Yahoo is saying that the Ellsbury deal also has an option for the 8th year.
I thought the Yankees learned about giving long term deals to guys who will be in their late 30's at the end.

As a Sox fan, I enjoyed Jacoby and am happy for him. Man do I think the Yankees overpaid. I guess teams just haven't learned. He has had injury issues and is dependent on his legs so he might be making a lot of this money while sitting on the DL.

Perhaps they are emboldened by the Alfonso Soriano experiment.

So if 2011 was an average Ellsbury season does he even get half this contract?

Meh he's a hired gun.

Always kinda took him as a mercenary.

Injury prone, loved jacoby but I don't love him a Carl Crawford+ amount

Jackie Bradley jr come on down.

HIRED GUN??

He was a Sox player for nearly a decade, including two WS championships and time in the minors.

Talk about only seeing the smaller picture.

I never thought of Pujols taking the money and running as showing that he was a hired gun, and honestly, it turned out pretty well for the team.

Free Agency allows long-time players a chance to get a better payday, and if their current employer won't give it to them, then they should take the chance.

No different than any other sport or business.

Ellsbury, Smellsbury.

Royals gonna sign Beltran.

CHAMPIONSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHIIIIIIPPPPPPP!!!

I guess you can go home again. I am happy for Carlos, just wish the Cardinals could have gotten him a WS ring.

I'd probably rather have Choo than Ellsbury, if I'm NY. Better on base average, better power, also a lefthanded hitter, also a good fielder, not quite as much speed (though both are 30 or older), and a lot cheaper.

Now, that I agree with, wholeheartedly.

Anyone who is willing to take him off the Reds hands, please?

He was not a Cardinals killer, but he really made that lineup a lot more dangerous with his ability to consistently get on base for them.

I thought Choo would demand more money than Ellsbury or I believe he deserves more. We will see though. They are similar in age but Choo has been more durable, with more power, higher OBP and considerably more BB. Granted Ellsbury steals more but I'd take Choo over Ellsbury given past record.

I am wondering whether the Ellsbury deal has raised Choo's demands as well considering both are Boras clients.

I was speculating based on this

Scott Boras aims for Shin-Soo Choo to top the Jayson Werth deal | HardballTalk

which says Boras was marketing him at $126 mil, but the number of years isn't clear.

He was making about $5 mil, so I figured he might get it up to $15-18 mil on a seven year deal if he can get it, but that's a long deal for a guy who's 31 now. Ellsbury probably help Choo, so figure he can ask for 6 years at $20 mill pretty easily, no?

Btw, they publish a rumor that the Red Sox are looking at Matt Kemp.

I think the Pierznyski deal for the Sox is a very smart one year deal; better all around than Saltalamacchia.

Agreed only comitting for 1 year w a couple of catching prospects in the pipeline. Love the short contracts they're handing out.

Wow! Pierzynski/Napoli platoon is a great deal for the Red Sox. Extra power bat for their lineup plus they can wait a couple of extra years for the young catchers to develop as well.

I am still perplexed by the Beltran signing. I am not sure what their strategy is to be sure.

Not a free agent signing or a big trade news but I thought this was worth bumping.

Roy Halladay is retiring. Sad to hear him leave the game. Great workhorse pitcher that did not get to see the postseason often because he was pitching for the lackluster Jay for a while. Reminds me a lot of Mussina as well.

Three team trade: Trumbo to D-backs, H Santiago and Tyler Skaggs to Angels, and Eaton to White Sox.

Y! SPORTS

My D-backs finally got a big bat but I'm not very pleased with what they gave up. I think they gave up way to early on Eaton and Skaggs. Should've given them at least another season to prove themselves. But I still like Trumbo and Goldschmidt in the middle of the lineup.

Da faq are the Angels doing trading key players for anything other than pitching?? And the one pitcher the did get is basically the mirror of one they just let sign elsewhere... The Halos haven't had a competent GM since Dismey owned the team...

Yeah, not really getting it from an Angels stand point.
