Oh yeah, I have been saying for a while that I like the idea of bringing Massa as an emergency QB. Heggie I am not so sure about, but if we have the schollie to give I certainly wouldn't be opposed.

I had been assuming that the decision not to bring them back has been made though, and I figured if we had extra schollies they might go to walk-ons like Cavalaris or Little.

Would either Massa or Heggie want to transfer? Or just move on, since neither is likely to play? Not sure but I think those are possibilities.

If we have any spots left, I don't care what guy we give a 5th year to. There is literally zero downside to giving a guy a fifth year if there are remaining slots in the roster.

Totally agree. I think Massa has value as a scout team or "emergency" especially depending on what you want to do with Kizer.

I find it interesting that in 2010 Rivals had Hendrix as the #13 pro style QB, Massa as #28 and Rees as #31.

Just noticed that the last ten days of predictions for Quick are Oklahoma 11, ND 1. Welp.

I'm starting to get worried that we don't get any of the remaining targets. I could easily see:

Alexander - Stanford
Cage - MSU
Quick - OU
JuJu - USC
Garnett - OU

It's so cool that they could all end up going to our opponents as well.

Yeah. And Wolfong's % has dropped about 6 points since I last checked, and he has Quick/Smith/Alexander going to ND. ND might end up owing his accuracy big time, lol.

Out from under? The only reason they are back is because we have those scholarships available. Why not use them, especially for two guys that actually do have defined roles on the team? Massa is the holder on FGs and EPs, and will serve as an emergency backup QB. Heggie is an extra scholarship OL with a lot of time in the S&D program who will help a lot on the practice field.

Would I have loved those 2 scholarships go to very good prospects we wanted this year? Sure. But because that isn't likely to happen, I think it is actually the smart and prudent thing to do to bring both guys back for the one year on scholarship and save the rides for the small '15 class, rather than take reaches in the '14 class and creating a scenario where it actually will take a while to get 'out from under' scholarships.

My comment is more out of frustration that ND has to offer them 5th year. You can't tell me that after a NCG appearance last year that we all didn't think there would be no issues filling the 85 schollies and that ND would be turning kids away at the end of this cycle, not the other way around. Everything you said is true, but it doesn't make offering those two 5th years any less sad.

Given the QB situation it makes sense to have him back back at third string there. Kizer is a bit of a project and won't even have spring ball to help acclimate him. As it stands the Irish are two injuries at the position away from epic disaster. Changing that to being two injuries away from regular disaster has some genuine value, IMO.

EDIT: Kinlaw should be in there somewhere - maybe even ahead of Kizer. If Massa is brought back and that allows Kinlaw to work at his projected future position rather than working at QB then it's another positive effect.

I have been thinking a lot about this.

First, Kizer is no more of a project than any quarterback that has come in for Kelly back to CMU. That is right. Dan LeFever spent his freshman year as a redshirt at CMU. And "project" status or rating aside (I think it is one of the most trite and overused phrases in the fan lexicon) few teams get a guy coming in with as high a athletic ceiling as DeShone Kizer.

What I was thinking about was Kelly "interrupting" his own press conference to delve into detail about his plans for a signal caller. It is unlike BK to release much of any information up front, without being prodded. Brian went to great lengths to talk about depth on his squad at the quarterback position, and he named Malik Zaire, and something like "whoever else we may have coming in." In my opinion, Brian Kelly went out of his way to acknowledge DeShone Kizer, even though it was an especial pain in the NCAAss, with rules for unsigned commits being what they are.

Other than to keep DeShone in the fold if unsubstantiated rumors are true about him bolting to play basketball somewhere, (DeShone plans things methodically), why would Kelly have said that?

Last year I tried to express myself about the quarterback situation and failed miserably. I think that the coaching staff's new mantra is exactly the rub. Kelly went from in '13 not having one quarterback available to him that had the abilities he wanted to see in his starter, to having every one on his depth chart (through three) having those abilities. I think Kelly has, and knows he has three guys that can play outside the pocket, and can extend plays by foot or by air, and has the rest of the offensive tools (line, WR's, TE's, and RB's) he needs to put it to best advantage.

Simply put I believe for whatever reason, Kelly said, I can play and win with my 1, 2, or 3. Obviously, he doesn't want to be in the position to use his three in September, but I believe over the run, he thinks he can win big with any of his guys.

Where have there been any rumors, at all, that Kizer was thinking of tabling his football scholarships and playing bball somewhere?

You do have to consider that we already have 22 commits already with few guys that I would really consider emergency options. Our scholarship issues are more to do with the failure of the 2010 and 2011 classes more than this class being sub-par. If we could take a class of this caliber every year I'd sign up for that.

He must really want to play DIII basketball and pass up a full football scholarship to ND. This talk takes the cake Bogs.

Yeah, it's looking like it might be unpleasant end, but as far as general consensus goes,
it was mostly Alexander favored to sign from that bunch.

In Toledo.*

* But I thought I made it clear that I don't believe them. Bottom line, some D1 BBall coaches have been making overtures, (this is true). DeShone is a polite kid. I would assume he has heard them out. Some, especially the hoards of ND haters in Toledo, including almost all of the media, would go ape-shit over the prospect. Thus, pleasure is the mother of gossipy invention.

** I cite this as only an example of how stupid the whole thing is. It used to be that Toledo was almost a half-Catholic town. And the majority of the Catholics were both Ohio State and ND fans. For forty years it wasn't a problem in Toledo. Well Toledo had an early "sports reporter" by the name of Frank Gilhooley. He was all state in baseball and basketball at Central Catholic, and played guard on the basketball team at ND. I don't know the whole story, but Frank was bent out of shape at the treatment of his former basketball coach at ND, and he turned his back on the school. Years later he became a big Buckeye fan. That kind of public thing brought a lot of the next generation around to the Buckeyes. People still point to that in Toledo as an example for their ND hatred.

He must really want to play DIII basketball and pass up a full football scholarship to ND. This talk takes the cake Bogs.

I don't know, I thought I quashed the veracity of the rumor in my original post. But I will give you back some frosting for your "cake." Apparently, some of the people that are stopping to see him aren't DIII people, they are D1 people. So as I stated, these rumors could be wishful thinking of the ND haters. Which I hear every day. Even gossipmongers know that a DIII scholarship offer isn't enough to make that kind of rumor sound anything but sketchy!

The other day I ran into one of the worst of them. (He once proudly showed me a leprechaun and pot of gold tattooed on one calf, and a block M on the other, after I returned his salutation I asked him if he still cheered on that team that allowed rapists to play out their eligibility. Anyone that wants to come on over to listen/talk to these people, fine, be my guest!

That's a city. Can you be a little most specific?

I was adding detail as we went to my original post. I could give names of specific people but I don't think that would matter. They have connections with the old CL, and various athletic Halls of Fame and Network of athletic organizations in town. The reason I even cited it is I heard it through someone I know in athletics at U of T and BGSU. So I thought that if it was going around town, it may have traveled to SB. It is [HOWEVER] pretty much the consistently same bull shit. These guys seem to have the heartbeat, or maybe the drumbeat covered. It is just that what was started this time came from (the sewer.)

So is Kizer going to take his game to Tiffin, Ohio, maybe Xenia?

Are you talking to me?

I'm talking to anyone that can put this nonsense to rest about Kizer wanting to suddenly play hoops in college and how he's going to stiff Kelly in 4 days. It makes zero sense don't you think?
