As a die-hard Red Sox fan, I'll be sad to see him go. I'm 24 years old and to me, Derek Jeter, Joe Torre, and Mariano Rivera ARE the Yankees.

Jeter and Ichiro's last seasons? Looks like I'll be going to quite a bit of games. (Grandstand/bleacher seats of course)

I like how he is following Mariano's example and announcing before the season. Will get to take his victory lap at every stadium.

I am not a Yankees fan. I am not a Jeter fan either. I respect what he's done. A class act.

This is surprise but I agree with loomis, he should have retired two years ago. I dread having to watch him this year. I fear it is going to be brutal.

Overrated. If he played for my Rays he'd be a borderline HOFer.

Speaking of my Rays I've bought Three Icons to show my fanhood. The Rays and Jaguars are both outdated. This injustice shall no longer go unspoken. Step your game up IE. :)

I'm a Yankees fan...but have always felt he was overrated. I think if he played in another market, wasn't on the greatest franchise in the history of the sport, and wasn't the absolute darling of the NYC media, he'd only be considered a very good player. Sure, still a hall of famer, but receive nowhere near the amount of slobs on his knob he receives from the media/talking heads.

P.S. When Jeter officially retires, does gkirish (is that who claimed it?) tell the tales of him supposedly being gay? The guy who has banged literally half of the chicks in New York.

I used to think that. But 5 rings, 3,200+ hits (don't know the exact number, but he'll probably retire top 10-ish all time), great career average, good RBI and decent HR numbers all time for his position, great defender for most of his career, great in the postseason, up there in every postseason statistic, team leader, etc. say he's nowhere near borderline.

I wouldn't go that far, i'm 23 and the best player i've ever seen is Ken Griffey Jr.

How old were you when he was still at the top of his game though?? Like 8 years old? I am old enough to have seen Pete Rose play, but by that time was no longer Pete Rose...

Yeah, more like 10. Still watched Mariner games just to watch him play though.

K... When he was at the top he was easily one of the best I had ever seen also...

Sure, I'll send out some PMs after he retires.

I'm not sure he was overrated. He wasn't the best defensive shortstop, but his offensive game was above average. As mentioned, look at his career numbers. Then add how he seemed to step up his game during the playoffs.

The backhanded toss on an over throw by the outfielder against the A's is a classic example. If he doesn't have the awareness to go after it, the A's tie the game and have a chance to go up 3-0 in the series. Not only did he get the ball, but his backhanded flip was on the money. He'll be voted in the HOF on the first ballot.

Interesting note. Early in his career, Steinbrenner wanted to trade Rivera for another shortstop and send Jeter back down to the minors. In the immortal words of Paul Harvey; "And now you know the rest of the story."

You can say what you want... Jeter had more "wow" plays for me as neutral fan in the early 2000's (Hell, he had enough during the 2001 playoffs alone) than just about any other baseball player I can think of... ever. His play in Oakland during those playoffs may be the single most memorable baseball moment not involving the Angels I've experienced... I remember where I was, what I was thinking, what happened immediately after, the shock I had over how it happened and what a great play it was… just one of those moments for me.

Easy. Are Warren Moon (stats) and Terry Bradshaw (rings) in the Hall of Fame? Yes

Are they anywhere near the bests to ever play the game? No way.

Jeter has rings and stats. Does he belong in the hall? Absolutely. Is he one of the best ever? I say no.

**This is another problem I have with baseball and the hall of fame. A player is largely rewarded for longevity, which is mush easier to do in a less physically demanding sport like baseball. A guy can put up decent stats every year, largely be an afterthought or "yeah, that guy was ok," but when it's all said and done, his career numbers cause many to believe he is a HoFer.

Nah. See I think people get too caught up with Jeter... It's not like anyone of any regard compares the guy's career to those like Babe Ruth's, Willie Mays' or Barry Bonds'... but he's clearly one of the best players of this generation... MAYBE on the outside of one of the best all time... SO again, he's a clear HOFer, but over rated... that's hater speak just my thoughts... ;)

I think the hater talk should be curbed for me-- I'm a NYY and Jeter fan.

But yeah, he did soil Minka Kelly for me. I don't do sloppy seconds. Not for Jeter, not for nobody!!

this is ridiculous

anyone who thinks he's overrated simply does not know baseball. he is the best contact hitter i've ever seen and uses the all parts of the field as good as anyone whose ever played.

intelligence, leadership, and intangibles are off the charts. stays out of trouble and always says the right thing among a pack of media wolves constantly begging for a slip up

it's just too bad he's not a member of the Red Sox....that's really the only flaw of his i can think of

In regards to Griffey...i can say i was very close to say he's the best of the past two decades (my generation), but outside of his amazing talent he faded away as well

once he left seattle he never came close to his former self...extremely arrogant on top of that, never really came up in the clutch either
