation is that Clemson, Tennessee and Alabama are his top three.

Johnson’s former coach Marc Morris just moved to Carolina Forest High School in Myrtle Beach Friday and he said today he was surprised Johnson was making an announcement today. He said Johnson was supposed to make a visit to Ohio State later this month and in fact Ohio State called him today to find out what was going on.

Johnson has visited Clemson, USC, Tennessee and Alabama.

Last season Johnson record 80 tackles with 56 tackles for loss and 8 sacks.

Called Tennessee and tried to commit. They wouldn't accept his commitment until seeing him in camp this summer.

Instead of delaying his commitment, he suddenly decides Clemson is where he wants to be and commits. Of course all the love he suddenly starts giving Clemson seems a bit disingenuous considering less than 24 hours earlier he was committing to Tennessee.

This whole thing smells of a kid who is scared his spot would be taken if he had waited to commit. He had some bad camps this spring and some pretty severe ratings drops on both Rivals and 247.
