I think it's terrible that Jim Thorpe's remains are in the town that bears his name. He never stepped foot there. His wife let them have the body if they changed the name of the town from Mauch Chunk to Jim Thorpe. Great little town. My best friend lives there.

I live 30 minutes from Jim Thorpe. Beautiful town and so much to do. It is kinda sad what happened with his body, though at this point do we really dig him back up just to move him or let him RIP?

On to the topic I would vote for Jim Thorpe as well. Imagine he had modern training! He dominated in any sport he played easily without needing to work at it. Plus King Gustav called him the greatest athlete. He won the Pentathlon and Decathlon which are truly amazing athletic feats.

Honestly there's really now way to compare athletes from other sports. A lot of guys now could easily play multiple sports but don't so they can focus on one. This is a debate that will go on forever with no winner. Much easier to compare athletes in their respective sports. I'm actually pretty curious how people think certain athletes would fair in other sports.

Yeah. I really have no idea how to answer this question. I don't know how you weigh skill against raw power and speed against the ability to perform when it matters most.

I tend to approach it somewhat the way Greyhammer does though. I am always really impressed by athletes who seem like they can play any sport at a high level. LeBron, Dave Winfield, Jackie Robinson are all good choices, but Bo Jackson is my favorite. That 30 for 30 on him really stuck with me.

I will put my vote in for ALI.

He not only showed the incredible athletic skill to dominate perhaps the most grueling and challenging sport through two era's. He had likely the most powerful social/political impact of any athlete.

He showed both courage and perseverance of a high order. His dual victories over the two most terrifying boxers of two different epochs nearly 15 years apart, boxers that could not be beaten when he faced them, namely Liston and Big George was an athletic feat difficult to match.

ALI spoke at ND back in the day at the old rock, he was up in the balcony his backdrop was ARA and the entire ND football team behind him. That was during his banishment and there was standing room only from a student body with hardly a person missing. Few athletes, perhaps no athlete, could have generated such excitement and that was YEARS before the rumble in the jungle or the thrilla in manila. Only RFK and his appearance the year before he was shot , came close to matching the excitement of that day.

Our mother and father played their parts but outside "management" was directing. It was a costar marquee for me or nothing. But I digress.

I have been eaten by neither labor nor management.

My lunch is a different matter altogether.

I'm not sure who the best is. But to help keep the list comprehensive, I'd say add Danny Ainge, Hershel Walker, and Nolan Richardson (not a joke-- was signed to play pro basketball, baseball, and football).

You stole my thunder with this one. IMO, in general the greatest athletes play in the NBA. It's evident by the basketball scrubs who can dominate the NFL (TO, Gates, the TE from New Orleans, etc). However what Jordan proved, is that all the athleticism in the world doesn't help you with the coordination needed in baseball. Therefore, I think you need a guy who was good in the NBA and could play baseball at a high level.

Someone said Carl Lewis? LOL, sure he was fast and could jump far, but I'm sure he couldn't catch a cold, or tackle anyone, and he couldn't sing.

We probably need to define terms. Bo was very athletic but he wasn't a top 20 all time RB and he wasn't even in the top 1000 of all time baseball players. He had a career .250 average. EvenThorpe hit .252. You guys just hate old people.
